Default How does the RS stack up against a TC?

I use to always walk TC's in my old RSX-S even the TRD S-Charged ones. Lately I have been finding TC tailing me and acting like their all that. I did however have a little fun with one at 60mph. I threw it in 3rd and went to redline and the TC couldnt stay with me. Now i'm wondering if the driver was really taking it to the limit. The TC is rated at 160hp and the RS 170. The only benefit that I see the TC having is lower weight.

I walked on a TC a couple times. It had a full bolt on roof rack and I hopped up there like it was automatic. Had some french rolls inside and a shovel for digging.

I got stuck, though. Had to call a fire-man.

The Toyota 2.4L is one of the only other 4-banger engines I liked that had a similar kind of torque and wide band usability as the Subaru 2.5L. I'm a big fan of the tC car, one of the quietest cars stock I've been in outside of maybe a high end Cadillac. Unlike the Subaru NA engine, the 2.4L pulled from their Camry can actually take some boost on stock internals, not a lot but some. I really enjoyed the ride of the tC too, very good in stock form, well controlled, handled rough stuff well. The steering was also one of the nicer feeling ones I've used for a budget level car around this price point. Frankly, if I didn't find my current Forester almost by accident, I'd be driving a tC right now. While I'd still prefer to grab another Subaru before a Scion, the tC is a car I'm a big fan of. My only gripe would be its stock RE92 tires (oh god why), and the sloped rear roof/hatch makes it so rear passengers pretty much can't sit in the seats if they're over 5'6". I haven't sat in one for a few years, so newer models may have slightly improved geometry for rear passengers.

In the end, I wouldn't harp in the tC much. It's a very nice car. I would say the engine is more similar than different to the Subaru engine than most other budget cars out there.

As for the racing thing. MANY people you think you might be racing are in fact not racing you. There are a lot of tools buzzing around where I live, and a lot of people have the mindset that most take-offs from a light are races when in fact the second person isn't doing anything more than normal driving. Not to ruin your parade, but these cars are SLOW and dog poo in terms of accelerating. They can launch from a line fine. Yay for inertia and awd, but the power output is jack. Mine's modded. I race mine in auto-x and rally-x. I'm still telling you for drag use, these cars are way underpowered and too heavy to be a meaningful straight line racing device. There are a TON of better vehicles out there. If you want fast, you at the very least need to step to forced induction. Get the hp up to 500+ with a good sized turbo. You'll need a STI drivetrain or start with a STI first. If you stick with NA, you better pull the engine and build a race engine out of it, because you'll need it to wind way up to make any real power. Next, you'll want to cut weight, a LOT of weight. The car should be gutted completely. You'll want to start cutting unnecessary sheet metal. You'll want to take off all unnecessary parts. You want pretty much nothing left but what's absolutely needed to keep the car together and the rain out. You'll want to address aerodynamics. Then and only then it might be fast.

You know what a fast car is? A fast car is a Viper on full slicks that can break traction in 3rd off half throttle. The most we get is cornering speed. We can get up to speed and try to stay there. That's what we get. This unfortunately isn't something associated with drag racing. If you want to be quick, you hit up auto-x and make the car corner really well. With smart mods and great grip, you'll be able to post raw times similar to stock WRXs and STIs. You want to be fast, you hit up rally-x where power and weight are much smaller parts of what makes a car fast. These cars can get podium finishes in rally-x, even Modified class, with only light mods and driver skill will get you there. For auto-x, more speed is necessary unless you stick to very mildly prepped classes. For drag, these cars aren't worth beans unless you're forced induction or are shooting for set times.

If you want to stick to drag racing, I'll sit on the side lines laughing at you along with the rest of the world. An out of place car in a sport that is dominated by much better cars is like clowns at a circus. Everyone around you is laughing.

black road runner pretty much summed it up. OP, the 1 big thing that you aren't thinking of is drivetrain loss. Take 40% off of your 173hp (that's 69hp if you're wondering), and that is what you are actually putting down to the ground. I hate to burst your bubble, but a stock Corolla won't have much of a problem keeping up with you. If the TC was really racing, the only thing that you would see is his tail lights.

I know...depressing.

Yeah, your car dynos to around 130 or so horsepower because of the AWD. The tC, on the other hand, probably dynos to around 140-145, even though it is just to the front wheels.

22% loss through the drive line and 170 becomes 132.6 add a 4EAT knocks that down to 120

The lowered TCs look like they handle well, never been in one though. Neither are straight-line beasts, so any geek acting like "he's all that", ignore! The TC is pretty small, I wonder what it weighs(I'm searching, don't worry).

AWD == Slow

Not that it matters though as the Scion is also slow as hell. I have been in the car when my friend destroyed a TC that was tailgating him for about 3 miles (IN A SKOOL ZONE WITH NAWZ!!1!) without so much as downshifting. That was in a stock 2002 Mazda Protege .

C/N: Both cars are slow so who cares

Perhaps I was being too vague with the word slow. With the exception of substantially higher echelon cars, 2WD will take the cake for straight line speed. Which in the context of comparison between a base model Subaru and a Scion, is completely irrelevant. Hopefully you aren't swigging too much of the AWD Kool-Aid.

The old Proteges were nice cars, like them better than the Mazda3 that replaced them. My bro had the Protege5, fun car. Mazda knows how to make cars fun to drive, completely stock. The Mazda 3 got worse styling, louder interior, and more plasticy everywhere. The good thing was it got the bigger 2.3L which was welcome. Speaking of engines, the 2.3L is a damn fine engine, geared a little more towards the top end but just good, smooth power. Heck, the smaller 2.0L is darn good to, just a little less oomph. The 2.3L is even pretty competent in the larger and heavier Mazda 6 platform or what most people buy, the Ford Fusion. This isn't quite the same as the Subaru 2.5L in the larger Legacy chassis. The Subaru engine in the larger cars feel a little more like a dog. Oh, and the Mazda engines also take boost completely stock. Both the 2.0L and 2.3L. I wouldn't mind a boosted 2.3L in a Miata.

I hate to dis Subaru, but just because we're owners and like the brand, it doesn't mean the cars are gods in any way. There's a lot of good hardware out there by a variety of brands.

The Protege is a great car indeed. It was the car I learned to drive stick in and with the few mods it had, (Intake, springs, struts, LW flywheel and some other minor things like upgraded motor and tranny mounts) the car to this day performs great. I wish I could get a chance to drive a MSP to see what it would feel like with a bit more oomph.

It's a nice car to learn on. The shifting was quite forgiving. Subarus are some of the harder cars to shift smoothly, mostly because of the high isolation and mush in the drivetrain due to the squishy bushings/mounts. The Protege was a walk in the park compared to a Subaru.

My bro was planning to boost his PR5 until he finally decided to get a FXT. Living in a snow state, there's a certain like towards awd. He also preferred a Subaru, but he picked up the PR5 because it was a super cheap year end deal when they were just starting to step to the Mazda3s. The old Proteges were really refined cars, been around for many years and were Honda Civic good in refinement over the years. It still sounded and felt like a tin can, but it was done good where it needed to be.

A tC tried to race me the other day while I was driving my WRX (highway).

They started tailgating to let me know it was on, then cut left and got right along side me. I could tell by the passenger's full sleeve that these guys were serious business. They rode alongside me for about 90 seconds accelerating a small amount ahead of me and then falling back.

I pointed and laughed. The driver and passenger in the other car were .
