Default The Bloodhound Supersonic Car Project Test Fires Its Rocket Engine

Quote:

The Bloodhound rocket car has another year of development ahead of it before Wing Commander Andy Green of Britain’s Royal Air Force attempts to accelerate it to speeds upward of 1,000 miles per hour (the current land speed record is 763 miles per hour). In the meantime, the project is teasing us with glimpses of just how powerful this supersonic vehicle’s power source will be. Earlier today at Newquay Airport in Cornwall, UK, the development team test fired the rocket engine that will power the Bloodhound across the flats of South Africa next year. Hold on tight.
The Bloodhound project aims to design and build a car capable of shattering the 1,000mph mark, considerably faster than the current land speed record of 763mph.

The man behind the wheel of the rocket-propelled machine, Wing Commander Andy Green from the Royal Air Force, hopes children will become scientists and mathematicians after watching him power to 1.4 times the speed of sound.

The Ministry of Defence is backing the project it is hoped that it will inspire young people to get involved in science, technology, mathematics and engineering.

A team of five REME (Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers) experts will help build and maintain the car over the next two years in the UK, and be on hand during the record attempts in South Africa next year and in 2014

Why bloodhound? They aren't that fast and they tend to run all over the place trying to pick up a scent. Why not greyhound? Or cheetah?

I don't think it's the fast that's the hard part...it's the being fast but keeping it on the ground

I am waiting for Hip to come and say it should have AWD and be a coupe with a manual transmission for less than 35k, as it would be cheap to make.
