Willy's jeep. 3 spd with a transfer case - manual everything but had a heater and wipers. Authentic WWII surplus, the headlights were behind the grill.

I was 12 and learned how to drive a stick on my dad's old Ford tractor. He had me out in the fields working with it a few weeks later. By the time I got behind the wheel of a car, it was second nature.

Base rsx
5 speed.

Dealership drove it to the house. Taught myself by reading about it on the Internet. It didn't do much cause I probably stalled the car out over 200 times in that week. I stalled out the car over 20 times just getting it up the drive way. Funny thing is that I never had a single problem when I sold it at 90k for the wrx. Haha I even misshifted from 3rd to 2nd. Car was a beast.

Sort of practiced once or twice with my dad in a parking lot.

But MY actual own car, driven myself for the first time on public streets, I learned on a lightly tuned S13 hatch with a SR20 and ACT 6-Puck Sprung Clutch kit, its all or nothing bitches lol

It was '92, I was 15 and very familiar with standards. On the way home from Field Store Rodeo my step dad pulled over and told me to drive the rest of the way home. I had been asking to learn how to drive a standard for over a year, been driving since I was 12. It was an '88 F-150 short bed. I later beat the living you know what out of that thing and it kept coming back for more, had the 5.0 in it. Sucker crow hopped like popcorn in a hot pan. Fun times, fun times!!

I learned on a 1988 Acura Integra. This was in 1995 when I was 15. My dad tried to teach me one day and I just wasn't getting it. The next day I was sitting around at home and it was like a light came on in my head and I kind of figured it out. Went out and hopped in the car and I could (kind of) drive it.

Since then my manual transmission cars have been...

1994 Mustang GT
2002 S2000
2006 Wrangler
2009 WRX
2000 Wrangler
2002 S2000
2002 Corvette z06
2010 WRX

I definitely prefer manual for most driving, but I will admit it's nice to drive an auto sometimes and just cruise.

Back around Thanksgiving 2004, my Uncle bought a new 2005 Audi TT AWD Turbo 6-speed. He took me for a ride in it, and halfway through he asked if I wanted to drive. I said sure, and proceeded to stall the car 4 times trying to get it moving from a stop.

Once I got it, we got halfway through the trip, and he asked, "Isn't your car a manual?" To which I replied, "Nope, in fact, this is my first time driving a stick."

Second car was a 2001 Impreza 2.5RS. Would have bought that if they didn't want $10,000 for a $5000 car. Third was a 2014 WRX

I was 17 when I first learned standard and it was actually in my current 2005 STi. I've been driving stick for almost 4 years now. I daily drive a standard 2009 Impreza hatchback now and then the STi is my weekend toy.

I learned a few times in POS pickup trucks, but the first time i had ever driven a stick shift outside of a parking lot was taking my subie on a test drive before buying it

Serious question - why do North Americans call them "stick"? I understand it's a stick and all, but it just doesn't make that much sense. Especially when you call Automatics the right thing. Well, what's the opposite of Automatic? Manual.

First one I ever drove was my cousin's friend's VW GTI 337 edition. It had a 6 speed and to this day is the nicest transmission I have ever shifted.

1981 VW Rabbit Diesel, with the 4 speed. Paid $250 for it and glad I didn't pay anymore. But it was something to learn on and not cringe each time I missed a gear...
