Default New rims for 2000 Subaru Outback

Hey guys,

I want to get some new rims for my 2000 subaru outback. I don't want anything stupid and ricer looking. I just want something different and for the time that I still have this car I want it to stand out and look a bit better than what it does now. I don't want to spend to much but I have found the rims I want, i'm just having some trouble finding the right tires.

I picked out these Drag DR-19's in 18's with a width of 7.5. I believe the tire size for this rim is 225/50/18. I really love the Nankang NS-II but they don't make one in that tire size. They make one in 225/45/18 but not 225/50/18. Would it still fit that rim or should I just not take any chances?

I don't have that much money, im 19 and in college so I'm not rich lol. If you guys know of any rims with the same style and cheaper, let me know. I don't really care much for name brand, as long as the rim is good, as well as the tire.

Drag DR-19 rims in 18x7.5
Nankang NS-II tires in 225/45/18

This is not my subaru, but this is how the rims look in person CLICK HERE

This is probably going to get moved over to tire and wheels forums by the Mods, but wheels look good and never heard of that brand name tire.

By the way what is your actual budget? Are these tires going to perform well for the summer in like traction wise like wet and dry roads? These are some questions you can get answered in another forum and look on tirerack and see what goes from there. Good luck!

Nankang is a new brand that is not very popular but I hear they are great tires. Anyways my budget isn't much, the cheaper the better. I asked my mechanic friend and he told me that those tires would fit on the rim but I would be at risk by bending and/or scratching the rim. The ride may not be so good either.

I guess i'm just going to wait a little longer and buy the Hankook Ventus V4 tires. Their $120 each but they look like really nice tires and the reviews are great. They will also fit the rim perfectly because they are 225/50/18

Which Hankook Ventus V4 are you referring to because there are different models out there. By the way wait to hear what members here on NASIOC say about getting the exact measurements for tires and wheels because like you said "I would be at risk by bending and/or scratching the rim."

I have 225/45/17 on my OEM BBS. This is the OEM tire size. My BBS are off an 05 STi so they are 17x8's.

I'm not sure if you know what the numbers mean but the first one 225 is the width of the tire.

The Second one is the aspect ratio (50, or 45 in my case) the wider you go on the tire with the same aspect ratio the taller the tire will be.

The last number is the diameter of the wheel the tire is being mounted on (18).

With a 225 width 45 aspect ratio should be fine.

ANY OEM 17" wheel (06+ WRX, 05+ Legacy GT) will look and fit great. You can find sets with tires for less than $600.

You don't "love" nankangs. They are all you can afford. They aren't a new brand by any means either, they've been around for about 10 years (maybe longer?), and have always constructed a completely crap tire.

Those tires are...crap. There are good cheap tires, you just need to do your research (fed 595's?).

Everyone that buys performance parts off of ebay thinks they are great parts.

The difference is that those people don't know better.

That's nice and all, but he's got an Outback, which comes from the factory with taller tires than your WRX. The 225/50-18 is the correct +2 size for his application.

It would fit the wheel fine, but would throw his speedometer and odometer off by 2.5%. Since the "correct" +2 tires (225/50-18) are available it seems silly to buy the wrong size.

As scooby4life already said, Nankangs aren't new. They've been around for as long as I can remember, and they've made cheap, crappy tires that entire time. There's a reason they're dirt cheap, and it's not because the people at Nankang are just really nice folks who don't want to make any profits.

Seems like a reasonable choice. Another good option available for roughly the same price at discounttiredirect.com is the Falken Ziex 912.

One thing you will learn is that the average consumer knows Jack and **** about tires. They spend $500 or $600 getting new tires mounted and balanced, they don't want to admit they spent all that money on crap. And chances are pretty good that people who are buying cheap-ass Nankang tires have never had "real" performance tires on a car, thus their basis for comparison is garbage. There are plenty of guys who will tell you that Nitto NT450s are great tires, when in fact they're a horribly dated design with the grip of hockey pucks. But hey, at least they last forever since the rubber compound is rock hard!

You'll be extremely hard pressed to find other tires as cheap as the Nankangs, other than other brands that also suck (like Nexen, for instance).

Unless you're dead set of the Drag wheels, my suggestion would be to find some 17" take-offs in the Classifieds here. Some 225/55-17s will cost $100-150 less than 225/50-18s, and there will probably be a better selection of tires, too.

Thanks for all of that ^^^^ but I have my mind set on the nankangs because they are cheaper. I drive an outback so im not looking for performance, I just want tires that will be fine and look good with the rims. I don't want 17's because that would be to small for me and just pointless to go up 1 inch from OEM in my opinion.
