I got myself a K & N cone filter on the TB with the hood scoop open, but on days it rains i switch back to my ganzflow. I get great HP up top espically when its winter outside. My cone is ice cold after I drive the car.

I just ordered this yesterday

The COBB CIA? Am I being tracked by the government?

Anyhow, I agree on this the COBB CAI is the way to go.

If you take apart your intake, in the filter casing with the filter out there is a little black "square." I always wondered what it was, guess it's a tracking device.

alright, i will through out one more question here, if i mount the intake manifold in the position where the scoop is functional. should have i have need to worry about rain and snow and such when i am going up snowboarding. that is my biggest hesitation, i am not sure what the effects of that will be.

save yourself the hassle and worry and just get the COBB. I've had mine a while now and had no problems and it's been great.

its not a huge issue, but i can be a problem, especially if the hood would be covered in snow, i could see snow falling in being a problem, probably safer to use the cobb, but that injen CAI looks pretty nice, just haven't heard anything on it

alright sounds good then, i was thinkin that, and i will probably just go with either the cobb or the injen, i have heard good things about both. But what about exhausts for the 2.5rs, any recomendations?

My first reaction- just get a Cobb. If you're lucky you might even find one used.

Second reaction- the GravelSport is cool, but you are unlikely to find any for sale, they stopped making them some time ago. You would be ok driving in light rain/mist/fog etc., but I wouldn't guarantee more than that. I took the backing plate off my hood scoop and drove through some hellacious rainstorms last winter with my snorkelectomy, although I retained the stock airbox. Snow would have almost no effect, due to it's lower density (compared to liquid water. As long as you don't get more than 100cc or so of water in it at once, you will be fine. It's unlikely you could even get 5-10cc of water in one cylinder at a time- and that would probably have little to no effect on the engine.

I don't think I've heard of anyone regretting purchasing their Cobb CAI (by the way, sparselylit, CAI = Cold Air Intake, not a government agency).

Hood scooped air: Funny how that Gravelsport intake sort of disappeared. It seemed a good design, albeit a wee bit pricey.

I really dot know how much water it takes to seize an engine... I hear from others on this site, that it's not a pretty sight and requires a sudden bolus of liquid. In terms of rain, I really think the concern of ingested rain water is very very much overrated in this site. I say this only because the aviation industry relies on wide open induction and no advisers effects, even at revs and ingested volumes comparable to ours. In fact, the aviation EJ22 and EJ25 aviation engines have no complex ingestion apparatus and have attained very high ratings as safe, reliable engines without adverse-weather-restrictions.

A used Cobb would be a good thing. A new or used Ganzflow, would also be a pretty good thing.

edit for my bad spelling

I'm using a Rallitek intake on my 2.5l Legacy. From what I've heard, the Rallitek intake is one of the few (including the Cobb) that doesn't cause the engine to run too rich. It's a steal too at less than $170.

I've heard that the Injen is particularly bad. Sport Compact Car used one on their Impreza 2.5rs project and without S-AFC tuning there were significant and noticeable power losses in the top end of the power band. I'm sure you could find more details by searching. I know I've seen some related threads.

EDIT: Sorry, I meant to say lean in my last two posts . Either way, I meant more air, not enough fuel.

Wow, I'm a little ignorant. Could someone please describe how an intake could cause such alteration of mixture (assuming a functional MAF/MAP and ECU)? Thanks.

No. Injen didn't even make an intake back then. They were using a Minnam or a JC Sports. That's only a problem with the MAF cars anyway, the original poster has a '00 MAP RS.

As for why? I would guess the car is taking in more air and the computer is not adding enough fuel to compensate.

JC - you make a good point. I think this only matters with MAF cars, like mine.
