OT: Playstation 2?
Okay guys, I have never really been into the whole nintendo/sega/playstaion thing....I was more into the commdore/ibm thing. Well it about time for me to once again upgrade my computer if I want to place some of the cool games coming out for the p.c...which I only use now for internet access. A playstaion or dreamcast seems like the way to go if I want to play games.
I was at the mall today with my g/f and I started looking at the Playstation 2 that will be arriving (hopefully) next month. Its slated to sell for 300 bucks, but also plays DVDs...which most of you probably know by now (I live under a rock) Anyhow, I saw some screen shots for grandturismo 2000 and they look killer! What is the general vibe about PS2. is it worth the $300 bucks? I was going to say screw it, and try and pre-order one..but I figured I would ask my fellow suby friends what you all think. Are any of you planning on purchasing one? The screen shot of the scooby looks killer!(from www.ign.com) Later JayB

I never get systems within the first year they are out just because they are so f**kin expensive (got my PSX a few years ago for $90 and my Dreamcast 3 weeks ago for $120). If I get a hookup I will do it, but otherwise forget it.
My biggest drawback on the PS2 will be the cost of games. Links that work - http://ps2.ign.com/ (PS2 info) http://ps2.ign.com/previews/13846.html (GT2000) [This message has been edited by 8Complex (edited September 24, 2000).] |

I will get PSX2 when it comes out. Why? I've been putting off buying a DVD player because of it.
It will play DVD's along with PS1 and PS2 games. So two things in one...werks fer me. |

Definetly worth getting!!! I saw some show on tv that showed someone playing the game with a Mistu EVO and it was awesome! You can even see the exhaust gas heat make your vision blurry like in real life!

Get it! The new Nintendo, GameCube, looks like a kid's toy - it's a purple cube, and the X-Box will probably just get a bunch of pre-existing PC games and nothing really new. I pre-ordered my in February, so mine is going to cost a whopping $230. Good luck pre-ordering it this late. I've seen some places saying they're sold out through Christmas and some into February. I've also seen places jumping the price up to $350.

If you get a PS2, expect to wait a while for anything worth playing on it. It's a cool piece of hardware though. My suggestion is to WAIT for XBOX and GameCube to launch before buying anything.
"Get it! The new Nintendo, GameCube, looks like a kid's toy - it's a purple cube, and the X-Box will probably just get a bunch of pre-existing PC games and nothing really new." Yes, the GameCube looks like a kid's toy. Last I heard these were videoGAMES. It's a slightly better system (hardware wise) than the PS2 from what people are saying (I'm good friends with one of the guys involved in developing and managing the new Metroid title, so my information is reliable). As for XBOX, at least you put the word "probably" in there, cause your theory is wrong (how do I know? Because I'm developing something for it, and know many others who are as well). Greg. |

I'm getting one, but I'm with the other's who are not jumping on the bandwagon right away, but will wait for plenty of software for it.
I don't see the price coming down soon though, especially with a lack of competition. Look at dreamcast - software selection still sux and it's a great machine. For now, I'll just play with my kid's Nintendo 64... Larry www.ImprezaRS.com |

The only reason Dreamcast game selection is low is because most places are keeping room for the PS2. Honestly I don't see it being the next best thing because you won't be able to copy games for it for quite a while. While most companies are developing games, most likely they'll develop them to fit onto a cd and just add music to make it over a gig and fit onto the DVD disc (which I might add will most likely be a hacked version of the DVD standard so the average Joe with a DVD burner (not a DVD writer since those don't even write to standards yet) won't be able to copy them.
Before anyone gets in a huff about the evils of pirating games and whatnot, come to the realization that the ability to pirate games for PSX is what made the system to big in the first place. Sega's Saturn (I believe... it's been a while and noone has heard jack about that system...) was and still IS better then PSX at rendering and final results. It took a little bit more effort to program, but the end results were fabulous. And BTW, Sega had anaolg controllers out for their system before Sony did, even though Sony DID encorporate that into their consoles from the beginning. Now if you want to see which system will overcome which, just sit back and watch as Sony drowns the world in advertising, pushing their system to the limit. And just to jab at Nintendo here, the reason they never made it big was because they skipped a generation between SNES and N64, gave time for PSX to take over the market and then came out with a console that you had to load cartridges (that couldn't be copied easily, mind you) into the system still. Sorry, I like fitting 100+ games into a CD binder. *shrug* and they were gone. PS. Sorry about the long post... big corporations get me in a huff occasionally, but when it is personal it just gets worse. |

