Ok, let's face it, the troll is here throwing a temper tantrum and stomping his feet like a two-year old because you are making him look stupid.

He already mailed his spreadsheets to the EPA while filing his formal complaint about the EPA mpg ratings for the new Impreza, because he is convinced that he has proved that Subaru somehow gamed the EPA testing results, and the CVT does not return the "promised" window sticker highway numbers.

Then all you "fools" come on this thread and post your good mpg's, showing that for many drivers the car (even with a CVT) meets or exceeds the estimated HWY numbers!

Can't you see how this makes the troll feel? Angry, very angry, and confused, very confused...

After all, what if in the process of their investigation, which I am sure the EPA is making priority number one (after getting those impressive spreadsheets cobbled together from Consumer Reports testing information -- only what they actually published, not all their data, mind you), they google "Impreza MPG" and find this thread?

Stop making the troll angry!

The forum provides an Ignore List feature that makes it easy to ignore posts from forum members you find to be consistently unhelpful/ignorant/disagreeable/hostile/irrational/etc.

Simply go to User CP > Edit Ignore List, and then add the offending forum member to your list. I currently have three members on my list.

I do get consistently between 29 and 32 MPG with an Impreza Sport with CVT driving an 82 miles round trip commute. I can do better on days traffic is kind to me (like holidays). I also have a Yakima Fatcat snowboard rack attached to the aero crossbars and an Inno fairing. I drive mostly 35/65% City/Highway.

I do strongly believe (and have experienced) this car can do better than 36 MPH highway if you drive it under or around 65 MPH. The city driving is what really takes a toll with the MPGs.

I do have 13K+ miles on mine and my "break in period" came around 7k miles. I didn't believe in that until I experienced it. I went from getting 25/29 MPGs and being mildly disappointed to my current MPGs and being very happy with the car!

The main factor for me getting this car was the fact that you get a decent AWD system, space to seat 4/5 adults comfortably, "reliability", and decent MPGs. I also like the looks of it (except the look from straight back) and I think it is safe to say it will age gracefully. If I would have to take the decision of buying a car again, I would buy it again. I also have recommended it based on my satisfaction with the car. There are other things that I don't like about the car (Mostly cosmetic and design wise) but the thinks I like outweighs everything else.

If you are not happy with your car and you have not cracked the 10K miles, hang in there, there are brighter days ahead of you. If you have passed the 10K mark and are not getting what you expect, try adjusting your driving technique, google "hypermiling" and see if some of those techniques can help you improve MPGs.

I have no regrets with my car either, Id buy it again. Maybe hatchback though, but everything else the same.

Id even still get the cvt. Besides being boring, i have no complaints.

The fuel economy is a huge plus, sometimes I complain if I dont break 40 mpg on the highway, but 39.4 mpg on awd isnt so bad either i guess... lol

Hypermiling is not required, but driving it about 65-70 mph max is required to get the EPA estimated 36mpg HWY.

Trolls don't know this, it cannot be explained to them, one must move on.

The EPA highway cycle averages 48 MPH. Subaru doesn't script the test procedure, they just follow it.

I would go along with it being "disagreeable" to those who find it bad news, but the other 4 do not apply here - to my posts anyway. Some other peoples' posts yes...

I guess "unhelpful" could apply to those concerned about their resale values.

Actually they "are trusted" to follow it.

The fundamental question remains: Why do all of the other vehicles in the Consumer Reports highway mpg test that test the same as the Impreza CVT in the real world test at 30 mpg on the EPA highway test?

This 13 Imp sport gets double the gas mileage of any of my jeeps so I have no complaints other than I wish the gas cap was on the drivers side. Other than that I am very satisfied with it.

Every car does gas cap placement randomly, maybe.

I think it was to lean toward caution because that way you are not in the road refilling should you run out of gas (why most German cars place it there), but that is probably not the reason, because in Japan the drive on the opposite side of the road...

I like it on that side. It seems most cars are on the drivers side so it makes it easier to find a vacant pump sometimes.

I curiously heard once in CarTalk that car makers prefer to place the gas cap opposite to the muffler tip (assuming there's only one tip).

You're right. But I think Subaru is the outlier here, as almost every other car does have the fuel fill door on the opposite side of the car from the exhaust tip.

Of course, cars with a center exhaust (e.g., Porsche Boxster) or dual-split exhaust (e.g., VW GTI) are exempt from this rule.

Two tanks in a row with over 37mpg calculated. The dash display was at 39.3 and 39.6.
The CVT is doing it job. The warmer weather and must be to the summer blend gas are helping. The gas still has 10% ethanol. Same commute in the winter was yielding 30 to 32mpg.

One of these days I should get the display adjusted, but I haven't had any other issues with the car to justify a stay at the dealership. Odometer 22,000+

How come all the CVT drivers are getting the highest MPG's?

Makes no sense, two standard deviations and all...

I'm happy as well. My driving consists of:
25-30% city
Remainder ifs 55-80+ highway or interstate depending on my mood. Usually if I will have a killer headwind I will take the highway at 58mph to help offset the wind, it only adds 3-4min to my commute, but most of my tank is usually 72-75mph on interstate.

With the summer fuel/warmer temps, I am back up to around 31mpg combined, actual highway/interstate is epa or better.

I dropped to 28 all city, but because I've kept it in M mode and playing with paddles around town. You know, 2800 miles and I'm making sure rings are seating correctly
