Default Hudson Subaru - Jersey City, NJ

This might be a rather strange post, as it's both a positive and a negative.

Positive on the service: Excellent and timely. I have an '02 OBS that's starting to show its age. I've had to bring it in quite often in the last couple of years (other than regular maintenance). My car has always been maintained with them. Because of this loyalty I was given a complete head gasket job free of charge, and a recent sensor and wiring array replacement was at cost, no labor charged. Look for Greg in the service department - overall, I'm impressed with them and very pleased with the end result - I want them to know this, in case they're lurking here .

Negative on sales: Why? Well, I was hooked up with a loaner for the time it took to complete the head gasket work. Not a particularly big deal, as this often results in getting people interested in investing in a new car. This was a 2010 Impreza 5-door 2.5 Premium AT with the special edition pkg. with 2,200mi. We had this car for about a week and were quite impressed by it. So I took the bait and, out of curiosity, asked the mechanic about it - he agreed that because my car is in excellent condition (modded with a WRX head unit and steering wheel - both from classifieds here ) and that the car I wanted was a loaner, I could get a pretty good deal - why not?

A day later one of their salesmen calls me back and invites me into the dealership to talk about the car. This man (apparently a long-time salesman there) had the audacity to try to sell me this loaner (which the mechanic had told me was his snow car last winter) as a brand new car - and would not budge, no matter what (~$1,300 less than sticker, and low-balling me on the trade-in). He also went as far as suggesting that the car was actually worth more than the sticker price (because of the $500 pkg, that the sticker claims is worth over a grand and is discounted) so even giving it to me at the sticker price would've been a favor to me

Again: Loaner. 2,200mi. Mechanic's snow car. Also two CarFaxes, but that may not necessarily be a bad thing (I checked the VIN while I had the car, but I've no CarFax account).

I was actually on a schedule w/my work and had to leave - when I walked out he tried to make me leave a deposit "so they could stop lending the car to anyone else" before it went on the lot at the end of the month (April). No thanks.

I called him back - he wasn't there, so I left a voice mail and made my offer of what I was willing to go with (a low one, expecting him to counter and bring it closer to a fair price) and told him to either work with that number or "have a nice day." He called me back offering with a price that was only $200 less than the previous offer. Lots of luck selling cars that way, in this economy...I have a feeling he just didn't want to sell it to me because a) I was providing my own financing - "cash on the barrel" for him, but then he wouldn't get me on the financing, or b) He probably wanted that car for a relative, etc.

SO - Excellent service dept. I couldn't say enough about them, and would continue to take my new Subaru to them, even if I wind up buying it from elsewhere. BUT for Sales? I appreciate their right to try and make some money, but I didn't expect to have my intelligence insulted...

By the way, that particular car is still there. As a matter of fact, they loaned it to me again for 5 days while I had a wiring harness replaced - 3,100mi. now...

I am very happy that you are pleased with our service department. Andrew has been with us for over 10 years and Subaru will from time to time send "problem" cars to us for him to fix.
For many years our delaership was overlooked and poorly managed, but we have since changed everything. If you are still interested in the Outback loaner please ask for me the next time you are in. I will be happy to look at your trade with you and then review the service loaner.

Best regards,
Nick

Andrew is indeed a good one - As I mentioned before, I've taken my car there for almost 10 years now. If he's been there that long, then my loyalty is a testament to his quality.

I was in fact contacted today by your sales department again on the matter of the loaner. Unfortunately, it's not going to work out. One has to expect a certain amount off the MSRP on account of the car having been titled, and also a certain amount on account of the mileage: More than 3K miles at this point - a significant portion of which (one has to assume) admittedly in snow conditions. It is obvious this is not being taken into account, hence my honest - and I think fair - review.

Regards,
L.S.

I am not sure who contacted you, I wish they had not, I wanted to work with you myself. If you have a chance I would like to see the trade first hand and then take it from there. Subaru is offering factory to dealer programs for the month of June, we may be able to get closer with me looking at the trade and passing the additional incentives to you directly,
Best regards,
Nick

mmm...
i think they are a heck of a stealer...

i bought a used toyota years ago when i was there in jersey city,
i payed 6000 dollars,
but later found that on autotrader.com, they posted the same car with 4000 dollars.

once a stealer, always a stealer...
