Yokohama W*Drive ???
I know these are new model tires but I can't find much about them beyond Yokohama's site. Does anyone have any experience/thoughts on them?
Reason I ask is that I just got a good deal on a set. Gotta say that Yokohama's video was pretty cool at least... http://www.wdrive.info/en/theater/index.html

I've had them on my WRX for about a month now and think they kick ass. They have not seen any deep snow yet but have performed well on ice and a small amount of compact snow in temps down to 15 deg. I did some very spirited driving on winding backroads in temps down to 32deg and they handled very well. So far I'd say they are well worth the money.

I ordered a set from Discount Tire two days ago, I imagine I'll have them Monday or Tuesday. I kind of ordered them in the blind, since there's not much info about them. Good to hear a positive review from Leadfoot.

It's a pretty new tire, so there's not a lot of user info yet. Their website is just annoying to work with.
Now, ACAC(a german site that tests winter tires) did recently post their 07 reviews with the W.drive being tested. Scores compared to others I've look at in the past show quite well. At the very least, the tire looks quite promising and comparable to other options. |

Yeah, that's the same deal I scored. And I'm with you - for that kind of money I figured I can't complain if they're not the best tires in the world.

got mine last week. The seem to do very well so far. They handle rain good, compacted snow traction was great, no ice yet. So far i;m very happy with mine.

I have a set on my stock 06 wrx wheels (215/45/R17). We just got about a foot of snow here in Montreal, and they perform great in the snow. I also found them surprisingly quite on the highway (when dry). I definately would recommend them.

I didn't get much (really, any) opportunity to test them in snow, but as far as a winter performance tire goes I was pretty impressed. As ernest19 said, they're quiet, and seemed to offer very good dry traction for a snow tire. None of the tread squirminess that I've felt with softer "snow & ice" style snows.

I just put these on my 09 STI in 245/40/18 size. They are just as quite as the stock Dunlops, and we had our first snow 5+" here in Pittsburgh over the weekend and they performed great in the snow, great on hills and turns, no slipping whatsoever. I paid $190 per tire, and I have to say these are well worth the money. I'll have to update the treadwear quality once I get some more miles on them.

For those that have the W*drives, any more updates? Looked at them yesterday and will be getting a set next week (225/45/R18). They are listed as winter performance tires, are asymetrical, and V rated.

I had them on our tuned VW Tiguan 4Motion last winter and didn't get much chance to test them in the snow. The two times I was in snow, it was the wet slick packed stuff and they did not do well in that. I actually got stuck in 5" of untouched wet snow on a weak incline so I wasn't too happy about that. Makes me wonder how much of that issue was VW's nanny traction electronics causing the problem though. I'm trying to reserve judgement until a proper winter this year. Dry traction is excellent and wet is good too. This year we're running them again on the VW and I have Pirelli Sottozero serie II on my WRX.

Don' t forget to compare oranges with oranges...
A winter tire with a V speed rating is a tire for cold pavement... Such as the Pirelli, is not designed for deep snow... A Yokohama IG20 is designed for ice.. An Gislaved nordfrost 5 or Nokian Hakka 5 or 7 are designed for deep snow and those have a speed rating letter T... Personally I use a v rated winter from October till December, and then I use a studded Nokian Hakka 5... No compromise... |

I've got them on. 205/55/16. Second winter. I'll probably be going with something a bit more beefy next year. In the dry and wet, they're great. They make a funny noise during acceleration on wet roads. I had them out yesterday in the middle of Vancouver's first snowfall. Didn't have too much trouble getting going with the AWD, and seemed ok in the snow. Probably wouldn't want to push it too hard with these tires though.
