You're missing something only if you can't read. The new Forester uses electronic power steering instead of hydraulic power steering, like most other current Subarus.

And, the curse of EPS is as bad as usual:

"But the new steering is unsatisfyingly vague and doesn't return to center readily enough." (http://www.insideline.com/subaru/for...irst-look.html)

This is a bummer. I'm gonna hold on to my hydraulic-steering car until it, or I, bite the dust, whichever comes first.

I read somewhere that you don't need to use premium gas, but you'll only get the full 258 lb if you use premium. On regular unleaded they're estimating about 225... Here in Canada at Petro Canada gas stations we have a higher octane at 93.
Does anyone think that the xt will get the full 280 like the JDM does because their premium is 93.
Thanks for any input

Why does the U.S. version get the ugly shifter? I really liked the JDM automatic with leather boot. The U.S. just gets an ugly stick?

I keep wondering what a 296 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque Forester would be like, since that's what this engine makes in the JDM Legacy.

The steering felt decent, not quite as numb as I was prepared for, possibly because the electric assist is on the rack as opposed to the column. Rack-mounting the assist motor should also be an advantage for off-roading use as well.

The steering-with a new rack-mounted electric motor-feels a bit numb on center, but comes in nicely moving toward the edges.

On a flat, relatively low-speed handling course, we found the Forester XT to be nearly as nimble and well controlled as the Mazda CX-5, with steering that's among the best in the class.
From http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...orester-page-2:
Quote:
The electric-boosted steering, while not hugely communicative, nevertheless was reasonably weighted, quick enough for Pier 1 runs, and linear in its response.

For whatever it's worth, the steering weight was firm and I was pleasantly surprised how well the tires keep the Forester planted in corners.

The XT w/CVT gets 28 MPG so, presumably, like in other Subarus, a manual would get somewhat less... 25? 26?

lol. Subaru seems to have done a great job with its EPS. Impreza and BRZ have had mostly positive mentions of EPS

Guess I'll be hanging on to my 2004 XT. The new ones have been so neutered there's almost no reason to make one with a turbo. Why bother? The WRX is too adolescent so it looks like no more Subaru's for me.

The lack of the leather shift boot really cheapens the interior. How much more would that have added to the price?

Hopefully the L.A. reveal proves us wrong and they stuck with the JDM shifter and boot for the U.S. spec. Forester. I really don't understand the changes they make from JDM to the U.S. Forester.

I would think the mpg would drop with lower octane just like the power drops.

Had it been paired with direct injection or start-stop like the JDM/ EDM models, it might be something to write home about. Instead they saw the sales numbers and took another dump under the hood for the USDM Forester until 2013.
It is an ENTIRELY new design. It is the third generation of Subaru's horizontally opposed engines. Don't believe there is much of anything that can be swapped with the older motor.

And it would be the only vehicle in it's segment to actually offer a stick combined with AWD, good power, and options, even if it is Build-to-Order factory specification only, and not forced on dealer inventory lists.
There is a reason for this.....

The car has roof racks, but you have to negotiate with that dumb antenna anytime you want to load anything substantial.
Many reasons. One big one would be cost.

What I am curious about is does that wart replace the passenger side hood mounted mirror(that this clearly doesn't have)? And that would be why it's not on the USDM.

I hate the thought of Subaru making record sales, yet they still choose small designs that aren't aesthetically pleasing because of "cost". It's counter-intuitive.

Huh? So neutered? What does that even mean? I have seen a lot of foolish comments but those tend to come from H2BS.

Sounds like the EPS might be tolerable. Hyandai's implementation of it, in, for instance, their turbo Santa Fe is a freaking disaster. So much so I could never buy a vehicle with steering that bad. Only an FXT test drive will tell the story I suppose. Sounds like EPS is here to stay and it will only continue to improve.

Honestly, you'll hear many more because so many thought that Subaru was going to read their minds and make this new Forester just for them.

I stand correctted. I was always under the impression they were a few points above us.

I know the quality of gas we have is terrible though. We missed out on the "blue" series of engines from mercedes because they said they wouldn't reliably run on our **** gas.

Please stop posting, because you don't know what you're talking about. The Mercedes "blue" engines run on diesel, eejit.

The new USspec Forester will be displayed at the LA Auto Show later this month (see http://www.subaru.com/content/downlo...lease_LAAS.pdf) and SOA correctly describes the event as the new Forester's North American debut. But the LA Auto Show's website wistfully classifies it as a world debut (see http://www.laautoshow.com/DebutVehicles).

No one has mentioned it here but Subaru added more sound deadening material, the 2 Canadian reviews I read this morning talk about that. That's a great improvement over the older Foresters.

I would absolutely buy an XT if SOA makes it available with a 6-speed. Guaranteed, no doubt in my mind, I will walk into a dealer the day they go on sale and order one.

But if they don't, **** Subaru, never buying another one as long as I live.

Just out of curiosity, what would you buy instead?
