Default 2014 Ford Fusion Gets New 1.5-liter Four-Cylinder Turbo in North America *Edited

Carscoop: http://www.carscoops.com/2013/04/201...ts-new-15.html

Quote:
The team over at FordInsideNews claims to have laid its hands on the Blue Oval's 2014 Order Form. In the order guide, it is stated that the 2014 model year Fusion will gain a sixth engine for the North American market in the guise of Ford's brand-new 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder EcoBoost petrol unit, which premiered on the sedan's Chinese-market sibling, the Mondeo, just last week.
No output numbers were mentioned for the North American model, but in China, Ford said this three-cylinder engine is projected to produce 177hp (132 kW) at 6,000 rpm and peak torque of 177 lb-ft (240Nm) from 1,500 to 4,500 rpm.

Currently, the Fusion is available with the following gasoline engines in the States: a 175hp 2.5-liter inline-four, a 178hp 1.6-liter turbo'd inline-four (EcoBoost), a 240hp 2.0-liter turbo'd four (EcoBoost), and a 141hp 2.0-liter hybrid powerplant in both regular (Hybrid) and plug-in (Energi) variants. This leads to the question why would Ford want to have three engines produced roughly the same output at 175-178hp?

The report claims that the answer is the 1.5-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost will be available with an automatic transmission and Stop-Start, while the 1.6-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost will drop both the auto gearbox and the Start-Stop system and be offered only with a manual transmission.

Other less important changes noted in the order guide include the availability of two new colors named Sunset and Dark Side, while eliminating the Bordeaux Reserve and Gingerale shades, and the addition of a new interior package and "Rid Brick" premium leather options.

Needless to say, we will have to wait for an official release to confirm whether all these updates will indeed apply to the 2014 Fusion.

.1 liter less, 1 whole cylinder less, got rid of the most luxurious high class color other than black, and eliminating the fuel efficient additions of the 1.6... Why add another engine to the mix? They could have just added a manual to the 1.6 and called it done.

3 cyl engines are HORRIBLE pieces of machinery...

1st time I have been disappointed by a decision/refresh from Ford in a while.

Triumph Speed Triple might disagree with you about that estimation of 3-cylinder engines.

But no, a 3-cylinder would not be my choice for a car, either.

That is a lot of variation for Fusion. One would think that would add a lot of cost overhead, otherwise, why wouldn't companies like, ahem, Subaru, offer more engine options in their cars?

The 1.6 is already available with a manual. It's the 2.0 that's not available with a manual. I bet this 1.5 gets better real-world fuel economy than the 1.6, which has been getting a lot of complaints.

Why is that? Are they difficult to balance?
I'd say they should provide more torque down low (larger bore) than a 4 cylinder engine all other things being equal.
They might be less willing/able to rev but that's not a concern in a family sedan. People like early/easy access to torque/power in these kind of vehicles (again, we're talking about family haulers).
In any case, it looks like Ford is planning to keep the 4-cyl 1.6l Ecoboost around so everyone should be happy.

3 cylinders definitely have some inherent balance issues, but so do inline 4 cylinders. I'm sure the Furd engineers can/have figured it out.

Easy answer, Ford is a massive company compared to Subaru.

Rumor was a 3 cylinder, but I believe that's been confirmed as incorrect and that the 1.5 L is a 4 cylinder.

Yeah... good to hear it is a 4 cylinder. Less vibration.

I think initial reports were 1.5L 3 cyl ecoboost (i.e. based off the 1.0L 3 cyl ecoboost) but Ford recently clarified that it's a 1.5L 4 cyl ecoboost.

For those wondering why Ford built a new engine with .1 less liters than the 1.6L 4 cyl ecoboost is for the Chinese market where a new law puts different taxes on engine displacement. If I understand correctly, vehicles less than 1.6L will have the lowest taxes and go up as engine size increases into different brackets (1.6L to 2.0L, >2.0L to 2.5L, >2.5L).

Never drove a 3 cylinder car before. It would be interesting to tryout once it hits Hertz and Budget rentals.

I had one as well.

I honestly remember it fondly, going up a hill in 3rd gear going 60mph slowing down with the pedal floored.

Getting on the freeway onramp from the traffic light, doing my best imitation of a drag racer, while at the same time accelerating no faster than the grandma driven camry behind me.

good times, good times.

I dont know if it will be like a geo metro. The geo is small and compact. This fusion is the size of a camry I think. Or something close to that. So, Im imagining it will handle like a boat with a turbo.Pssssstt.. PSsstt (bov)

I've never seen Passat spelled that way, but I knew what you were talking about from the description.
