Default About time: NJSP cracking down on snow forts on top of vehicles.

the new jersey state police are cracking down on people leaving snow piled on top of the cars/trucks/tractor trailers.

it is law: if you snow or ice from the your vehicle falls off and causes an accident you can and will be held liable.

So clean the snow off your dam minivans and SUVs, and trucks and everything..

DONT BE SO LAZY!

Jay

No, just being enforced now, first started back in the blizzard of 96,

State Police where actually at reststops on the turnpike, handing out fliers to inform the public, no summons where given at the rest areas but they did say they have been giving sitations on the road.

If those snow hats fall off and cause an accident, how would the offending drivers even realize it? They'd be too busy chatting on their phones and beating their kids.

Seriously, they can't enforce this law enough. I can't believe some people are stupid enough not only to drive around with a foot of snow on their roofs, but also with snow covering all the lights and rear window. Guess they figure they've never looked out of the rear view mirror or used their signals before, so why start now? :monkey:

Default Asking for a flame, yet I journey forward...

I do believe this is the stupidest thing that I have ever heard (but then again, it is New Jersey!) Has anyone here every tried to get on the top of a semi-trailer? Thought not! Does anyone realize that many of these vans have translucent, lightweight fiberglass roofs that WILL NOT support a human, especially when cold? Thought NOT!

You know what prevents ice hitting cars on roadways??? COMMON SENSE and FOLLOWING TRAFFIC RULES! Three (count them 3) second following distance on DRY, SAFE roadways at 55mph. Add a second for every 10 mph increase. Its a law, and cops can issue citations (if they so desire like this retarded snow law) and do when quotas require. If people kept safe following distances, the ice would hit the ground and people would miss it. Just like if you get scalding hot coffee and put it between your legs and burn your ****, you should have known better! (and not been allowed to sue!)

Oh well, just my rant. Yes, people should try to clean snow off their cars, but at the same time, I don't think we should punish truck driver's and truck companies that are already being ****** up the *** by insurance and ultra-high fuel prices thanks to Georgie B and his crusade for something that they can't help.

This has been shallow thoughts with B-Kerr! Join us for our next episode...

I don't know about everybody else, but I was talking about major piles of snow on sedans and SUV's... it's not that hard to spend 30 seconds brushing that off.

Did you ever see snow turned into ice from top of t-trailer hit car windshield on another side of the road on 6 line highway? I saw. If truck traveling at the speed ~ 55-60 MPH and car going opposite direction with same speed, it's about 120 MPH. You can imagine impact on that car windshield. So tell children whose parents got into that car accident that it's a stupid law to clean the top of the car/truck from snow. By law before driver can move his car/truck he must check his vehicle if it is in safe condition. Just look at the Tractor Trailer driver manual. I did, I have a CDL.

A ladder is not to big and can easiy be stored in the trailer of a truck.

Like Serge said ice falling off a truck into oncoming traffic, is most deadly. No matter what your following distance is to the car in front of you...cause well it doenst matter! your not even going the same direction as the truck!

And we have had plenty of snow since 96, in 2000 we had a a few snow storms, one the dumped 16 inches..

This is a good law, especially for those lazy bastards who dont clean their cars off...I mean come on a car!

That exactly happened to my dad's car while I was a passenger. Some ice flew off an SUV 3 lanes away and hit the front windshield. It scared the begezzus out of me. The windshield broke right in front of me. Scary stuff.

Default I'll take another round.... :)

I agree totally about the car thing... no excuse... BUT...

The truck trailer, though probably a huge generator of the ice, just isn't a feasability in today's market. Just my observations:

14' ladder... store where? Inside, lets see you do that hauling high cube. Under truck.... in the snow, salt, and ice? In a custom $2000 toolbox. Plus, want to risk your butt climbing a 14' ladder that planted on ice on the ground? I doublt it. What about how do you get the ice off in the first place? A torch? A pick and shovel?

Who is going to pay for the ladder, boxes, downtime, torches, shovels, hospital bills when the driver falls off the ladder, etc ? The trucking industry is going to the underworld in a handbasket and this is just more crap that is speeding it up. What about powerline and tree ice... maybe NJ should fine the trees! What about deer jumping in the road? These are just road hazards, and pretty much acts of nature. What about windows foggin up when you come into a valley due to temp changes. What if I was in my minivan (like I have one), I can't see and crash into someone. Act of nature. Should I get a ticket for road hazard.