X-Box (built by Microsoft and will be out soon) will kill PSX2. HAHAHAHA! Bill Gates will either outsell all consoles or buy them all out and get a monopoly. hahahaha.....butyeah I'll probably get one [psx2] for xmas since gt2000 and Final Fantasy. but if it is as slow as gt1 or 2 then i dont want it. what i'm really looking forward to is a need for speed game where i can race as a lamborghini roadster or the saleen s7 or ferrari f50. if they made an NFS game with all those in....then that will be 100x better than any gran turismo game.
8Complex: sony will drown the media? my friend told me some huge number that microsoft was putting into advertisement for their x-box. WELL more than sony. oh yeah and dreamcast can play all the old playstation games just fyi with a program called bleemcast. and it looks much better than what the psx2 can do for psx1 games. |

i got psc ps2(jp) and akso Dreamcast
the later 2 have same graphic i think the only different is the amount of graphic that ps2 can process at once is way more tha DC. (same quality but different quantity u could say) to be honest.. wait till it have more good games.. i look at my dc, it does not have much fun game really... but psx.. even its graphic look like **** now.. but it have alot of fun games. so wait for a bit and see if PS2 are gogin to have lot of good games or not.. (for now i only have fifa 2k by EA sports and tecken tag battle for my ps2) |

yeah i bought a used sega saturn a few yrs back and installed my own US/JPN switch. i still remember how many crap games sega released for the usa while denying us the hard stuff from japan. you know, kinda like wrx. playstation has its metalgear and gt1/2, but saturn had its niche in shooters. no other platform has yet to really put out a half-decent shooter besides einhander and rayX series, domestic or japanese. saturn had, for ex. soukyo, battlegaregga, sengouku blade, radiantsilvergun to made a few.. all import. a dead genre by now but a different kind of shooter, crisiszone (timecrisis 3) and silentscope, has been eating up my chips at D&B lately. -g

about pirating........ PS2 is already being copied, along with dreamcast and it so called GD-ROM(1gig CDs). All that they do to copy them is rip out some audio, or convirt it to mono.

OK... everyone listen up.
I may be only a new Scooby Specialist... BUT Im an expert vidiot. (videogame/idiot) PS2 will be successful and is worth buying. However, the smart cosumer will wait a bit before buying a PS2.(all though you'll have to wait anyway if you haven't preorder it a couple of months ago) Those people that say... they want it for a DVD player... are misguided. You can get a DVD player cheaper with more feature and a remote for less money. The PS2 launch lineup is far from strong. It is always like that when a new system comes out. This Christmas season belongs to Sega and the Dreamcast with its built in 56K modem... online games are the future and Sega has games comming out that are compatable with PC's. (4x4 Evolution is a must buy for any DC or PC owner) Sega even has an either net adaptor for those of you who are connect online via cable. To add further insult to Sony... Playstation games look better on the Dreamcast! The guys who developed BLEEM for the PC, now make BLEEMCAST for the DC. For those of you who arent familiar with Bleem... it is a playstation simulator. Many gaming sites report and post pictures that Bleemcast actually ehances original playstation games better than Sony own PS2! So... as of Oct. 8,2000... the day its released... you can play your enhanced Playstation games on the DC! The online hardware is not included with the PS2, which means more money to get online. Sony will need time to set up their own network. Which will be at least a year. Which about the same time Game cube and X-box will be released. The PS2 advantage is its advanced hardware. It has the capacity to make great 3D games! But developers need time to learn to make good games on a new system. Plus as the games with 3D graphics get more intricate, programmers need more time to create them. So I would personally wait a bit before investing my $381.60 into a PS2+$60 game. With more competition, prices will go down, online hardware will be available and more good games will be out for the system. |
