I was 13 or 14, my dads buddy gave us the car as a gift when he had to move. So my dad would take me out to the unfinished part of our housing development at night and teach me how to drive.

'72 convertible bug...........I know I'll get some crap but my 16 year old son just got his permit. On the way home, I pulled over and had him make his first shifts in the snow......stalled the first two times, got it the next several and all the way home. I think he's a natural.....STI is a pretty mellow clutch to learn on. Doughnuts 101, next weekend.

Used Mx-5. Learned to drive it on the way home from the dealer who was about 75 miles from home. That was fun.

Not really a car but the mechanics were similar except with a hand actuated throttle, I first learned to drive stick on an 8 speed tractor when I was 10.

The first car that I had ever driven that was a manual was a 1997 Honda Civic Ex lol. It was my first car i purchased myself and all I wanted in a car was a manual. That was when I was 16 and I am 20 now and still haven't owned a automatic yet lol. People always look at me like I am crazy when I tell them I want a manual.

I learned to drive in an old VW Jetta while on a cross country road trip. Basically the guy I was driving with got tired of being the only driver so I got a crash course.

I first learned when I was 16 in my 03 focus svt, boring car but certainly handled like it was on rails. It was a great car for my first manual

First car...Datsun 310GX back in 1986. Look it up and be prepared to be wowed. It was hit even then. Sick ride though. Very comparable to the STI...wheels, seats, motor, etc.

Mine was a 1992 Legacy. It was my Grandmother's car, which she sold to my father, who then sold it to me. That's the car I learned to drive stick on. I've only owned 3 cars in my life.

I learned on like a 1994 Ford Probe GT. I was like 14 years old. I have owned 31 vehicles since than and would say at least half or more were manual. I definitely prefer it most of the time. Now that I am getting a bit older and just want to cruise on family vacations auto is a bit nicer. And since I didn't really have a choice with my new to me Forester XT I went with what I got.

My brother's Dodge D50 pickup. It was 1981, I don't recall what year truck. I was 14 and had my permit in Arkansas! I drove it just enough to be able to drive it! Little did I know that I would be addicted to manuals later in my life.

When I was 16, I got a HELL of a deal on an S-15 GMC pickup. The owner got divorced and she sold the truck at a bargain price. Damned lucky Sunday classified find! I was OK with a manual, but hadn't driven one in traffic much. My strongest memory is driving it home with Dad and being on an entrance ramp to the interstate. I was trying to merge, watching traffic and revving the crap out of that little Isuzu engine. Dad turns to me and says "You gonna shift?" To this day, whenever I rev up the WRX for ****s, I hear him say "You gonna shift?" RIP Dad.

I learned to drive stick on customer's cars in valet parking. That included various VWs, Hondas, BMWs that donated little pieces of their clutch life. Yup, feel free to entrust you cars to your friendly valet.

As for my own first car with a manual, it was an '89 Subaru RX which was a pos but after driving it for a year I never came back to automatic.

Haha, unfortunately no. I remember it being red. I kinda wish it was silver tho. I even recall the ignition being screwed up. We started the truck up with a dime I found in the center console. Talk about ghetto LOL

I grasped the knowledge in a friends E36 and mastered it, per say, in my Honda Civic Now, I have a 2007 STi. It's ALOT different, but I'm slowly adjusting. I had trouble smoothly going into second lol

1978 Datsun 280 zx, yup, ZX it was a 2+2, in Japan, reaching across my body to the left to shift with my right hand, had to let go of the wheel, left humerus was snapped.(cars in Japan are right hand drive...just in case that needed a little clearing up). It was a blast!

Excluding motorcycles (2005? Suzuki GS500F, 1986 Honda Magna VF700), my first manual was a 2007 Jeep Wrangler. I'll tell you, off-roading in a 4x4 helps you learn brake/clutch/gas/parking-brake work REAL fast. Sadly, those skills carry over very little into actual city driving... at least here in Dallas.

My first was a '96 Nissan 200SX. Drove it for all of 5 minutes. Then 6 years later I bought a 6-speed 350Z. I have rode dirt bikes and street bikes since I was 5, so the concept was embedded in my brain. I just had to get used to doing it in a car.
