Default I have nothing but the utmost respect for those deploying to overseas.

Especially for military personnel going into hot zones. Working at the State Department has given me a taste of what its like to have your life put on hold for a time to be sent overseas. I obviously have a lot more choices in terms of actually oking whether or not I want to go overseas, but its a stressful thing. I can't imagine what its like for those that have to leave their families for a year or two to be station in some god awful place.

I'm stressed out as hell over being in Europe (Rome) for 3 weeks in November. Worried about the wife, worried about myself being in a strange environment for that long. I've done this before going to Morocco for my job and that was a great experience but it wore me down. My friends think its funny that I'm stressed given that I'm going to Rome, but being taken out of your life and routine for 3 weeks is rough. I don't care if they are sending you to the playboy mansion.

For those serving overseas and putting their life on hold all I can say is that I salute you.

Been in Korea for a year and a half. It's tough at times, but I get by. But I have respect for those in combat zones, they feel the being away thing the hardest.

I'll never understand how people can voluntarily sign up for this. It destroys marriages, their wives cheat/divorce them, they don't see their kids grow up, and they risk life and limb for peanuts in pay.

I mean I appreciate it 100% and I'm thankfully for the people who have served, but I don't think that I can ever get my arms around someone wanting to do it. I could see if they were single and didn't really have a lot on their plate.

I considered joining the military right after high school, but after not being able to get a definite answer about anything, I declined. I needed to know where I was going, when, and for how long.

I'm glad that so many are willing to do this and help keep us safe.

Some people need structure, other enjoy the drama of change. I'm on my 5th country in 10 years - I get bored with stuff real fast.

Many sign up before marriage/kids. Some stay on in the reserves trying to reach a service year mark. They basically gamble that there won't be a 'war' in the time they're in. Unfortunately we average about a war a decade.

many sign up for the "world of hotties tour", I think of it as serving my country and a few wemenz at the same time!

And they give you money for booze too! It's a sweet deal...

Imagine men and women who are idealistic enough to devote themselves to preserving the nation and the ideals it represents. That's how.

Yes, the divorce rate of Army officers was up. It went from less than 1.9% to almost 6% in 2004 but is now down again to around 2% as new programs have been put in place.

Last year, the divorce rate for the Army was 3.5%, Navy 3.0%, Marine Corps 3.7%, and Air Force 3.5%. There is no comparable statistic for comparing civilian divorces, because people leave and join the miltary each year. 43% of marriages end in divorce within 10 years, so this is a reflection of society.

I agree 100%. It is a great experience if you are single but really sucks if you are married.

The only guys I know that re-enlisted after getting married were either stuck because they would not be marketable in the civilian workforce or generally disliked thier wives or married life in general and they acted as a single man would when on deployment.

Left the Army this past September just after finishing 15 months. It has had a definite positive impact on my life and has made me a more productive citizen.

Will I ever rejoin? Never. However, a lot of people excel in the structured military life-style and would flop in the real world. I'm too young to be sucked in and get too complacent, so I left while I could.

http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com....html

A family photo that shows a little girl beside her father and his fellow soldiers in uniform as they prepare to go to war has resonated well beyond the tight knit Bennethum clan.
Four-year-old Paige Bennethum really, really didn't want her daddy to go to Iraq.
So much so, that when Army Reservist Staff Sgt. Brett Bennethum lined up in formation at his deployment this July, she couldn't let go.
No one had the heart to pull her away.
The commanding officer allowed Paige to say goodbye as her dad prepared to ship off from Fort Dix.
Paige's mom Abby captured the moment with her camera and her aunt passed the image along to a Berks County, Pa. newspaper.
"I've had strangers looking me up online, sending me messages that they are touched by it ... offering a lot of support," Abby Bennethum told NBCPhiladelphia.
The picture took on a life of its own online this week. Abby says that suddenly, people were knocking on her door. "Literally overnight, there's all these people that just want to do anything they can," she says. Though she says her husband hasn't seen any stories about his family yet, he expects to.
For her part, Paige still remembers how she felt that day in July. Looking at the picture of herself - her dad now overseas - Paige remembers, "I didn't want to let go of him."
She calls the work he does transporting supplies across the Iraqi border, "just nice."
But that doesn't change her feelings.
"I just miss my dad right now," she says. Sgt. Bennethum, 30, is expected home next July. Until then, Paige plans to help her mom take care of her little sister and a new baby that's on the way.

It's a lot of fun when you're young, but when you're older most people want a little stability.

I've never been in a high ops-tempo job, thankfully. The sometimes frequent short duration trips, although they are usually to nice locations, I've been doing lately can even be a drag sometimes.

How people handle the 1 year deployments, I have no idea.

My parents let me drop out of HS and get a GED. After that I enlisted in AD Army. I had my 18th bday in LSA Anaconda. Stayed in the region for 24 months. I was going nowhere, I had 4 credits at the end of my JR year. It was the best thing that I could have ever done. I constantly kick around the idea of going back.

What's that first day off like?
I got out in early 06. The first day back in the states, was awesome! I was under 21 and got a bunch of drinks bought for me at a steakhouse, drank a few beers, ate a big bloody steak (threw it up in the bathroom). All I did was sleep. I took a lot of sleeping pills and slept in my waterbed.

First day out of svc. I don't remember it, as I went on a couple year binge of mixed feelings, emotional issues, and so on. It wasn't good.
