Default Anyone try the BFM cable?

Has anyone tried this cable for logging and flashing? More specifically on a 2002 WRX? I searched but nothing came up.

You should buy one and be the test dummy

The bigger issue for me is I need to get a Windows laptop or netbook (just bought a house, which took some funds away). When I get that in order I would be glad to.

Well I just bought one. Hopefully it'll work on my 06 WRX like they say it will. I really don't want to spend 100+ dollars for just a cable.

looks like an ebay vag com cable. what i notice about my ebay cable is the connection to the odbII has weakened after a few weeks of use and now i get intermittent loss of connection to the laptop. i have to wiggle the plug around a lot.

That's to be expected to a certain degree. Even some of the Cobb APs had that issue.

Lightbulb Might just just be a rebranded vag cable..

I was wondering about them too. Id be shocked if it works for the 02-03 guys. May just be the same thing as the cheaper ebay/vag cables that work if you add 12 volts to the obdII plug on the 04+ Ecu's. It would be great to see Tactrix loose the monopoly and have to be competitive. Someone test it on the bugeye..

Tactrix never had the monopoly. Hell they even have posted the schematics on how to make the cable on the Openecu forums.

Then why do I have to use ECUFlash 1.29?

I'm about 90% sure that those are just VAG-COM cables with a sticker on them...

Digitally signed drivers I believe when V1.30 came out.

like they said looks like the Vag cable, or very similar to the cobb protuner cable... which i dont use because of crap connectiona nd dropping connection during runs ect.

This cable is better than the ebay ones because it wont' give you the voltage too low error you get with vag com cables.

I wish I could confirm this for myself but I haven't gotten it yet. I emailed them Wednesday and they said they usually ship within 2 days and that he's sending a second one via priority mail. I haven't gotten any package info though so I'm giving them until next Wednesday. If I don't have it by then I'm just going to ask for a refund. It shouldn't take that long just to get a cable.

I emailed Cody at BFM and he responded with:

Our cable works just like the tacrix 1.3, although it uses a generic driver system compared to the ECUflash driver pack specific to tactrix. Our cable will log, flash, pull maps, and read learning views with no problems.

This cable is in the same case/frame as any other OBD2-usb cable including the vag cable. What makes it different is the way we wire the chip inside, common issues with vag cables is having to run 12v wires all over the place to activate the cable. With ours as long as your cigar fuse is ok, its a plug and go just like the V1.3 cable.

Default No cable

Well I still don't have the cable and the tracking number I have for it shows no movement or location. Just "Electronic information received" since the 21st. I told them that unless the cable is in transit right now that I want my money back and that I'm giving them a week to resolve it. Now I have to order a tactrix cable and have it overnighted becuase I needed this stupid cable this month. Unbelievable.

Default Got mine!

I ordered this on Wednesday and got it yesterday. Cable seems like it's very good quality, so far I was able to use the "clear ECU" function in RomRaider and it did clear my CEL.

Still trying to get it to work with EcuFlash though... will work on it more tomorrow.

I've been talking to Cody from BFM about this issue, GREAT guy to deal with.

He's told me he tested this cable on every ECU that they've advertised it to work with, INCLUDING the '02-'03 WRX USDM. He said he, too, had a lot of trouble at first to get it working, but stated it is all about timing.

He even said he got it working with version 1.42.2595 of Ecuflash. He seems like a genuine guy, so I'm going to keep trying.

I tested these with every model except the 2000+ JDM but i did have some testers try them and confirm for me overseas. With the 2002/2003 it was a pain at first because i was going at it like an 04 or 05 which aren't very particular about timing. I tried everything i could think of and finally i found the trick but the best way to describe the "right" moment to confirm is making sure you don't hear the cooling fans cycle. Some people will get it first try some have to try it a few times before you catch the feel for when to confirm, i gave out a few cables to 02/03 guys to mix up my test batch.

The main thing is ECUFlash on that confirm prompt, key and BAM nail the "ok" and let it sync up. I tested the cables with ECUflash, Romraider, and Learningview the ecuflash was ver 1.4xx something i just can't remember for sure but at that time it was backwards compatible with the older versions. I will check my tuning laptop tomorrow if your still having issues, but go at it with the new timing and make sure your flash block and test connectors are good to go then run through it just like a normal flash or pull, until you key the ignition and confirm before the fans do their test cycle.

Our driver is generic with some modifications oddly enough its the only one that worked in house, standard tactrix drivers wouldn't respond at all and neither would vag com, or other OBD software cable drivers like swicom. You may uninstall your ECUflash , install our drivers then do a fresh install just to see. But i'm pretty sure it is just the timing that has got you locked down. Shout back man and let me know how it works out.

Spoke to Cody again today, he's going to find a client with a bugeye and do a complete write-up. I'll try some more tonight.
