from SCC and other people the majority is second gear. People say that the gears strip is because there is to much torqu the tranny casing moves very little when you rev but enough to get the gears to seperate a little causing the gears to strip usually 2nd gear. never happened to me just going of other posts and previous readings.

2nd gear goes because the % change is the greatest and you're accelerating HARD frequently. Sorry for the OT post, Tom.

From the posts I have been reading the MOST boost you should try to get w/o killing your tranny is 5-7. Also with that ACT clucth it prob. is too good of a clutch and doesn't give as much as the stocker does. Anyone like to disagree with me? If I am wrong in my thinking please let me know.

1) ACT (Street disk)
2) 7 (maybe 6) psi 3) 2nd (and maybe 1st, I don't know for sure yet) I put that poor tranny through some seriously hard launches [at 3 psi] during the 2000 Solo2 season. The post season hard driving @ 7psi didn't help either. |

Ouch! So what are you guys typically paying for this repair?
I see the shop manual prescribes about 6 hours just for installation and removal of the tranny. [This message has been edited by kelley nelson (edited April 06, 2001).] |

Another question (please!):
How long did it take after turbo install before the tranny went? (or how many hard launches did you have?) |

1) ACT Street Clutch and Pressure Plate
2) NO Boost - Normally Aspirated 3) 2nd Gear and Main. Basically, after the tranny blew, I had *no* gears. Launching hard never blew any of my gears, it was always the clutch drop from 1st to 2nd at redline that probably caused my problems. Its still neat to feel the car jump on the switch to 2nd gear, but now I know its slowly weakening the gear. And knowing is half the battle. -Dan |

interesting.. i think the ACt is just a bit too harsh on the trannys . after the Dogbox is installed i think i'll be using the ASR clutch and flywheel
if you still have the ACTgo easy on the 1-2 [email protected] |

Kevin...well said. The Clutchmasters Stage III clutch is the way to go. It is honestly the best aftermarket clutch I've ever felt. It feels near identical to the stock clutch, yet holds 370hp in the 2.5RS.

Yeah, I don't understand it. I have experienced quite a few aftermarket clutches, and the Clutchmasters Stage III is the best, by far. No one, to my knowledge, has broken a transmission using one of these. It's nearly always caused by the ACT clutches...yet people still buy the ACT clutches. Weird.

I think you see more transmission breakages from people using ACT clutches primarily because there are simply more people with higher HP cars using ACT.
That skews our numbers a bit, and gives us a perception of ACT = broken tranny, which I don't think is completely true or fair. That's also like saying it's purely torque that's breaking them. We've rebuilt well over 10 transmissions in the last month and a half alone. The vast majority were 2nd gear failures resulting in transmission SHOCK. It's visually easy to tell the difference between a gear that's been twisted off from pure torque and one that's been shattered from shock. Most of the people running pretty decent power on the street could get away with using the stock transmission without problems. You just have to drive it intelligently. For example, make sure it's full engaged in gear before applying full throttle, refrain from speed-shifting, and don't pop the clutch out hard. Of course, if you want to drive it hard, then you'll need a tough tranny to keep up...regardless of the clutch you use. Cheers, Trey Cobb Tuning www.cobbtuning.com |

Before I even got to Trey's post, I was thinking much of the same thing. Maybe I didn't look around hard enough, but ACT was just about the only heavy duty clutch I could find until after April of 2000. When I put the tubro on it seemed like the *only* choice was "Stock or ACT."

1. What Clutch were you running?
ACT 2. How many pounds of Boost? 8# 3. What gear went? Second gear I do Agree with Trey though..... I don't think it is clutch related, I KNOW, at least in my case, it was the loose nut behind the wheel that caused it!! |

I do agree that the ACT is a very ON/OFF clutch. I wish it were easier to ease into.
also, I wonder if it would be possible to replace just 2nd gear with a 'hardened' unit. |
