Default How long to learn how to drive a manual?

How long did it take you all to learn how to drive stick? I'm test driving a car this weekend and it's a stick and I've driven nothing but automatics in the past. My friend offered to teach me tomorrow, but I'm not sure if I'll be confident by the weekend. Would be fun to break something on a car I'm test driving because I'm not experienced with a stick....

week to get where i could drive around more than a parking lot and within 2-3 weeks i wasn't stalling but maybe once a day tops. once you drive a stick, you'll never go back to automatics.

btw-- i was also 15 and this was my first car so i was basically learning to drive too. it will probably take you a lot less time.

I've taught a bunch of people: basics, about 30 minutes; enough to drive around half-decently, a few hours

A few hours and I was out and about. A few weeks and I could stop and start on hill without stalling or using handbrake.

Handbrake. I still can't use that. It just too much for me to do at once. Gas, clutch, handbrake, all at once and in synch, to to mention concentrate on driving the car itself... I end up stalling anytiem I try useing a handbrake on a hill, but I don't really need it now anyways.

I learned the night before picking up my first stick car. I wasnt good but good enough to get around. One trick that helped me(it was an accident), was learning with the parking brake on. Makes it harder, once that was realized the learning was so easy.

I learned on my friends Integra when I was just a youngin. One of my other buddies needed a ride home and that was the only car at the house(and the owner was drunk). I only stalled it maybe once or twice. It was easy.
But I've been riding bikes for ever, so I pretty much knew how a clutch worked.

EDIT: But it kinda depends on the person, how easily you grasp certain things. I once tried to teach an ex-girlfriend how to drive my car.... BAD IDEA. She just couldn't understand the concept of a clutch and gearing.

Learned on my moms Wrangler. Never stalled it again after 2 days of practice. Picked up my RS from the dealer and I'm still trying to learn to drive the RS as smooth as I can the Wrangler or any other car.

My tranny blows, but anyways, you should be able to drive the car by this weekend if you have any idea what you are doing.

My dad had me drive around my college's parking lot for 15 minutes. I then drove back to my apartment. They he left town. I had to learn or not drive. So I learned I then sold that car and didn't drive a stick for 3 years. Picked it back up right away, it is just second nature once you do it for a few weeks.

Manuals are so much funner to drive... Allways use your parents car when learning instead of your own car. Thats how i did it... took about a day of learning

i learned to drive on stick. pracitce in a parking lot until you feel comfortable enough to go out on the road. dont go into town yet...... hit some hilly backroads that are less crowded so you can practice downshifting and have fun doing it. that is the best place to learn.this will make you a better driver. try not to look at the tach so much.

a few hours of driving until i knew all of the basic motions, 1 month to become a confident stick driver and by 2 months i had a driving school under my belt where i learned the heal toe downshift and the finer points of stick shift.

I don't remember learning. I think I was put in a MT truck when I was three and it just went from there.

So, immediately?

I drove a John Deere 4440 at age 10. Anything is easy after that.

I will say, the WRX is a difficult one though. With the uppipe cat in and the A/C on, I would would stall it. Not anymore!!(thanls HKS)

I really learned on cars with a I-6 F-150 2wd. It was cake, the truck clutches are so easy.

Dam I thought I was the only Idjit that did that

Hadn't driven one in forever, and never really was any good at it. It was ride 'em cowboy off the lot. Best decision I ever made, sometimes you have to just go for it

this was me at 24...
had about 500 miles on the car before i was pretty sure i was not going to blow it up.

1 day to learn the basics but i learned on a jeep with about 19 yards of clutch play. Then i went and picked up my WRX and i had to learn all over again.

I learned on my brother's '96 Mustang GT. When I made the first attempt to go, I stalled. And since then, I've only stalled in my Impreza a few times when I wasn't paying attention.

But to learn, I'd say an hour.
To be comfortable, a week.
To master, a year.

That's funny! I bought my RS and couldn't even remember how to drive a stick it had been so long. I had never driven on a regular basis just a few times off road...it was a rough drive home, but I made it!
