Question Turbo Questions

I perused the sticky on turbos and found some good info there. One thing i cant figure out is the notation of 16g, 20g, and such. What is this measurement?

I've just learned that the used 2006 STi (only 40k miles) has a Blouch Performance Turbo. I'm trying to figure out which model it is but I'm not sure. ...The guy I bought it from was the 2nd owner and claimed no knowledge on the performance mods.

So I'm really looking for two things
1. what is 16g, 20g? What's that measurement and what does it mean?
2. What's the story on Blouch turbos? I am a complete turbo/sti noob. just curious how Blouch compares to stock.

16G, 18G, 20G are all Mitsubishi turbo model numbers, they aren't measurements.

Garret turbos have their own naming system:

Borg-Warner and Precision Turbo each have their own naming systems as well.

If I remember when I had a Blouch 18G on my 02 WRX, If you look on the turbo compressor housing there should be a small metal plaque that lables exactly what specs the turbo has.

Turbos have different manufacturers. Every manufacturer have their own naming system. If you check out Garret, Mitsubishi, precision, Turbonetics, they all have their own naming system. Stock location Subaru turbos uses the Mitsubishi style turbos. 16g, 18g and 20g are just naming systems for their turbos.
I think 16g is rated 350hp, 18g is rated 400hp and a 20g is rated 440hp.

The way you can tell what is what is by looking at the compressor side. Go to google images and type in Subaru 16g and then Subaru 20g. The 20gs have a bigger compressor side than a 16g. It would be pretty difficult to tell an 18g from a 20g if it has no markings. If the turbo compressor outlet looks straight like a vf39 turbo then its a 16g. If it looks bent then its either 18g or 20g. Blouch is a pretty good turbo company too, they make awesome stuff.

Do this. If the car was pushing more boost without proper tuning it could already have a massive engine failure in the works. You must have proper tuning and maintenance or things will mess up. Not buying this particular car would be a sound idea unless the guy is willing to take it and pay for a full inspection including compression and leakdown testing, oil analysis and doing some data-logs of the tune.

As for Blouch turbos, they are a great after-market manufacturer of Subaru turbos. They make many models so how they perform compared to stock depends on which turbo you buy but as some guys have said, most of them are Mitsubishi based. I would be less worried about what turbo is on the car than how it was used. Finding out how much boost it's pushing, if it's got stable boost control and if the car is running the right timing and A/F ratios to handle the additional boost is much more important.

Essentially, in a Subaru 2.5L, if it's tuned too aggressively and not properly maintained the Ring-Lands in the pistons could go bad and occasionally, even a EJ257 will spin a ring-bearing. Both essentially mean rebuilding or completely replacing the engine so it's no cheap thing.

Good luck

Thanks all. I bought the car about a month and a half ago. Since then i've removed the TurboXS EBCS and reinstalled a factory EBCS and have bought a Cobb APV2. Cobb stage 2 OTS has been applied. Boost measures at about 19lbs but sometimes gets up to 20lbs if i really lay into it.

I am definitely getting a protune soon. Your replies are what i was looking for on turbo info. Now i just have to figure out what i want to do... Keep it and be stuck with Street Modified class in autocross or shell out mroe money and revert to stock so i can go to my desired class of STU for autocross. Yeah I know I can sell the Blouch but.... ugh. I'm a real sucker for power!

You need to:

a. Read the damned sticky threads at the top of this forum BEFORE posting.
b. Stay off the internet as this question is for your tuner NOT anyone else.
c. Learn to start your own thread for your own question and not tag along on someone else's issue.
