Default Tuning UTEC w/ Mac

Hi all, I just bought a UTEC, and here's my question, before we all go into mac's suck etc etc I need to know this....

I am running OS 10 on my mac, which has I believe a built in UNIX terminal, is there a way I can tune my utec using this and a serial connection Hss anyone done such?
Thanks

Keyspan (I believe) USB to serial adapter, and a VT100 terminal emulator. over on www.wrxhackers.com a couple people have done it, a search there should prove usefull.

OSX has a terminal program built in, but I think you still need a shareware/freeware VT100 emulator.

www.versiontracker.com has one listed when I searched for 'VT100', and there are more there, just have to use teh right search words.

Default Do you actually need any other software ?

What can't the terminal do ?

This is very interesting, but is it worth the tweaking ?

I'm a diehard Mac user, but for a special purpose like ECU tuning, I would consider buying a PC laptop personally, unless someone can show me the way on a Mac.

I think the stock OSX terminal program cannot work through a serial port. The third party terminal programs are needed in order to communicate through the USB/serial adapter

I use ZTerm with the KeySpan adapter on my Titanium to do all the tuning of my UTEC. One of the problems with this is that when you download maps out of the UTEC, you don't get the checksums. So it's not possible to upload a map you download out of the UTEC. You can use it quite effectively to log runs and modify map parameters, however.

Head over to VersionTracker and search for ZTerm. You'll find it.

I don't have a MAC in front of me, but check if you have a program called tip. (Only for OS X or higher) Open a terminal and type in

which tip

See if it returns a path like

/usr/bin/tip

tip is a Unix program used to make serial connections. I'm not sure if it will avoid the checsum probelm, but you can in theory do everything else.

edit: My bad. Linux and BSD use minicom instead (I'm too used to Solaris these days)

Ok, I've actually tested it (I know i have no life!). I'm having trouble saving maps to the laptop. It would be so much easier if the UTEC accepted zmodem file transfers.

But this should get you to edit the maps without a problem.

just copy and past the next part into a command prompt, for OS X/Jaguar users that would be the terminal icon.

Code:
 echo "pr port /dev/ttyUSB0
 pu baudrate 19200
 pu bits 8
 pu parity N
 pu stopbits 1
 pu backspace DEL
 " > /etc/minirc.dfl
Then all you have to do it type minicom at the command prompt. (This is all assuming minicom is installed by default, you might have to download it.)

Poof! Up comes the UTEC screen. I just did it with a Keyspan adapter and Red Hat Linux V9 laptop.

To disconnect from the UTEC type

CTRL-A
then hit Q

I'm going to sleep now

mtb_dude, you rock!!

I'm using OS X (10.3) with minicom (installed using Fink) and the Keyspan USB Serial adapter.

I had to change the first line of the config (which needs to be at /sw/etc/minirc.dfl if you're using the Fink installed build) to:
pr port /dev/tty.USA19QW81P1.1

but other then that it worked just fine for me as well.

I don't know if that tty name changes everytime or not (since it does seem a bit odd -- it looks more like a serial number for the Keyspan unit itself.) But do an `ls /dev/` and take a look I guess.

Downloading maps works fine, but I haven't tried an upload yet.

Macs hardware is so superior to PC it's not even funny. It's the OS that used to suck. Now it's simply awesome.

racerwrx,

Yeah that's a little weird how the device is called, but if it works, good for you! I was actually testing that on Red Hat linux and ass-u-me-d it would be the same on Mac OS X.

Glad someone made this post, i've been wondering this question in my head for some time now. I'm a aspiring Mac lover because I use it for my Multimedia program but i'm also a PC user. Hopefully the use of Utec w/ a Mac laptop (os) will become greater in the future to make things easier