Yes, I am going too far, I know, but I just want to make a point. I totally agree, this is a hazard. Yes in a perfect world, it would be nice to take care of this, but we would also just transport from place to place in a beam of light too (in a perfect world) and the whole point would be moot. But we aren't there. When the transportation industry can afford to stay in business and make, and the government tickets motorist for cutting in front of big trucks, sitting in blind spots, drafting where they can't be seen, etc., then I am all for requireing de-ice stations at all rest areas!

Of course, when this all happens, the cost of living will increase 25% because consumer goods will also rise 10-15% because every item we touch is carried by a truck.

Yes, I continue to rant, but when you try and run a trucking company legally, and the law practically forces you to lie to stay in business, you get really fed up. Among many other things, my family has ran two trucking companies for almost 16 years now, and I have been an engineer in the transportation sector for almost 10 years, and I have seen it all. You probably don't know, but our industry incurred BILLIONS in cost in 1997 to have rear underride guards revamped because a government report stated that 5000 people a year are dying by runnin under trucks. Guess what, on accident reports, if a car was not struck by the front bumper of the truck, it was a rear collision. Under 50 people actually die every year from hitting the rear bumper of a truck/trailer and all but about 5 of them are drunk and deserve to be dead, but we pay BILLIONS for their lives. The new red and white retro-reflective striping on trailers is there too because idiots can't see a 45'-53' long trailer!! (this cost a company roughly $150 per trailer + maintenance; there are millions of trailers on the road BTW).

The government will let any idiot own and drive a truck, most with no business skills that cut freight rates. They cause everyone to get paid less, but then they can't survive and go out of business. All that was accomplished was that the good companies are getting paid less money. And they have to buy ladders, and torches you know. Did I mention that insurance companies don't want you to leave the ground and will increase your insurance rates and/or drop your coverage if you tarp loads and/or get on top of a flatbed trailer load. Imagine what they would say if it were suggested that their covered employees climb up on an unsupported ladder 14' up in the air on ice...

Sorry for the rant, but it struck dear to my heart. And yes, FEROPONT, I am sure that ice impacts strick dear to the hearts of the little kids whose mom wrecked their minivans.... but we all have to cope.......

There are lighted signs up on the highways. I took pix. I'll post them later.

It's a good thing this is being enforced now. Maybe America will stop being so lazy.

B-kerr, ok. we get it. it's not cheap or easy to clean off trailers. you're mad at the gov't. fine. it's sad to see that you seem to have no concern for finding a solution at all.

the fact remains that it is irresponsible. plain and simple.

i think what most people are concerned about are the excursion in front of me with snow and ice flying off the 14" pile on top. the guy in the sedan with 6" of snow covering his rear window...or the guy with snow covering his headlights. geez.

it's a shame our rail system is in such a ish-hole. moving more freight by rail would solve a lot of prblems.

Yeah, this tread started mostly because lazy (clueless) bastards who drive SUV's, vans or cars have no respect for other users of the road and can't spend 5-15 min wile their car engine warming up and take a snow from their cars so not to endanger them self and other people. And I believe it should be enforced.
We all know that driving truck for living is very dangerous and difficult job. And since our rail system prolly on the development level of Zimbabwe and we rely heavily on trucks to deliver freight all over the country. I think if we had a better rail system the price of goods will be lower. But hey, we all want to have bread with butter on out table.

no one said anything negative about KY, so do not call NJ stupid. This is infact one of the better laws they are enforcing, especially if you are like me and have been involved in this type of accident. My friend got hit and swerved and hit tree, so its about time something like this is put to action.

Default NJ vs. KY

I agree w/ everyone on the snow... driver's are lazy, but I didn't want people to curse the truckers like they are the bad guys... they have enough problems.

Midnight... as for New Jersey... Hey, I lived in Reading, PA for many years, and I can say what I want because I've been there too many times! Good place to die (or get killed after dark ). BTW, Kentucky sucks too! Just no vehicle inspections -- That Rocks! Did I mention that I lived in Flint Michigan too... talk about a dive; and Pontiac.. Michigan is a winner all the way around (pot holes the size of Yugos)! At least Jersey and Kentucky don't have Trooper's with the attitude of Ohio!

I agree, put those APC wings on and lets rock!! BLing! BLing!
