Default 08 Sti: Wheel width vs. Tire width VS. offset and more. HELP!

So I have a decision to make for my 08 STi

I have done research, and gone through threads, but there seems to be conflicting info, and I am hoping someone can help ad clarity!

So stock, the wheels are 18 x 8.5 with 55 offset

stock tires are 245/40/18

So common options people seem to be going with are 18 x 9 or 18 x 9.5, with the stock sized tires, and lower offset (like 29)

now, from my understanding (and I am no expert, which is why I am posting! ), this will push the wheel further out towards the fender, giving it a more 'aggressive' look.

but since you are using the stock tire size, wouldnt this then stretch the tire out too much (ala vw. haha)?

Now, I have also seen that people have used tires as wide as 285's on the stock rims, without rubbing. (and of course the higher offset of 55)

Now, I am getting advan RS wheels, most likely 18 x 9.5. I dont want to use the stock tires, but of course am worried about fit and rubbing

(and also, when going to a different size tire, it will change the overall height a little... but not much, although something to still take into consideration)

it seems, from my research, the best way to go, is get the RS's with the 45 offset (versus the stock 55, and the more 'aggressive' 29 or 35)
And then get a 275/35/18 inch tire

the stock 245/40/18 are 25.7" tall, where a 275/35/18 would be 25.6" tall. not a huge difference - and I also know, depending on what tire brand, that may vary as well

but with the 45 offset, it should push it out a little more than stock, providing a little bit more room on the inside (I would either be doing springs/struts or coils, not keeping it stock, but not lowering it more than 1"), and still give enough room for the tire on the fender side (I dont have an issue rolling the fenders if need be)

So if my thought process and reasoning correct here? Or am I missing something, or looking at it wrong?

anyone with more knowledge and expertise that can chip in, it woudl be appreciated

thanks!

Not sure specifically about the '08, but a general tire note is that a stretched tire will have better turn in response, and will actually be faster on the track despite a tiny decrease in overall grip. The stretched tire triangulates the sidewall, so when you turn the rim, there is less delay from sidewall roll to for the contact patch for the tire to develop grip.

downside is it's easier to curb a rim!

well that I am aware of
But also, there is a point when you stretch too much, and it puts in danger the integrity of the tire
and I think putitng a stock 245 on a 9.5 inch rim is pushing the limit.

Yes, better turn in is good, but if you end up losing all traction since it is stretched too much, then you lose all the benefits of big tires
