No he is not using WRX cam gears(WRX has 4 cam pullies, EG has 2).

He machined part of the EJ's trigger wheel off of the crank belt drive to press fit onto the EG's crank belt drive.

Crank tigger pics upload fail

I'll have to upload them to photobucket or something and try again.

Its the little wheel that looks like a gear that sits behind the crank pulley. You cant see it unless u pull the pulley.

Has anyone managed to keep the AC and have the hood close? In the land of changing temperatures, AC is required for proper fog removal.

im interested in pictures of the wrx trigger wheel setup. definitely intriguing.

does anyone in H6 land (specifically eg33) have the pin out for the SSM? where all the pins go (which pins on the ssm to what pins on the ecu). need to do some diagnosing, but for some odd reason deleted the SSM in the wiring process.

Im attempting that at the moment. It looks look it will work with the addition of some hood pins. And custom ac lines.

I am looking to do the H6 swap into my 05 Legacy this coming year. With the help of my brother's pipe fabrication, I can create a custom turbo manifold to run a precision PTE 6265. We are also looking into fabricating an intake manifold as well. Once I finally have everything in place, I'll start a new build thread to show the motor build and the swap. I've been skimming through a few pages of this thread and I still have a few questions before I get started with this swap.

1. Is the EZ30 a PITA to tune? Or should I go with the EG33?
2. As far as the radiator goes, would I be able to get away with a Mishimoto radiator with single fan, or should I be looking into a dual fan assembly?

I know there will be plenty of questions that will come up, but are there any major complications between the 2 engines?

eg33 is a royal pain in the ass to tune. you either have to use ecutune and burn chips, or use a standalone. i have no clue about the ez30 though.

i run the stock 2006 rad and fan and it is plenty of cooling for the eg33, so either option you are looking at should be fine.

I've done a bit of searching, and can't really seem to find the answer. Has anyone fitted the EZ30D intake manifold to the 30R and played around with the IRIS valve? I have a 30R, and I plan on making it a slow build project.

Maybe having a legacy, I will get more or less clearance between all the pullies as well. (I see some impreza body owners seem to have fitment issues.

Maybe element can tune one of the two for me. I don't know which tuning route I want to go down and that's going to play a key role into the decision on which H6 to go with.

Also, as far as build parts go, where is the absolute best place to go for forged components and all of the valve-train? Is there anywhere that I can find a forged or billet crankshaft or am I looking into having it custom?

Thanks in advance.

its all custom. cp makes custom pistons, i was qouted 1300 for pistons, pins, retainers, pin fit, and rings. then you can use any aftermarket sti rods. and the stock crank will take an absolute **** kicking.

as far as the eg33 goes, CP makes custom pistons -

I figured Cosworth, Wiseco, or CP would make them. I also figured it'd be an arm and a leg as well so that's already been taken into consideration. As far as the stock crank, I don't think the stock crank is going to like 600+whp. I'm assuming the journals for the bearings are the same size as H4s if I am able to use the STi rods. Right or wrong?

I'll do some searching for someone who can supply valvetrain.

The stock crank will laugh at 600whp. It's forged steel right from scooby-doo. There are a few fellas around making 1000+whp on a welded and offset ground crank. An unmolested stock crank should be even stronger. If your at all concerned have it plasma Ion nitrided (salt bath quench will require post treat grinding, Plasma Ion does not) and then stress releved via cryo treating.
If your talking EZ30, Ive heard it almost as strong as the EG. Whereas the Ez36 has little overlap between journals and main webs and has been know to fail.

Very detailed response. Thank you for that!

I'm still torn between which H6 to go through with. I want to get one that will fit best, be easiest, and the one that will allow me to lay off of the stress meds. As far as the build goes, this useful information can really help when I finally get around to it. And the journals? Standard 52mm? I wouldn't have thought so.

the eg33 is just an ej22 with 2 extra cylinders added to the front. so it is considerably longer, the crank pulley will sit where the rad does. when i did my swap i had to move the rad about 2 inches forward.

the ez30 was an all new design, they designed it to take up roughly the same space as an ej 4 cylinder. it uses a timing chain instead of a belt. early ez30 had 1 exhaust port per head, and there is a swap header available for it. this is probably the easiest of the H6 swaps. the ez30r has 3 exhaust ports per head, and is just as easy to swap in as the early ez30, the wiring is where it gets difficult because of the immobilizer. you either gotta go full standalone, or be really creative with the factory wiring.

That's a good summary.

I think folks have done more to make big power with the EG33s - I'm sure to some extent that's because they've been around longer. And as 2006eg33 said, they're basically a bigger EJ22, so bulletproof rotating assembly parts are plentiful.

From the ease of fitment standpoint, one of the EZ30s would be the way to go. The '05 Legacy (in the Outback guise) was available with an EZ30R, so that will fit right into the car. Using the '01-04 EZ30 will make the wiring easier, as you can use the factory ECU that came with that engine. The '05+ EZ30R, which has AVCS and AVLS, plastic intake manifold, drive-by-wire throttle, and makes more power, will require some more work. Your '05 Legacy may (probably?) already have the immobilizer, so maybe it wouldn't be as hard to make the factory EZ30R ECU work in your car.

In the past I tried putting the EZ30D intake manifold onto the EZ30R and there was some interference, so the intake wouldn't sit flat on the heads. I don't remember what the interference was - this was probably 5 or 6 years ago. If I ever get my EZ30R heads back from Delta Cam I could recreate the fitment test, but I don't know when that will happen.

I may go with the EZ33 based on this information. I will find a way to make it fit properly. I'm sure someone will be up for stabbing the task of tuning it. If the rotating assembly in the EZ33 is as good as you guys say, naturally I'm going to go that route as I am ready to make some power with it.'

For the EZ30 engines you can get Supertech low compression forged pistons (fit both EZ30D and EZ30R) and also valve train parts are available. Just make sure you get the right ones for your engine as EZ30D and EZ30R valve train parts are not interchangeable (unless you really, really know what you are doing also regarding cams, cam journal and base circle size).

Anyone have the '01-04 EZ30 FSM? I have a little bit of it that I downloaded 5 years ago (I'm not really sure why I would have done so back then), but it would be nice to have all of it. Obviously I can sign up for the Subaru Techinfo site, but I figured I would check here first.
