Ford quits rally racing, may lose $billion
Ford is dropping out of the World Rally Championship. The company expects to lose nearly 1 billion dollars in Europe this year and it cutting costs everywhere it can. The racing team M-Sport, Ford’s factory team since 1997, will continue to race the Fiesta WRC and hopes to receive support in the form of vehicles and engineering.

The FIA really needs to fix the classes so that they're both open to competition and relatively inexpensive.

They can try. But those with more money will always spend it. Teams with more money will almost always rise to the top. Aside from making it a spec series, a privateer will almost always get destroyed by modern works teams. Nobody wants to enter and not be competitive. Remember for auto manufacturers, this is about selling cars, not fun.
If auto sales drop, and motorsports based sales do not outweigh the cost of running, it is not worth it to be there. How would they lower the costs? That is a very interesting question? Aside form an all out spec series, how do you make it competitive and inexpensive? |

Can't blame them. Europe is a disaster for the industry.

Doesn't surprise me at all, though Loeb retiring already does.
