-sorry for the edit. but where exactly did you guys file down on the H9 bulb??

did you add the HID kit on the stock Halogen headlights? or did you retrofit them? really considering of doing a PnP kit like you said you did if it doesn't blind anybody .

for the h9 bulb the little tab inside the bulb the one closest to the bulb it self is the one that needs to be filed down.. If you take your h11 bulb out and hold them side by side you will see it .

Hey all quick question, I saw an earlier post saying no one has experienced any burning or overheating yet but has anyone running the 65w H9's for a while with painted headlights seen any damage to the painted areas?

I don't Have painted headlight ( I wish I did ) but I have read a lot on the lighting and I have never seen anyone with a issue. Go to the picture part and find people with painted headlights and pm and ask..

I prefer duct taping 2 flashlights to my hood. That way i dont have a bunch of wires to worry about.

Are they LED so they last longer? I would be a rebel and use old school flashlights and make the beam pattern different!

FWIW I've been running H9's for the past 2 years and my passenger side just now blew. Wiring was ok so it was just the bulb(coil part split). Highly recommended if you're on the fence.

I'm impressed that you got 2 years out of your H9's. You must not do a lot of night driving. Mine only lasted about 8 months. Still think the upgrade is worth it.

Maybe I'm just lucky tho I guess 'a lot' is relative. Drive home from work is at night 5x a week about 30 mins a trip.

My driver side blew out after a about a year and a half, then the next one to blow was the driver side about 6 months later.

I'm careful to clean the surface of the bulb with alcohol and canned air before I do the final installation. It is impossible not to touch it while modifying the housing. It is also surprising to see how much dirt is on the bulb right from the box, brand new. There is a layer of dirt on there that probably doesn't help with longevity if it isn't cleaned off thoroughly..

I wonder how many people accidentally touch the bulb, and never clean it afterward before installation? Anything left on the surface will blow the bulb prematurely.

Has anyone tried the led bulb conversion? wondering if this would work for those as well, since heat wouldnt really be an issue, just fitment

Have not been able to find a LED bulb that has good of light output as a stock H9 bulb.

I am not an LED expert but an LED system with enough output to be used as main beam WILL have heat issues.

I'm also no expert, and fitment shouldn't be an issue. There is no difference between an LED H11 and an LED H9 (or H/900* whatever) other than the threads/adapter, so no modifications needed.

The main problem with the LED plug and play is, incorrect beam pattern/non usable light. It can't replicate what the halogen bulb does in it's reflector, so it's not a viable option.

Is there any way to modify the female part of the h11 socket so that it can accept a h9 bulb? I don't want to go through the process of filing down every bulb... taking me quite a while!

Are you talking about the "mounting socket" portion of the bulb (where it mounts to the light housing)
Or the electrical socket portion of the bulb where you have to grind out the tiny tab between the contacts?

About the "mounting socket" portion, I did not modify the bulb in any way. You can wiggle it in if you slightly angle it before twisting to lock.

About the electrical socket tab, if you don't want to modify every bulb, I think they only thing you can do is replace the H11 electrical connectors with H9 connectors. You can either cut/resolder or de-pin the H11 and re-pin with the H9. The later is probably a better option.

You can purchase an H11 to H9 adapter:

I would gladly take a few seconds to trim each bulb instead of adding additional resistance (and voltage drop) with additional connectors splices and solders.

Not for H9
By S. Wendler on January 22, 2014

This states that it will fit the H8/H9/H11 connector. IT DOES NOT. It will fit the H8 and H11 connector, but the H9 has a slot on top and bottom, and these connectors only have the slot on one side. Unfortunately, I bought it for an H9 bulb, so this will not work.

I just bought one out of pure curiosity.

I'll let you know if that reviewer knows what he's talking about or not.

I got these adapters in the mail the other day. It works fine, all you have to do is mod the one end of the adapter in the exact same way you mod the H9 bulb.. well the opposite way I guess, you just cut out the tiny piece of plastic in the plug that doesn't allow the H9 to slide on, and then you are done.

No more modding every single H9 bulb, you just mod this adapter once. It took 3 minutes. It looks pretty high quality and waterproof otherwise. I think I will use it and see how it works.

$4.19, no tax, free shipping? How can you go wrong?

No hate at all, but the point is you are trying to improve lighting by installing the H9 bulbs, but at the same time you add connections and wiring which impact overall resistance and reliability of the circuit.

Increased resistance of the added connections equals voltage drop equals lumens reduction. It might not be a huge voltage drop but the lumen output decrease with voltage is not linear, more like exponential, so I prefer to err on the side of keeping/improving lighting performance. For this reason I would personally trim the bulbs and leave the wiring alone. That's what I did on my bugeye JMDs to install 9011 in place of the 9005.

Well I will decide whether or not I want to use them after I test them.
