Default VF34: COMPLETE teardown and re-assembly. PICS!!

Sorry if this is less than impressive to people out there...but I had always wondered what the difference between the ball-bearingVF34 and the other "normal" journal bearing VFs was. I had never heard of or seen anyone take apart a vf34 before.

So, long story short, I gave my P&P housings to a friend, and now I'm doing it again before I put the turbo back on. I got a little curious when taking the housings off....and, well, couldn't help myself.

Now I see why it's "not rebuildable," but its only because there aren't any rebuild kits available with new ball bearings.... although it has also become obvious to me that other VFs (journal bearing VFs: 30, 37, 39, etc.) ARE rebuildable, so people need to stop saying they're not!!

For reference, here's a "how to" rebuild on journal bearing VF turbos:http://www.mx6.com/forums/1g-faq-for...build-how.html

Part I (of III) of assembling the turbo:

...and Part II:

...Finally, Part III:

Anyway, pics:

We say they are not rebuildable because:

1. The rebuild kits weren't available until recently
2. 90% of NASIOC users can't rotate their tires let alone do something 1% as complicated as rebuilding a turbo.....have you SEEN how many threads there are on simply jacking up a Subaru or how to install a catback???????

Where can you get a rebuild kit for VF34? I've never seen a rebuild kit for VF34 before.

You can't, at least not that I'm aware of. Unabomber and I are both referring to rebuild kits for *other* VF turbos.

Though I have to wonder if there's a suitable replacement bearing out there that would work, although not designed specifically for a turbo. That, or perhaps a machine shop could make/modify some new bearings for a 34.

Regardless, I'm not looking for new bearings (yet, lol) as mine seem to be perfectly healthy!

Oic, hadn't ever looked much until recently.

I tend to do two things on NASIOC: research technical things and browse the classifieds. Perhaps that's why I was not aware of this. I hope that's an exaggeration, btw... either way:

Thanks! I had not ever seen ANY of an IHI bb turbo...thus, I tore it open!

I had tried once before to get the compressor housing off...and I think perhaps I was just too much of a panzy. After I took the bolts off the back, a few swift whacks with a 3lb sledge knocked it loose, and I gave it some love taps to finesse it free. (I was careful not to damage the wheel!)

Haha, thanks! Should be done soon... I need to get it balanced this week.

****, I should have already assembled it so I can bring it to the turbo shop tomorrow! doh!

Nope, God's truth There's some stunningly dim people here. They ask about how to remove a stuck bolt on day one and on day two get super pissed when I tell them they need to have a professional rebuild their transmission. People who do advanced stuff like engines, trannys, and turbos do like you......just post their results as they have to ask no questions. Stuff that costs $XXXX to fix when you goof should be trusted to pros or people who don't need help and sadly I get hollered at for that thought process.

Hahaha, I have to agree with your thinking there. I remember when I was one to ask about removing stuck bolts and such...you know, when I was 16, lol. Boy how time flies...

Thanks.
And yessssssir! I meant to scribe the shaft/compressor wheel so I could just line them up on reassembly...but I forgot.

I've been talking to Chris at CRT Technologies in St. Louis about balancing it. I wanted to drop it off Monday and have it back by now...but that didn't work out, lol. I should be dropping it off tomorrow and getting it back early next week. Apparently, they're working on some new custom billet wheels for big Diesel turbos right now, and obviously that gets done before my turbo gets balanced, lol. Anyway, he said $50 for a balance, which isn't too bad IMO, or $100 for inspection, assembly, and balance. I'm opting for the balance only because I wanted to make a video of assembling it myself!

Here's part I of III:

Love the video! Great stuff.
Do you know the torque specs (ft lbs) for the bolts when reassembling the turbo? For instance, the coolant line bolts?
Or at least where I can find them?

I know this thread is super dated but was wondering if the OP had any tips on getting the clips on the turbine shaft on and off, just got new ones and am going to attempt the tear down and reassembly this weekend.

The parts I am referring to are the small clips seen to the right of the compressor wheel in the last picture of the first post of this thread.

Thanks!

Wow, it's been a while... lol. I don't remember all the details, but here are my suggestions.

1. Spread them as little as possible.
2. Be gentle.
3. Be patient.

Start installing the new ones by setting them on there at an angle, then gently spreading it by pushing on both sides, evenly, until it pops into place. It might help to have a little oil on the ring when installing it.

I'd suggest practicing a couple times with the original rings until you get comfortable with it and you're confident you can install the new ones without damaging them. (It's really not that hard, just good to get a feel for it first.)

Thanks @mowgli29, this is still the best resource for RHF5HB turbos on the net, that I can find. I'll be rebulding mine soon. I got a disassembled turbo, bought a rebuild kit, and turbine and compressor wheels.

I appreciate the time you took to put this all together. I'm new to the forum and looking around to see what's here.
