For the most part, at least, and probably true. Not guaranteed though. I have been at a training event or two where we had corrected them on a couple things. Not saying this go around isn't perfect though.

yeah... just like how the STI has always had it's horsepower rating based on 93 octane Subaru swept that under the rug too. I guess Porsche swept the 911 Turbo's rating 93 octane rating under the rug as well. Let's not forget about the GT-R. Need I go on?

I fully agree with you and those who live in Colorado and the rest of the western states, should already be aware of that; but if what EP105 said is true about the towing at higher altitudes with lower octane then I find that the problem lies with the inabilities of the Forester.

Here's my opinion on why Subaru is doing this.
1) "Premuim Unleaded Only" keeps people away from these cars because they look at the $.20-$.40 per gal increase over regular and go "noooooooooope." 2) Almost all cars labeled as "Premuim Unleaded Only" can run on lower octane, with decreased performance or possible damage to the engine. Subaru has been no different. However... 3) Subaru is one of the 1st to use it as a marketing point to get those that want the car, but don't want to pay for Premium Unleaded, to buy it... gaining more buyers and customers. The question is, at what point will the deminishing returns start occuring where average driver puts in 87, packs their car and 1500lb trailer for moving cross country, and goes over the rockies? While Subaru has a disclaimer about higher altitudes and towing, they advise not to do so. However, average driver won't even consider the warning "because I've always had 87 in the car and it's been fine". I think it's a mistake for Subaru to say "Go ahead, nothing will happen" and then say "unless you tow and higher elevations" in the next breath. They should stick with "Premium Unleaded Only" and just stay there. Dark roads lie ahead for Turbo Foresters and Subarus reputation for trustworthiness when these engines all of a sudden start blowing up (ignored knocking from low octane in higher elevations/loaded). --kC |

I'd be curious to know how many people would fit into the category of: 2014 Subaru Forester XT owner that tows with it, only fills it up with 87 Octane AND lives in a higher altitude.
It just seems like too many boxes to check. Most people, if you tell them, "The BEST thing to do for your new car is to do this," will do it. I still have friends that change their oil after 500 miles because that's what they're told to do (or not to rev past 4k RPMS, which I don't agree with either method). Very few people will be told that 93 Octane is BEST, but then they'll opt for 87 Octane. If that's all that's available in their area, sure, but then if that's all that's available, then they might have to pass on the Forester XT specifically. |

performance for vehicles with EcoBoost." If anything Subaru is being cautious... especially since this is its first turbo DI engine. |

Is having two balls really that big of a deal compared to having one since they both do the same thing anyways? You tell me because I honestly don't know. But you know, it's like that whole EPA thing where people get pissy when they don't get 47 MPG on the city, highway, and combined like, say, a certain duo from a certain American car manufacturer. |

How's about water injection? 87 octane + water injection would likely fool the ecu into behaving like its running on premium... probably wouldnt even need to tune for it.

Pathetic? They have an engine that they designed to be optimal running 93 octane giving 250hp and that is what they recommend. What other manufacturer advertises multiple specs for one engine when they don't recommend using lower octane? They are not going to advertise "Yes, you can put a lower octane gas in but you will lose HP/performance". I have taken trips all over these United States RARELY come across anything less than 93; so, this "trying to sweep it under the rug" comment just doesn't fit. |

I don't get it, probably another one of their vague life with a Subaru themed video.
On a side note, yea try blasting through a muddy ditch like that filled with rocks, my paint got damaged because I wasn't more careful when I was driving recently. Gotta Subaru's paint. |

Out of the blue here; but I paused the video when he turned on the car and I like the fact the Forester gets the low windshield washer fluid indicator.
