2007 AWD and Differential information?
Hi! I just purchased my first Subaru, a 2007 Impreza 2.5i. I am really curious about the AWD system in this car and what differentials this one would have? I'd like to know what the AWD will do as far as power splitting and that kind of thing.
I'm so glad to have found these forums!!

You have a viscous clutch center diff and open diffs front and rear. The transmission has a 50/50 torque split between front and rear.

AFAIK, the car in that video is an automatic, which has an electronically controlled "active" awd system that delivers power differently than the viscous coupled system that we have. From what I remember reading on the subject, the auto system is far superior.

There are two different types of AWD in the automatics. There is the Active-AWD, which isn't a true full-time AWD as there isn't a geared center differential (ie, the front axle always turns at a rate that directly corresponds with the transmission output shaft). Instead there is a clutch-pack that locks up the driveshaft to the transmission's output shaft to send power to the rear axle. Subaru's tuning of this system is far more aggressive than most manufacturers' similar part-time AWD systems. This is the kind found on most automatic Subarus. Then there is the VTD (variable torque distribution) which is basically the STI's DCCD (an electronically controlled center clutch-type diff) without the driver control part. VTD is typically found in any of the models with an H6 engine, the Legacy GT from '05-'09 the WRX from '02-'07 and the '04-'08 Forester XT. |
