ok, ended up pulling the cts and testing it at different temps which all check out fine. wired up a 0-5K ohme potentiometer to test the ecu/wiring and hooked it to the cts plug and dialed in resistences i knew correlated to certain temps and viewed it on my laptop via romraider the ecu processed it correctly.

then i looked at my hoses figured out that i had moved a hose that use to be higher than the crossover tube and i must have had some air in there so now it just collected at the crossover tube hosing the cts. moved the hose and reburped the system and its running like she use to and the temps match and the fans are now triggered like they are suppose to. if nothing else, learned a lot with testing sensors and playing with potentiometers lol

thanks pete. it's actually not that loud, wife doesn't mind the bov or the exhaust so if she good with it, im good with it

Spoke to a Britain with a variation of a similar set up and after a little ribbing with "told ya so," he described how he purges his by cracking the hose that is on the end of the heater line that loops back the to T stat. he said he takes a long screw drive and once its up to temp opens slightly and it will blow off steam like a tea kettle and once water starts to come out its done and just tightens it back up. may try to figure out how to put little bleed valve in there somewhere to make it easier.

well onto the next project for now, exhausting the radiator hot air out of the front bay so i dont have an eternal heater going for the summer and to keep it off of the fuel cell.

back together and ready for testing. fingers crossed.

Now that cooling is essentially done, air is managed out of car and staying cool, time to start on the TY758 WRX tranny. Here are a few shots taken during the tear down, pretty simple, lots of case through bolts, only 4 internal bolts, a few love taps and she opened right up . Btw, the new LSD pictured is a factory JDM unit and will receive the Subarugears reverse ring and pinion and outside will get a 930 to Subaru flange.

You know you have been inside of a few too many Subaru transmissions when you see a picture of a case split and you can smell the gear oil through the picture

lol, i hear ya. i use to 4wheel a lot and fixing broken axles on the side of trails came flooding into my memory. your limbic lobe (memory area of brain) located right next to your olfactory (smell) cortex so makes sense but always fascinates me when it happens

buttoms up

Looks good Ron. Can't wait to see this all go together. Should be pretty simple to swap in the transmission. Have you checked tunnel clearance yet?

Jamie, ma man, fancy seeing you here hope Penny is coming together well and tuning on boost soon.

Well i clearance the opposite side of the case last weekend and she spins in the correct direction now thats its facing the 'right way.' the reverse ring/pinion is state side now but heading to Weddle Injustries for REM treatment then I'll reassemble upon return. I will be cutting down the mid section with will be the new nose cone next weekend. I have not yet done any addressed any fitment but will MAKE it work. will have to still address hydraulic clutch but one step at a time.

i need to stop by the 914world and see your progress. i may give you a call, im helping with a buddies ms3 on his 3.0 911. issue w/ hall sensor / 60-2 trigger wheel

cheers

Finished up trimming the new nose cone and plugging it up. Ready for assembly. Still need to pick up the ring/pinion, flange and lock out from Ambryn in the next week or 2 but wanted to compare my spare 4 speed 901 before I gave up on the 901. It nearly identical!!! Overall, Bell hosing face to tip of shift rod housing 73.5 vs 74.0 cm (Porsche to Subaru respectively), bell housing face to flange center 16.5 vs 20 cm (Porsche to Subaru respectively). My only fear is the actual position on the shift rod at 10 o'clock vs 6 but im sure I can make it work.

but before, we popped it in and connected the absolute basics to prime it then fired her up. sounds rough but only the basics to run (no WBO2, no MAF, no alt, no nothing) and she fired up on the first try!

This is an awesome Thread!!

Unfortunately a driver who wasn't paying attention slammed into my 03 WRX last week and it's totalled. But the motor is still in fresh condition! 34,xxx miles after being rebuilt with forged rods and pistons and is a EJ205 stroker motor.

Ive been wanting to do something like this for a while, So I'm hoping with some insurance money and a lot of patiences I can find an 912 with a blown engine to do the same swap into. Lucky for me, I have some family that worked on and owned Porsches, and I have completed Subaru to Subaru swaps so I'm hoping I can do as good of work as you have with this build!

Cheers!

Sweet.... I'm still following to see how the linkage, and axles fit. Hopefully I'll be doing some similar work on my car this winter.....

Did the rear seats need any massaging to fit the subaru transmission?

HougieBear,
Sorry to hear that, that sucks! It's getting harder and harder to find solid rollers but they turn up here and there so just have to be prepared when the opportunity presents itself. good luck.

pksystems,
thanks, i have a few ideas how i will address the linkage and axles so stay tuned. I think think i will have to massage the seat area but i have no issue using the BFH to make it fit.

no real update, waiting for parts.

Glad to see this thread. I've been stockpilling all the parts to do this to my 1959 Karmann Ghia for over a year while the brakes, body work and suspension are done..
Thanks

That is gonna be a be bad ass, please post up when you start putting motor/trans! Got a link to a current build thread to take a sneak peak at the body/brakes/suspension so far?

took delivery of some parts. first, those gears are AWESOME! thanks todd at subarugears.com for some nice pieces. beside the great work that todd did, it was sent to Weddle for the REM treatment and now its like a mirror finish. these things are beautiful, but despite that, once the case is bolted together, i NEVER what to see their beauty again!
I bolted the ring to the factory LSD and put it in the case half. it needed a touch more clearancing than the open diff and factory ring

pulled the bearing off the open diff and install them on the LSD keep the matched bearing/race together.

then pull the gears and bearings off the original pinion and install it on the new subarugears pinion

bolted the pinion assembly to the case and used the pinion depth tool and with the original 2 shims, nearly perfect. i'll have to get some gear marking compound to check the pattern this week and install the seals/gaskets

Beautiful work. It will be interesting to see how this bolts in. I wonder if you will have to change your motor mounts since there won't be an adapter plate anymore.

I'm sure since the EJ weighs so little and it'll be more forward, that thing will handle like a dream!

checked clearance with pinion depth too and it looks spot on but need to check pattern. ring/pinion didn't come with marking compound and of course none of the local parts stores has any and the gm shop is closed on sunday. oh well, pick some on tomorrow. btw, GM 1052351 gear marking compound

I noticed in the other forum thread you had to cut the 912 motor mounts..... If you are moving the engine a bit further forward, is there anyway to use the stock mounts with the subaru motor? I'm leaning towards 911 mounts if it won't fit...

yes, correct, i did had to cut out the 912 stock mounts, they hit the cover of the DOHC so i couldnt raise it high enough. If it were a sohc, it probably would have fit fine or if 911 mounts. if you mount from the rear, you will have to use a brace to Small Car Performance makes for their Van conversion. i elected to use the stock mount location and and motor mounts and just welded on supports to the chassis more forward. this gave me more room in the back for the turbo and exhaust components.
