If it doesn't do that with your iPhone 4s or other bluetooth than I think it might be related to iphone 5 bluetooth connection.

So is anyone aware of a firmware update to the HU to improve Bluetooth compatibility?

Bring it to the dealership see if they'll take care of it. There's no way to update the firmware on these thing without swapping the SD card. So they may do it as part of warranty for you.

My question is about my sub.

I have a 8in kicker (cant remember model) good for 150 rms and 300 peak and a

Alpine amp ( http://www.crutchfield.com/p_500MRPF....html?tp=35782 )

sub is bridged on ch3-4

The problem is bass output. Songs that should have a lot of bass dont. For example, I can play a lot of different rap or techno songs and there will be next to no bass from the sub. Then I can play Micheal Jackson's Dirty Dianna and holy cow my whole car rumbles (a lot of black eyed peas also sound good). I though it could be the quality of the track but its not. I tested a few songs both on disk and iphone (Disturbed/Maroon 5) and they are the same. I also spent a good amount of time messing with the HP/LP filters and gains but still no clue as to why my sub is doing this. What the heck is the deal?

ps dont hate me cause I listen to cool music haha

Do you have a Digital Sound processor? If you don't the stock HU has crappy DSP make sure you put it in FLAT mode for a bit more consistent signal.

Thanks for the reply!

I do not have a processor. I am using the crappy stock HU. I was thinking it was the HU but wondered why the HP/LP filter on my amp wasnt fixing/helping.

Also I was doing the "push in on the sides" test to see if the sub was blow. And Im pretty sure it is. Some sides were good (no noise) and others had a slight rubbing noise so that is probably another issue.

Which speakers did you tap for the sub amp?

Recent Subaru OEM HUs (including the one in your 2011 WRX) attenuate bass frequencies sent to the rear channels as you raise the volume, making the fronts a better choice for a subwoofer.

However, if you use the hidden menus to disable the default EQ, you can use the rear channels for a sub. See this thread:
Hidden menu for 2011+ "premium" head unit?

I have them wired to the front speakers but thank you for the info. I will keep it in mind.

So today randomly I decided to unbridge the wiring to see what only 50 watts would sound like. I was expecting that it would be really sh&$y..... OMG, its like i got a brand new setup. WTF is going on lol.... Almost all musics types now have proper bass. Its amazing. So problem solved. Why that worked idk because my sub was rated 150rms 300 peak... weird!

Hi all,

My google-fu has failed me and I didn't want to create a new thread for just one question.
I noticed everyone was saying the 2008+ Impreza non-navi headunit had a terrible output/sound processor and that an aftermarket one would be the first thing on the shopping list.
However, I have the OEM Navigation headunit and I couldn't find much information regarding the output/sound processor on it.
Would an after-market sound processor be the first thing on my list for improved sound quality?
Currently running the stock OEM door speakers for those who are wondering.

Cheers

Which Nav unit do you have? There are 2 different ones. 08-11 has the Kenwood DVD based Nav, and 12+ has Fujitsu Ten Nav. I just recently replace the standard OEM HU in my 13 WRX with a Fujitsu Ten unit and there was major sound improvement. However I do notice it still not very good. I also just replace my front speakers with a pair of Infinity Kappa 63.9i and that did give me a bit more bass but still has weird distorted bass with some song. a Digital Sound Processor will definitely improve your sound. I'm planning to put a JBL MS-A1004 in my car in a couple months. It's an amplifier with built in DSP.

I have the 08-11 Kenwood based one, I think at this point though the best I can do for my sound is to get new speakers/subwoofer

An amplifer + subwoofer or powered sub would be a good idea. Or get a pair of component for the front, a pair of 2 ways on the rear and an amplifer.

Is it hard to DIY a pair of components for the front + 2-ways on the back?

Also, how would I run the amp from the head unit? Do I just add a splice between the wires that feed to the speakers and attach the amp there and power from 12v accessory somewhere?

Thanks for your help so far

It depends. If your car has factory tweeters than it wont' be too bad. otherwise You'll have to find a way to mount those tweeters. And you can buy the 20pin combined harness from SVXDc to wire an amp without having to splice your factory harness.

There's clearly some kind of EQ being applied to the 2012+ Navigation head units.. Has anyone found where to turn all that crap off? There's a bump in the 100-200hz range that's making the subs unusable because of the "boom"

They have an adjustable 7 bands EQ. You can turn it to flat (off). The problem is the sound processor. It just not sending out the correct signal frequency so that's why you're getting the weird boom in some range. Best thing to do is get a dedicated DSP, aftermarket HU with true Flat EQ, or an amplifier with built in DSP (only one I know of is JBL-MS-A1004).

A few things though:

How can you be sure that "flat" is truly flat? It's been shown that the non-nav radios have loudness and a vehicle (sedan/hatch) specific EQ applied when their 3 tone controls are "flat" Why would the NAV be any different? It's also quite obvious in listening to tones at various volumes that there is a "loudness" applied to some frequencies.

A sound-altering EQ (like a cleansweep or similar) is my LAST resort, but the idea in this build was to keep it SIMPLE. Adding that plus another amp, while keeping all that completely hidden is going to be a royal PITA, and unfortunately, changing the HU is absolutely NOT an option.

My point is - the Non-NAV guys can defeat the loudness setting and the factory EQ in a menu - why can't we?

