Cut the wiring harness off and solder or tape new leads on

Kartboy spacers won't work with all speakers, make sure you're pointing him towards ones that fit. Since we don't know exactly what model speakers he has, I wouldn't be so assumptive .

Also, don't tape the wires, that's messy and unreliable. If you're new to this game, then soldering isn't gonna happen, just invest in some decent butt connectors or crimp caps (a good set of crimpers is key as well, those cheapos are crap) and tie in the new wires.

Do you know how to test the polarity to make sure the speakers are wired up correctly? If they aren't, you'll have crappy sound, zero bass, and your ears will be angry.

If U bought Pioneer spks they should have come with spkr wire in the box. Cut the factory plugs off & use but connectors (crimps) to attach the after market wires to the FACT. ones. The Fact. wire with the Bright color ie. Red, Green. is your power (the large pin on your pioneers) and the LT. colors are groung (grey, blk.) The small pin on the Pioneers.

How do you do this with a DMM? The - one to the chassis and the + one to each wire? Then look for a + or - value?

You can modify the stock "mounts" by cutting out the stock speakers that are built into them. Most people don't do this because then they can never return the car back to stock (you are literally hacking apart the stock speakers).
