Default recommended shop

Hey, I'm in Greenville, SC and I am wondering if anybody has any experience and would recommend a good shop to do a clutch job. It's actually a 6mt install on my 02, but I was told it shouldn't cost more than a clutch job. I was planning on doing it myself, but the guy I'm getting the tranny said that it is a very difficult job to do on the ground (i.e. without a lift).

I've had some work done in the past by Japanese Auto Specialists and thought they were decent, but wonder if there is somebody out there that is more subaru specific.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

In the local upstate area? there's no one I can think of that I would trust with a Subaru other than to *cringe* mention Fairway.

Hey Danny, I would think you should be able to do it without a lift. You would need a floor jack to get the trans into position, but we've taken out/re-installed transmissions in my Subaru's plenty of times in the driveway. The biggest thing I would worry about would be having all the parts and tools you will need. We're actually doing my full drivetrain swap in my driveway right now, lol. Before you do anything I'd talk to Will (WJM), he may be willing to come down and do it somewhere local, or if nothing else you could take it up to the dealership where he works. Good luck with the swap.

Drew, it's good to hear from you again, (you came up to greer and let me drive your wagon a year or so ago).
I think I have most of the tools, and will buy what I don't. I too think it can be done in the garage and my plan is to do a full 6mt install as soon as I can get the guy in gear that I am supposedly getting it from.
Can you tell me more about WJM?
Thanks!

Haha.

Danny, yeah, I remember letting you drive the wagon. Will is a Subaru mechanic, he has worked at various dealerships, as well as at TopSpeed, the shopped that tuned the wagon in Atlanta. He's up near Mt. Airy, NC now, but comes down to Atlanta and the area every once in a while. He helped me out a lot when I first got my current car with diagnosing some things that were going on. He stopped by on his way back from Atlanta and did some quick work in the driveway. He has a great reputation on here, is very knowledgeable, and does good work. I just thought he would be a good person to ask about doing the work for you, and if not that, he could give you plenty of advice on doing the work yourself. So what's the new car now? I saw you had the swapped coupe for a while, and then the Sunny, ever build that Mini with the Honda engine?

Just as a heads up, if you decide to tackle the job yourself(in the driveway, etc), the 6 speed tranny is one heavy joker. Literally like 3X heavier than the 5 speed. Most Subaru dealerships charge around 6 hours, so it should be around $500-600 for labor. Aftermarket shops should charge around $300-400(give or take).

Bumping this thread.

Its been a few years since this thread started and Maybe some shops have emerged. I am new to the area so this topic could help out a lot.

EDIT:

Looking for shops local to greenville that I can trust with my car. Whether its just mounting and balancing tires, to brakes and exhaust, to power-train repair and performance.

For tires, I am loyal to a place in Easley called Gwinn's Tire. Everything else, aside from machine shop work, or involved body shop work, I do myself.

If you want someone to work on it and know what they're doing, my above comment sadly still stands AFAIK, unless you want to travel to Asheville or Charlotte.

Wow that's sad.

I searched up some shops in Greenville area yesterday looking at google maps and reading reviews. There's this place called first class HALT in Greenville that has lots of good reviews (30+ excellent reviews). Im going to try them out tomorrow for mounting and balancing my new tires. Ill report back on them.

I am like you though 340Duster. I do all my own work when I can. These days I've been pressed for time and having a place to do a brake job or diagnostic when I don't have the time would be really nice... a place I can trust.

If it's something that's basic maintenance like that, and not a performance/ Subaru specific thing, then I can probably come up with a few shops around. What part of Greenville/ the Upstate are you in?

They did a clutch/ trans job for me while I was deployed. And I agree. I mentioned Asheville just not a shop by name since it's not really in the local area.

I've had work done at Vic bailey Subaru and those guys have been very nice and always treated me right. Way better then fairway it's in downtown Spartanburg so it's prolly 30 mins from you. Shop fee is 90/hr I believe so your looking at 270 for labor and whatever the clutch is not unless you buy your own clutch

I wouldn't trust the Top Dead Center guys with my kid's bicycle from some of the things I've heard, but who knows.

Bill at Japanese Auto Specialists off Woodruff is very competent, honest, and reasonable.

any other shops in the Carolina's/Georgia anyone willing to recommend for clutch? I'd prefer someone who is known on this board to be safe. I checked my dealer and they wanted $1100 just for the LABOR on my 08 WRX. Insane. Otherwise a good dealer in Charleston but jeez guys $1100?
