question about moding my stock intake vs. buying the injen CAI
Well… I have been seriously considering purchasing the Injen CAI for my ‘05 RS when ptuning gets them back in stock. BUT! After some pretty extensive review, it seems the general consensus is.. even though Injen says you can get up to 17-20 HP gains.. The intake is really more of a noise thing than a real performance mod. SO! What I was thinking of doing is… removing the silencer box on top and the factory plastic piping all the way down to the stock air box. Leaving the piece of pipe with the MAF sensor which bolts onto the air box in place. Then going to a machine shop and having them custom make an aluminum pipe like an intake… which goes from the intake manifold blots onto the bolts from the silencer and connects to the pipe with the MAF sensor to the air box. This pipe will also include the little nipples for the vacuum hoses as well. If I gain 1-2 horsepower cool! If not cool! But this should sound like an intake since the silencer is being taken off right?? If you could let me know what you thing of this mod I would be grateful? I just cant see paying like 230+ for the Injen CAI when I could do this for prob under 100 dollars. Plus I have a K&N filter in my air box as well! Thanks in advance andy

Lame! Why would you want to make your car sound like you have an intake when you don't? If you want some gains spend the money on an intake. If you want your car to make cool sounds then buy one of those fake blow off valve sound systems on ebay.

COBB don't make an intake for the 05's!!! I'd go with the Injen.. most, if not all, people have had postive responses after buying it.

Hey! thanks for all the comments.... someone said something about if I dont drop it into the fender wall what's the point.. sorry.. forgot to mention I put a Ver. 8 STI hood and scoop on my RS and the engine bay is prob cooler than the in the fender wall... that scoop moves some massive amounts of air.. anyhow.. i'm most likey going to put a real intake on there! short ram though because of the scoop..

You're crazy if you think your going to get cooler air with a short ram becuse your car now has a hood scoop. Get something that goes down to the fender well. Thats where all the cold air is going to be.

all that scoop is going to do is give you more drag than cooling. if its cooling anything its cooling the intake manifold....not much would get to a short ram intake. put a reverse cowl in place of the scoop so it draws out the hot air instead of ramming cold air in, and put a CAI through the fender wall. you can get a brake vents to replace the fog light covers (if you dont have fog lights already in place) which will blast more cold air to the CAI than a scoop would to a short ram lying right behind your radiator.
i had a short ram in my car and it was horrible, even though i got it for free. no point in even spending the money there. i've had more power gains with the 05 injen intake than anything thus far. |

You obviously have your mind made up on what you're going to do. You aren't really listening to what anyone is trying to tell you, so just go and do whatever it is you want. Good luck, and happy modding.

Hmmm... I guess I either was misunderstood or totally came off wrong. I am totally listening to everything everyone has to say. I am new to the forum but I think this is the coolest thing ever. I would not think to do anything to my car without seeing what others on here think because I 100% respect everyone on here and want to thank all of you for taking the time to respond to my questions... I am def. Greatful! I also do not have my mind made up seriously taking into consideration everything everyone is saying.. I dont wanna come off as a NOB lol and I wouldn't waste your time if I didnt care! Also you kinda told me off... but you didn't answer my question at all. So I'm gonna ask it again since i do care what you have to say. I totally agree that on a conventionally set up 05 2.5 RS the best way to go with the intake is into the fender wall.. we agree and if my car was conventional I wouldnt even ask id just do it. But! My question was..... since I have an STI hood scoop.... If I were to have an highly certified professional build me a custom short ram pipe about 5 inches in length utilizing my stock piece of pipe which has the MAF sensor... and this setup were to have the cone filter siting right inside the bottom of the hood scoop.. just like the intercooler on a wrx... and have that constant rushing cooler outside air.. plus when idling it can be sucking in air from outside too... do you thing that would be fairly sufficient as an intake..?? |

If you make a short ram for your car you better be sure that thing is very secure and won't move around. Your car has a MAF sensor and not a MAP sensor. If the MAF sensor is moving around, then the sensor will not get the correct airflow readings that it needs, and could cause bad things to happen to your motor. Now as for the hoodscoop providing cool air for the intake. Not going to happen. The hoodscoope is designed to direct cool air over an intercooler. With the turbo cars there is a splitter under that scoop that helps direct air over the intercooler, with out that splitter the air just goes in and tumbles around in who knows what direction. So that means you aren't going to be getting any cool air over your intake. Oh, and when idleing that hoodscoop doesn't do crap. There is not hot air escaping from that thing at a stand still. So with that said the fender well is the best place for cold air. |
