New magic number for age is 6 years, I think.
They may last longer, very hard to tell.

No performance winter tire is on par with the WS70 or EWC in the snow or ice. The ratings are biased for the category, among many other things.

You'll see lots of stories here and elsewhere about people plowing through deep snow, way deeper than they have ground clearance for. They're true stories, but with a major caveat: it's only possible with light, dry snow.

I mostly snowboard in the Sierras, and we tend to get what's affectionately known as "Sierra cement." It's dense, wet, and completely impossible to plow throw no matter what tires you're using. Only ground clearance will get you through really wet snow like that if it's deep.

In colder climates, like the Utah mountains, the snow is much drier and you can plow through it even with performance winter tires.

so no1v2 is it all ground clearance or is it all tires with wet snow.

If I am not mistaken high performance winters are comparable to studless winters in snow. They differ on ice, dry and wet.

So now I have two different sets to choose which one I want winter tires on.

Choice #1- 05 WRX Rims (205/55/R16) 40% Continental Extreme Contact DWS.
Choice #2- 06 WRX Rims (215/45/R17) 50% Bridgestone RE92 (currently on the car now).

Which one would be better off having snows on?
Or its better to just get a 3rd set (steelies with snows)?

Located in Rochester, NY.

Usually more sidewall is better for winter.

I'd ditch the RE92's, run the DWS until snow and mount snows on your 16" wheels. Then get new all season/summer tires on your 17"s.
I have 18" wheels for summer and with the roads in Western NY sometimes I wish I had kept 17"s. Granted Rochester is a bit better than where I am, but still..

My plan is to run the 17" till Novemberish and the dws is gonna be my autox wheel (3ish events) and when the dws run out ill put snows on it and mount on the car then get a new 17" wheel next summer.

Yeah, I thought you had to change the brakes.

16" wheels barely fit over mine...

No, you don't have to change the brakes, but yes, you have to have the right wheel (kind of like not all 17s clear the 04-07 STi calipers). I remember a WRX featured in Sport Compact Car (a bugeye) with 15s (don't remember what kind) and personally have seen rally cars with them.

However, I'm not sure about 06-07, when they came with the opposed calipers.

This is also why some STi owners choose to "downgrade" to WRX calipers (the sliding ones, not the opposed-piston ones) , so they can fit 15" wheels (EDIT: see above post, thanks, jonklein611).

Yeah in the jalop article I took that from they mentioned that the STI's used had WRX brakes so they could fit 15" rally wheels.

when i posted 195-65-15, it's because the owner has 2.5i impreza.. so yes, those fit easily on 15x6 steel wheel

i wasn't talking about wrx/sti.... and yes there's some exceptions with proper rally wheels. my old 15x7 team dynamic prorace1 45mm offset easily fit on friends 06wrx with 4pts brakes. kinda of a waste of wheel for winter use only.

It's mostly ground clearance that matters with wet/heavy snow. Even if you had enough traction to plow through that stuff you'd destroy your bumper and maybe underbody in the process.

In my experience studless winters have a lot more grip in snow too. I've used the 3D (performance winter) and EWC (studless winter) on my own cars. The EWC is better on snow and far better on ice. The 3D is better in the rain and dry, though they're surprisingly close in the dry.

My full review is here. I still think the 3D is a good compromise between snow, wet, and dry, and I recommend them to many people. But if you want to tilt the equation more towards snow and ice the EWC is better.

I've been running the Dunlop SP Winter Sports on my Impreza wagon for the last two winters and am going back to old style snow tires this winter. The Dunlops are good in packed down snow but they are slippery in deep snow and slush. Time for me to go back to Mastercraft Glacier Grips, had them on my old Honda and it was unstoppable in the snow.