It's as flat as that HU can get lol. There is a hidden menu for this head unit can be access by pressing the "Audio", "Voice" and "Map" at the same time. However there is not a single option for loudness nor any sort of eq option. I'm pretty sure it's just the crappy sound processor that unit has. Honestly there isn't much you can do without adding a DSP. Amplifier might have but it might still give you weird bass frequencies as well. But then I'm not a professional at this so someone else might be able to chime in.

Well you do have another option. Pay a subscription fee on Subaru Techical website so you'll have access to the Service manual for the new Fujitsu Ten Navigation HU and read through it to see if they have anything about any other hidden menu.

Me personally I will be adding a JBL MS-A1004 amplifer which has pretty good built in DSP. Average size amplifers should be easily hiddent under your seats or trunk. Honestly it's hard to expect "good" audio quality from factory. You'll have to add something to enhance them. Good luck whichever way you decide to go.

Default Outback 2011 + OEM sub (H630SAJ000) + AVH-X3500BHS

Hi,

I just received my H630SAJ000 and after looking a lot of forum thread (including SVXdc about subs pin-out) I just can't find any info about this 2010+ OEM sub which has 5 wires, not 6.

I thought I had to connect my RCA L/R sub outputs, ground and constant 12v but that's 6 wires and the sub harness only has 5 wires...

So, the best info I found is SVXdc post about the 6 wires subs but mine has 5 wires connected. Here's the pin-out:
3 ### 2 1
8 7 6 5 4

1 NC
2 Orange/blue (connected to 24-pin)
3 NC
4 NC
5 white/blue (connected to 24-pin)
6 green (connected to 24-pin)
7 red (constant 12v) with a fuse (connected to 20-pin)
8 gray (ground) (connected to 20-pin)

I've noticed that 6 wires comes from the t-hanesses (2 from 20-pin and 4 from 24-pin) but only 5 cables are connected in the sub harness part.

Any help about if I'll be able to connect my AVH-X3500BHS with this sub will be greatly appreciated, since I'm really stucked. Feel free to ask if you need more info, photos...

Thanks

From a totaled 2008 Forester I picked up a C123 HU for my 2005 Forester. I got the AUX pod and I removed the interconnect harness for the AUX pod so I didn't have to order one. I had to cut three wires to get the inter connect harness out of the 2008. Two of the wires were coming off the connector at the HU. I'm thinking those were for the sub-woofer based on diagrams in this thread. They are pins 4 and 8 on the connector into the HU.

The other wire I cut came off the AUX pod and going into the 2008 harness.

I put the HU in my 05 and it works but the AUX pod doesn't. When I press the CD button all I get is the CD function. I'm thinking the wire that I cut coming off the AUX pod might need to go to chassis ground to complete the enable circuit. Wondering if anyone has the AUX pod pin out diagram to confirm? Post #324 in the following thread seems to confirm I need to connect a lead to chassis ground.

This isn't a Jensen head unit, it's Fujitsu Ten.. Parent Company of Eclipse.

Anyway, the hunt continues. Your assumption that all OEM head units suck is probably well-rooted in Subaru history (The HU on our '05 Baja wasn't good), but I just can't imagine that it applies anymore across the board.

I have the same Fujitsu Ten HU It does suck compare to the aftermarket options. Your assumption I have some weird Jensen head unit haha jk. But yeah unless you can crack the firmware for those FT HU good luck finding anything related to making them sound better without external hardwares.

Correct -- pins 4 and 8 are the amplified (speaker level) subwoofer output. The 3rd wire you cut needs to be connected to chassis ground. The aux pod has a switch that will connect that to the HU's aux enable (pin 6), which will then let you select the aux input.

For anyone else installing a C-123 (or C-124) without the factory aux jack, you can simply ground the HU's pin 6 to permanently enable aux.

Question SVXdc please let me know if this is possible.

I need to know if the 2008 Tribeca Limited can be upgraded to have OEM navigation? I do not have navigation, but I was told that I can swap the screens and add the DVD ROM and the Navigation radio panel, GPS antenna. I am not sure if these parts need to be reprogrammed to the vehicle.

Most of Subaru's OEM rectangular-shaped under-seat subs in the last ~10 years tap the HU's front speaker outputs.

However, the 2010-2011 Legacy/Outback HU models PE645U1 and PE605U6 have a line-level sub output on pins on the 24-pin aux socket.

The H630SAJ000 subs for those Legacy/Outback models use that sub out instead of tapping speaker outputs.

At the 8-pin subwoofer plug, power and ground are on the same pins as with the Impreza, Forester, and older Legacy/Outback subs -- pin 7 = +12 Battery/constant, pin 8 = Ground.

Pin 6 is amp remote turn-on. That has actually been present on the older subs, but never used (since they activate by detecting sound on one of their audio inputs). The H630SAJ000's T-harness connects this to pin 23 on the HU's aux socket.

Pin 2 is the line-level audio +, and pin 5 is the audio ground/shield. The H630SAJ000's T-harness connects these to pins 12 (signal) and 11 and 24 (ground/shield) on the HU's aux socket.

The T-harness passes through many of the other pins on the 24-pin socket. Only 4 pins are used for the aux input (7, 8, 9, 19). I'm not sure why the harness passes through the other pins -- perhaps the HU has some undocumented signals on other pins. The PC board inside the PE605U6 or PE645U1 might give some clues.

For anyone whose Legacy/Outback has that OEM sub and wants to switch to an aftermarket HU, I can make an aux adapter with an extra RCA plug and amp turn-on lead to connect the sub to the new HU's line-level subwoofer output.

If you don't already have that sub, I recommend going with an aftermarket sub instead.
