I have recently been having over heating problems with my 98 lgt. So far the thermostat water pump and radiator have been replaced. Somehow there is still air getting in the system. Any opinions

My 99 Limited blew a head gasket at 147k miles while I was doing wheelies in an empty Just For Feet parking lot full of snow a couple of years ago. I had my brother replace it for me and it's never been the same since. Intermittent overheating and such. I traded it for my wife's car.
I heard the dealerships were using in WRX head gaskets to replace those that were blown? Anyone can confirm that? |

Just blew my second gasket @210k. This time though, I'm swapping in my JDM EJ20 block and heads, until I have time to do the wiring and pop the turbo on there.

My 2.5 had a head gasket leaking issue & then it was repaired but the repairs came too late. The constant overheating caused the internal bearings to break down & rod #3 punched its way through the top of the block, necessitating my need to create a hybrid (25D heads/22E block). I did it because I never wanted those previous issues to ever happen again.

Outback 1 owned since new:
MY-1997 Trans manual Head gaskets went at ~275000 kms. caught early when oil showed up in antifreeze. Head gaskets replaced. Now at 380000 kms and running strong. Outback 2 bought used. MY- 1997 Trams manual Head gaskets blown when I Bought the car with 260000 kms. Replaced the head gaskets right away. At 290000 something bad and noisy happened to the crank. I suspect the previous owner had driven for a while with the head gaskets swapping oil and antifreeze and bearing damage had begun. Replaced engine with jdm turbo ej20k. |

Head Gasket
My-04
Miles - 129,000 trans - Auto Age - 8 years Name Outback Head gasket obviously a problem at about 125,000 miles - rapid overheating and a strong smell. It may have been failing much earlier because that "sweet smell" was present for a very long time - as early as 40,000 miles. we always had it serviced at the Subarau dealer so I always assumed that the specified coolant additive was used. |

Are you a time traveller? It's 2012, and you've already got 210,000 miles on your 15-year-old 2011 car?

I'm considering the purchase of an '03 Legacy wagon with the 2.5 non-turbo... From what I've read the '03 supposedly isn't affected (according to Subaru). I don't see any signs of external HG failure and the coolant looks clean, the car's got 130K on it... I should be in the green as far as HG is concerned, no?? That's my only real issue with the car, it looks to be in great shape! Any input would be greatly appreciated from 03 owners or those knowledgable

MY - 1997
Miles - 220k Trans - 5MT Age - 15 The previous owner said Subaru had an engine recall and went in for an engine swap at 40k miles (I purchased her at 80k miles). Therefore only 180k on this engine but zero issues with the head gasket, or really anything with the car. As far as things that have been replaced that wore out on their own (stuff I didn't break) I've replaced the radiator, alternator, a set of front wheel bearings and the driven gear that turns the VSS. Funny thing about that is the shop I took it to tore the trans apart to get to it and they said all the gears were in perfect condition as of 170k miles. Quote:

just bought an oo with 169K. I'm considering pulling the motor and changing the HG's now as a precaution. It needs a timing belt anyway...

Got an 01 automatic L sedan with a blown seal somewhere, dripping oil slightly and hitting the exhaust at the Y pipe when I drive, anyone got a fix for it? Or should I just let it be bc it only seems to leak about a half a quart every 3000?

98 gt wagon first blew at 170, I didn't do the work and it only lasted to 210, I did the work this time and replaced it with the six star gaskets. 223 thousand now and looks good.
