You need to tighten the crank pulley down to 96 ft/lbs

Just installed my Grimmspeed light weight crank pulley a couple days ago, I am very happy with the quality. The pulley is a very nice piece, the workmanship was perfect. I also ordered the special tool for installation. Had to re-tap a few of the holes unfortunately. I used two big breaker bars and had a buddy hold the tool in place. Breaking the bolt loose was not bad at all with a 3ft breaker bar. It was a fairly quick job, very easy. I removed the drivers side radiator fan, coolant reservoir, and the line to the coolant reservoir. Overall the job took about 45 minutes. Makes rev matching smoother, engine revs up a little quicker, and makes stop and go easier. I also took a long trip after installing and it made a noticeable difference in gas mileage even with spirited driving. The pulley looks great under the hood, no regrets.

I just installed this crank pulley, as I was doing a timing belt job anyways and I'd like to say I feel/see no rpm difference what-so-ever! lol

Honestly though, I just feel like it only adds to the look of my engine bay. Not all that bad I guess...ha

My 05 STi manual says ~133 ft lbs, why do you say so much less?

Good catch! I've seen this before and I think that the source of the confusion is that the FSM for the 2.0L turbo motors states a lower torque and the FSM for the 2.5L turbo motors uses the higher torque that you're seeing. I'll do some digging and update the install guide as necessary, but in the mean time, your best bet is to follow the Factory Service Manual! I've always done the same and have had zero problems.

Thanks for the heads up and don't forget to note their recommendation on lubing the bolt. Lubrication plays a large role in the relationship between fastener torque and clamping force.

I realise this is an old thread but i thought I'd try my luck anyway. I've heard a few things about re-flashing your ECU after installing a lightweight crank pulley. Is this true and if so did you do it?

Not true.

If you've got all the tools on hand and are moderately mechanically inclined and don't run into any problems it's an hour or two.

Mind if I take you up on that offer? Just picked up a brand new pulley off eBay and I'm looking forward to getting it slapped in!

I installed my crank pulley a few days ago on my 03 TS and after driving it for a bit I think I feel confident tossing in my two cents.

I definitely recommend getting this, especially if you can snag a deal on it. I was able to find a new one on eBay and was able to get it for $85!

Install was pretty straightforward, grimmspeed has a PDF with instructions. I was able to find a deal on the crank pulley removal tool as well which came in handy. The crank pulley removal tool is QUALITY. I mean its like overkill, it weights more than the pulley does! But It will be a nice tool in case I need it in the future.

I noticed a difference right away. The engine ran like it had a great burden lifted from it! The car felt a lot more responsive and rev'd much quicker. The biggest thing I noticed was that the shifts (4EAT) were quicker and much smoother. Even when I shut the engine off the car didn't vibrate as much.

Looking forward to pairing it with my new swaybar I got in the mail yesterday.

Great review. Adding this to my list of things to do soon! Would this type of thing void or violate any warranty?

If it leads to the failure of a related part or your warrantying dealer is a prick, yes.

Default Which torque to torque

I just read through this whole thing as I am looking at putting one of these on my '09 STI. I am wondering what the verdict is on the torque. The Grimmspeed instructions still say 94 ft lbs. danny_d19 posted a manual clip stating 132.7 ft lbs. Is there a final verdict on this ? I am not looking for more "Just yank on it till it squeaks."

Thanks for the great thread so far.

I've heard that when U get the underdrive crank pulley,it can cause problems for the crankshaft because it throws the crankshaft's balance off, damaging the crankshaft bearings over time.Is this true?

Whether it's true or not is of no consequence here, as we aren't underdriving anything. The diameter of our pulley matches that of the stock pulley - ours just weighs less!

Matt,

Any idea when the installation instructions will be released for the 2015 WRX MT? Waiting to look it over to see if its within the scope of my ability before buying.

Yep! We've let that slip a bit, but I'll make a point to get it done by early next week - hopefully sooner. The installation instructions for the BRZ/FR-S (same pulley) are similar enough that you should get a feel for what's involved if you need something in the mean time!

I just did the install on my 2015 WRX, and I gotta say it works great! The quality of the crank pulley is amazing. After installation I noticed a difference in the revs while accelerating and decelerating. It's a much smoother ride. On the install it took about 20 min. One problem I encountered was removing the crankshaft bolt. As stated it was about 100 ft/lbs to get it loose and a breaker bar and pipe made it fairly easy. However, the bolt wouldn't clear the engine fans, and those had to be removed/pushed to the sides to get the bolt out. This mod is a must have, it really makes the drive more enjoyable.

In regards to your comment. The original crankshaft pulley has a vibration dampener built in to it. The lightweight pulley does not. Everyone here says you don't need it but I am not installing one on my car for this reason . If someone wants to make one with a dampener I'll revisit this at that time

Good to know, that must be a 2015 issue, wasn't a problem on my 2011.

Just installed one of these on my 05 STi. Ordering and delivery was hassle-free as usual through RSD. Part came in flawless condition in a well-foamed box.

Install was a pain, but that was because the crank pulley bolt was freakin impossible to remove. I had ordered the Grimmspeed crank pulley tool as well, which fit fine and was well-made, but I just could not break the damn bolt loose, no matter how hard I yanked on the breaker bars. Eventually I gave up and pulled the tool off, then put it in 5th and set the e-brake. Utilized what little muscle I have and with a healthy spray of verbal lubrication, the bolt finally came loose.

Install time was around an hour, ignoring how long I spent with the stupid bolt, and walking a brief bit to the autoparts store to pick up a short 1/2" 22mm socket, since the long one I had wouldn't fit with the wrench on the bolt due to the Koyorad, and I was too lazy to take the fans off. I would classify myself as a 'super noob' mechanic, so install would probably be much faster for those of you with more talent (literally everyone else who posts here, probably).

After taking it for a test drive I noticed lower engine noise at idle, smoother idle, and my shifts felt smoother with less stutter when accelerating at normal or slower speeds from a dead stop. RPMs seemed to climb faster in the lower gears (1-3). The difference became less noticeable as I moved from 4-6.

Overall I would call this an excellent 'quality of life' upgrade. It's not going to suddenly give you whiplash where there was none, but I can tell already it'll make normal driving between stoplights as well as harder launches much more pleasant.

Money well-spent.

just received and installed my grimmspeed pulley today on my 07 2.5i. first off the packaging from grimmspeed is the best ive ever seen! install took 30 minutes, hardest part being getting the driver side fan to fit back into the bottom holes. to break the bolt loose ive found the easiest way is first put the car in fifth then have someone press the brakes and break the bolt loose with a breaker bar. it looks like a really nice product and you can definitely feel a difference in revs
