Default Why did Subaru not equip 2.5i's with a rear sway bar?

Dealer has no clue, said something about only WRX models get it because they're "performance" oriented. I don't think that's a valid reason. Certainly, with the rear bar, the 2.5i will be a better-handling car. What do you guys think?

Thanks,

Cost most likely.
Even the WRX has only tiny 15mm I think.

Most likely it is due to cost and that the target audience for the 2.5i would not really notice the rear sway bar, so why include it. I would actually agree that the 08 WRX model is more "performance" oriented than the 2.5i. i.e. the steel rims with hubcaps on the base 2.5i. The 2.5i is marketed as an economy car with AWD. It appeals the "broader audience."
It's easy enough to add the rear bar anyways. This is where an STi varient of the 2.5i would be needed. Performance minded but without the power.

Actually, the 15mm sway bar on the WRX is stiffer than the 19mm bar on the outgoing model.

Keep in mind that a sway bar transfers more vibrations and sounds from the rear wheels. For an average driver it would be better to have a quiter drive than have tighter cornering.

I personally think the better feel and ability to corner would be helped most by a racing seat and harness. Suspension components aside, it's awfully hard to control the car when you're pulling massive g's at 30mph and your seatbelt locks and your seat has no side supports.

Of course, not all of us have spouses who would remotely appreciate the cost let alone the feel of putting on a full harness as a passenger let alone a driver.

Japan and Australia (IIRC) get an "Impreza, tuned by STI" model which is exactly what asesls was talking about needing. It comes with a unique color, different wheels (brakes?), exterior mods, different interior stuff.

Hey guys I have a 07' 2.5I am currently trying to upgrade my suspension but not go overboard as this is just my daily driver. I just picked up a factory Subaru 20mm rear sway bar off a fellow member and I'm waiting for that to come in so I can throw that on. Has anyone swapped out the sway bar bushings with aftermarket ones by chance? If so, did it make a big difference or not? Thanks

Sorry to dig up this old thread but I didn't really feel it was necessary to post a new one for this.. This is the first car I've actually had the ability to do any work on (first one I've owned), so a lot of this is new to me. I've been looking at adding a rear sway bar to my 08 2.5i for some time (I'm tired of the hideous amounts of body roll the car has and from what I've read this mod will fix that to a point). I've been keeping an eye on the FS forum but I haven't seen anyone selling any 08 wrx or sti rear sway bars, plus I don't have any of the mounting hardware (endlinks, etc.) which are even harder to find. I found this: https://www.subarugenuineparts.com/p...oducts_id=1412
It seems like a decent price to me since it includes everything you need but I was looking for a 2nd opinion to make sure I'm not being an idiot noob (again, I've never done stuff like this before so I want to make sure I'm doing it right). So, yay or nay?

08 wrx sways should fit the 2.5i so you have a few choices depending on what size you want. All you have to order is the oem mounting bolts and aftermarket endlinks(usually stronger then stock). The sway should come with the mount bushings and bracket.

I bought an STI sway from a member on here for $60, bought rallitek endlinks for $60 and less than $20 for the the Subaru RSB mounting brackets.

If you can find someone to sell you a used one from their WRX or STI, you'll be in fat city. The Subaru endlinks are like $40 bucks a piece; I got the heavy duty Rallitek ones for $60 for the pair. Car handles SOO much better!

I actually found a wrx rear sway bar from another member that I might be getting. Where did you get the subaru mounting brackets, direct from the dealer? Do you know the part # (for the nuts and bolts too)?

Put the WRX sway bar on mine and it leveled it out quite a bit in the corners.
My other car is a C6 Vette and the body roll in the Sube really bothered me.
I feel the car is much more balanced now

Default 2.5i w/o Rear Sway Bars

The Reason... $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

*
The average run of the mill car buyer does not care. The stock 2.5i handles well. It handles better than the Civic and Corolla (both I think have rear sways). The problem is that most 2.5i owners are envious of the WRX. We know besides the DOHC turbo, our 2.5i shares 90% of the same parts as the WRX. And whether it is the $25k price tag or just not wanting to deal with a turbo, we ended up with the 2.5i. IF I did not drive the WRX and see what a little sway bar and spring upgrade made I would be happy with the 2.5i suspension. It is really a lot like the tilt/telescope steering wheel. It is a nice feature, but in the grand scheme of things, it does not make or break the sale, and when you are dealing with the 2.5i that is already more expensive than the competition, you have to remove cost someplace. Also keep in mind that the Impreza has a lower ground clearance and center of gravity which negates some of the need for the sway bar.

If anything I am shocked that the WRX has a rear sway bar because every WRX owner replaces them once the car rolls off the lot.

Don't neglect the front bar. Due to way Subarus lose so much camber up front when rolling side to side, a larger front swaybar actually increases the car's overall grip.

The majority of the car's weight is on the front axle.. you cannot tame roll with a rear swaybar. Also, because of the AWD, you cannot put power down coming out of a turn if your inside rear wheel is completely unloaded.

Here is my post about putting a very large FSB on my RS years ago:
Quote:

My springs and shocks are stock (okay, well I have GR-2s in the rear ). I have a Cusco 20-22-24 RSB with Perrin Endlinks and front steering rack bushings. With this setup (before the Addco bar) on my sticky STS autocross tires (Hankook RS2), I was lifting a rear wheel around tight corners and sweepers.

When installing the bar, I used the OEM 'straps' and just cut down the new bushings to fit inside. The bushings and straps that come with it are designed for the 95-00 Legacy which uses two bolts, where the Impreza uses a tab that inserts into a slot in the bracket and a single bolt. I decided to cut the bushing because replacing the bushing and strap are cheaper and easier than having the OEM bracket re-welded to the subframe. I have ripped holes in subframes before, using oversized swaybars, and I don't want to go through that again.

I spent the first month on just the stock front endlinks (daily driving on rough roads), and suprisingly, nothing broke. I replaced my front endlinks with the heavy-duty Whitelines and when inspecting the stock ones (with 130k mi and a solid month of abuse under a 25mm swaybar and stock springs) I found no signs of overstressing. Amazing

The bar performed remarkably at my first autocross of the year where I was able to outrun the rest of my class (STS) by a wide margin and all of STX (including our own DrBiggly & Crash477 ) in my mostly stock RS.

This pic is of the car in the last kink before the finish line.. as you can clearly see... all four wheels are on the ground, and the front outside tire is nearly flat against the pavement.

The nose has gotten slightly bouncier highlighting the fact that I'm on worn stock front struts that can't dampen high speeds very well any more. Low speed dampening is needed even less now, since the bar limits the amount of roll to such an extreme degree. The car is easier than ever to drive fast, and feels more composed at any speed in a corner. While I have not adjusted my rear bar since installing it (20mm), I do not feel the need to, either. At higher speeds (~60mph), the car tends to understeer slightly through sweepers under throttle (still much less than stock), but tucks in and turns very nicely with a quick lift. Overall, it's still very neutral for a Subaru.

I got everything through Boxer4Racing.com. I have nothing but marvelous things to say about them and their quick service.
I also had a 25mm Cobb (hollow) FSB and a 22mm Whiteline (solid) RSB on my 08 WRX. Even then, I was wishing I had gone for a softer rear bar, or a stiffer front. Driving around on the street, I lifted a rear wheel often, which resulted in a spinning wheel and a drivetrain jerk once it finally found the ground again.

I was under the impression I didn't have one but while rotating my tires for the first time since I bought the car I noticed I do have a rear sway bar. A small one. It will soon be replaced with a bigger one. Any suggestions on recommended size????
