The 50mm f/1.8 is a great lens, especially for the money.

I need to upgrade my equipment soon; Still working with a D70s, the 18-70 f/3.5-4.5 kit lens and the 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6 VR.

Love to have a D300, but I might settle for a D200 as the budget option and invest in better glass.

1. B+W filter

3. No, I didn't think I would need a remote or timer.
4. Yes, I did apply a slight bit of sharpening in Lightroom, bumped the slider from 25 to 45 and I'm not sure it made much difference.

Can I send you the jpeg or raw files to see how bad it really is?

This question comes up a lot, but my answer is always the same: the entry-level offerings from both Nikon and Canon are very good...you really can't go wrong either way. Try them both out in person and see which one feels the most comfortable in your hands, and which controls make the most sense to you. You want to be comfortable with what you shoot with, and you won't see any real major differences in image quality until you go higher up the range in camera bodies. Starting with the kit lenses is totally fine too, but if you have the extra money, pick up a 50mm ***402;1.8 or even a 35mm ***402;1.8.

Nice sharp photo, and good composition. I'm not sure how I like the desaturated colors in this case. The color saturation is so low that I'd even just go full conversion to black and white at this point.

Yeah, definitely need a different location, but the tripod has definitely helped in getting sharp photos. Your compositions are getting better as well. However, the exposure is still a bit on the dark side for each of them. Make sure you look at your histogram to make sure you're getting proper exposure (this is something that I'll be adding when I revise this thread).

Not bad at all! They're all just a tiny bit underexposed, and the white balance looks to be a bit too much on the cooler side, but each of your compositions is pretty damn good. I think you could've moved the frame a little more to the left on the interior shot (so the steering wheel isn't so close to the edge), but otherwise you've done pretty well.

I didn't start off very different from the equipment you have right now. My first DSLR was a D70 with the same 18-70 kit lens that you own. If you're looking to upgrade, would honestly try to save up a little more and go straight to the D300 while passing over the D200. The D300's high ISO noise is much better than the D200's, as is the overall battery life. My D200 was a total champ (shot with it in the pouring rain at Subiefest 2 and took it to France with me), but the D300 really is far superior technology.

It's been my experience that when using a tripod, even just setting the camera on a 2 sec timer can help make sharper photos, since you completely eliminate the chance of camera shake as you press down the shutter with your finger. Everything else sounds like you shouldn't have any issues though. If you want me to take a look at your JPEG and RAW files, please feel free: [email protected]

Excellent! The D7000 + Nikkor 70-200 ƒ2.8 VR1 combo is mighty one. KP used this exact combo to capture this, so I've got some high expectations from you now:

No pressure

Any decent tripod and head (worth $250+ for the combo) will hold that combo just fine

Thanks!

Yeah, that interior shot was WAY underexposed and I had to bump up the exposure a ton to even get it to that point without adding too much noise. I also made the mistake of only using my 50mm at that point instead of the 18-70. Lesson learned, eh?

Funny about the white balance, as I have it set to "sunny" when shooting and actually tried to warm it even further by setting it to "cloudy" when editing the raw file. As blue as the photos are now, they were even more so originally.

Thanks as well for the advice about the D300. I've heard that the D200 is a big drain on the battery as well (bythom.com and a few others mention that they only got 200-300 shots on a full charge...). Is the D300 any better in regards to that? Right now I can easily shoot double that number without worrying about the battery.

The 50mm works fine for interiors, just gotta be mindful of your composition. I usually use the 50mm when I'm trying to highlight a certain aspect of the interior, rather than trying to capture the entire interior:

And yes, the D200 battery drain kinda sucks, which is why I ended up bringing 6 batteries with me to France, with 2 batteries always in (with my battery grip). The D300 is WAY better...I'd say back to the levels of your D70s.

A little better, but now it's looking a bit muddy. What are you using to edit RAW files? I never depend on the presets...I always set my white balance using the eyedropper tool in Lightroom or Photoshop.

Yeah, I was going for depth of field with the 50mm:

(I had to sit in the back seat and shoot through the headrest to even get this much of the steering wheel...Should have been a sign. )

Thanks again for all of the advice! It's definitely appreciated as I've been following some of you guys for years and I finally have the chance to do some freelance work for an automotive web site, so I'm soaking this all in and trying to improve as much as possible in a short amount of time.

Honestly? Microsoft raw photo editor and GIMP for straightening and some minor work with levels.

I think I'm finally going to purchase Lightroom this year now that I'm shooting on a much more regular basis.

I have a Manfrotto 055XB, 498RC2 Ball Head combo, rated for 18 pounds or so. They seem to work great!

I'm pretty damn excited about the new combo, although I've had the 70-200 for 6 months or so now.

I had owned my camera for 6 months, and the 70-200 for 4 when that shot was taken. Totally fair!
