How many miles are on your car? At what mileage readings did you do your oil change(s)? Which Amsoil product do you use?

This is the Amsoil product that the Amsoil web site recommends for the 2012 Impreza:

http://www.amsoil.com/catalog.aspx?code=ASMQT-EA

Is that the "OEM" product I see people referring to?

OE (not OEM, our bad) is not what you are showing in your link, that is their Signature Series.

OE is synthetic 0W-20 but designed to be changed according to the factory recommended service interval.

XL has a longer service interval, 10,000 miles or six months, whichever comes first.

Signature Series has an annual or 25,000 mile service interval, though they recommend following manufacturer guidelines for replacing the oil filter unless you use their extended life oil filter which is good for 1 year/15,000 miles.

I changed my oil at 1200 miles to OE with a Subaru filter. I will change it early fall to Signature series, then change my oil filter at 6 months, and do another oil change next year in the fall.

I will probably keep using Subaru filters (I have 4 in my garage waiting), they are cheaper than the Amsoil extended life one and changing them once a year midway between oil changes should take me 5 minutes.

Right now I have about 4,400 miles, so that is 3200 miles with Amsoil OE and no oil loss. I didn't see any reason to use Signature Series for my early oil change as I knew I would change it once more this year anyway.

I drive less than 12,000 miles a year. I am comfortable with the extended life oil and using Amsoil in my car and I plan on driving this car for a long time. YMMV.

I plan to use XL when i change out the factory fill at 3,000 miles, I will run that for 7500, then switch to signature series.

Zeeper, thanks for the detailed info. Is this the first car you've done this with, or are you a long-time Amsoil user?

On a semi-related note, do you drain your oil from below, or using an extractor from above? If from below, did you install a Fumoto valve? Could the valve be reached without jacking the car?

First car I am using Amsoil in, I did my research and for the mileage I drive I would almost be doing annual changes anyway if I follow the Subaru interval.

I installed the fumoto at 1100 miles but won't use it for the first time until this fall. I don't think I have to jack it up but I might lift one side to reduce my crawling around.

OK. Can you please tell me the part number of the correct Fumoto valve, or provide a link to where you bought it?

F108N, ebay, search because you will inevitably do a search on a fumoto valve site that will tell you F105 is the right one, but it isn't. This has been hashed out several times in the impreza forum.

OK, thanks for the info. Did you replace the flat washer that ships with the valve with a crush washer?

I used the washer they provided, I figured if the valve shipped with a washer that failed, it would be all over the internet where people talk about installing the fumoto and never having a problem with it.

I have just over 8K on my engine now... I bought it, put over 3K on it in the first couple months. I then changed the oil at 3,800 and put in the 5.2 Quarts of Mobile 1 (whatever the top 15,000 mile stuff which was 10.30 a quart) and at 8,430 my oil light went on. I had to put in a quart and a half to get to full. Coming back from seattle at 3am and that light going on scared the piss out of me.

I drove onto a couple scrap 2x4s and that extra height helped a lot. Was very stable although I'll probably go with 2x6s or 2x8s next time. (Just used what I had lying around)

I just picked up a harbor freight jack (#68049, low profile, rapid pump, 2 3/4"-20" lift) and a couple of 3 ton jack stands with rubber pads, and a wheel chock.

I had one set of jack stands and an old jack that I just tossed.

Lifting the car isn't a big deal, and with this jack, no sweat.

Has anyone starting burning oil before the first oil change?

"Yes"

@1600, so I had oil changed. Then @3300, I added a quart.

So then you first noticed the oil consumption after the first oil change, right?

Seems like more people are having the low oil level issue. I really doubt its a sensor. People are "losing" quarts.

79, have you received any updates from Mastro? Did they do a compression test?

VW TDIs (in the current version) have problems with their High Pressure Fuel Pumps (HPFP) disintegrating. This requires more than simply replacing the faulty pump, because when this pump fails, it sends metal fragments throughout the fuel system (TDIs recirculate the fuel, so these metal fragments end up back in the fuel tank and everyplace else that fuel flows). The repair requires replacing the ENTIRE fuel system, to the tune of $8000!

At first, VW was blaming customers for accidentally putting gas into their tanks instead of diesel, or blaming the fuel supplier for mixing in gas or water that was causing these problems. As more and more customers were able to prove that none of these issues existed, VW started to back down. To further back VW into a corner, many TDI customers filed NHTSA reports, so now the NHTSA is investigating the TDI HPFP issue. I'm sure VW is not comfortable with this, and so now has started paying for this $8k job even for customers with HPFPs that fail outside of warranty.

I'm simply sharing this story so that Impreza owners can consider filing NHTSA reports regarding oil consumption. This will be most compelling if the situation could be considered dangerous and not just inconvenient (for example, "My oil light came on while I was driving on a 6-lane highway, and I panicked because I knew that I had to shut off the engine ASAP, but was having trouble getting to the shoulder of the road, which also would have been dangerous on such a busy highway").

I love how the buck was passed until it came full circle. As far as filing a complaint you would need to make sure you actually have a problem before doing this.

No news! But that's GOOD!
VW has always had fuel pump issues, it seems. My 71 fastback had FI and the pump was a nightmare! The best Diesel I ever had was a 1.5 in a 79' Rabbit. That was a great little car.

How do you define "actually have a problem"? Is it a problem that you get a low oil pressure light on your dash every 1200 miles?

I know, by frequently checking your oil level, that low pressure light can be avoided. But is it a problem to need to check it that often?

I'm hoping that my car doesn't consume oil like that. But if it does, you can bet that I'd be carrying a quart of oil with me at all times, and probably checking my dipstick at each gas-up or so.

Pressure or level, because i think we have a light for both

The oil level light is yellow, the pressure light is red.

For starters you can perform a compression test and examine the Plugs.

Since people are finding that there are 2 dip types of dipsticks and 1 measures too high at full Look back and find the post were 79 tells the dealership that they overfilled his car and had some of the oil removed. He was starting low when he drove from the dealership. He might be burning a little oil but not as much as he thinks. A little oil is normal.

Maybe the dealerships are filling to the fill line for other peoples cars and causing them to run low also. Im sure it will get fixed in time
