Default Wheel newbie with wheel size and offset questions

I'm looking into possibly getting rid of my BBS wheels and going with a wider wheel (17x8) with an offset that would make the wheel flush with the edge of the fender. Right now, I'm riding on 04 STi BBS wheels with Falken 512's in 235/45/17 and I'm not liking how the wheels/tires are not flush with the edge of the fender. I know if they are too flush, I could get some rubbing but I don't plan on being perfectly flush.

What offset would I need to bring the wheel closer to the edge of the fender while keeping a smooth ride and preventing rubbing?

Is the offset on the BBS wheels +53? And do they stick in (towards the frame) too far for you? Is so you need a bigger + offset, if you want them to move in, use a smaller + offset.

Somebody check that to make sure I'm correct.

Yep, offset on BBS wheels are +53. They stick in too far for me. I thought it might've been the smaller the offset the more it will stick out, but I don't know. Anyone know for sure?

Basically, I'd like to get Volks at some point and since they are not made specifically for our cars, I'll need to get something 'close' to a perfect fit but I also want it to stick out more

Offset is the measurement between the center of the wheel and the hub. A smaller offset would force the wheels in towards the struts/springs and a larger offset would push them out towards the fenders. Assuming I am correct I don't think you will be able to move the wheels out any further.

You are not corrrect:
Center of the wheel moves away from the center of the car as the offset decreases.

There are lots of 17x8 wheels with offsets of 45 - 48. This will move the lip of the wheel ~1/2" farther out.

Isn't that what I stated? If the smaller offset moves the wheel closer to the center of the car, offset being the measurement of the center of the wheel to the hub, how can a smaller offset moving the wheel inward also move the lip of the wheel outward? One wouldn't think such a simple concept would create such confusion.

It is what you stated, sorry I mispoke. It's corrected now.

What offset should I get for wheels that are 17x8 if I want the wheel to come right out (almost) to the edge of the fender well? 45-48mm?
