You do realize the new Forester is just about as big inside now? The base model(at least) has more total cargo space than a Tribeca. From the posts I've read from the people who have sat in ione, I would think that it is on par with an Outback. Just not as "nice".

No it isn't, the Subaru Leone RX Turbo was the first production turbocharged Subaru, and never featured a hood scoop.

The hood scoop tradition started with the Subaru XT/Alcyone/Vortex and the turbocharged EA82.

I never considered that, thanks.

When SOA refers to upping the cooling system of the XV, it could mean the transmission. The rear axle ratios for a capable towing vehicle would more than likely be different too. Brakes more than likely are better too. Because I'm no mechanic, I couldn't tell you if you would have to change out the radiator to add a transmission cooler, but it shouldn't be assumed the vehicles are the same because one part, in this case the radiator, is the same.

Interestingly enough this seems to be an issue across all manufactures selling cars in the U.S., which further makes one wonder if there isn't another regional reason for keeping the numbers lower. That, and as noted above, when European towing numbers are being thrown around they are often what the vehicle is rated for with a trailer equipped with power brakes. I also read somewhere that the way the hitch is attached to the vehicle in Europe is different from the U.S. and adds to the stability of the ride.

I just think there's much more to this than just looking at the size of the radiator.
Now this just makes me curious if the XV comes standard with a heavy-duty transmission cooler...

Makes the Tribeca seem pointless.

So, that answers that debate. Now we just need to find out the Forester thing. That will be much harder since SOA doesn't care to compare USDM and the rest of the world.
Thanks for posting this, it's a big help!

Does anyone know when we'll be able to build our own on the Subaru website?

Today Subaru Australia added some technical details about its version of the new Forester XT at http://subaru.com.au/news/forester-o...-xt%E2%80%99sy.

One significant difference in specs between the new Oz Forester XT and North America's version is rated towing capacity. According to the release cited above:
Quote:
The car's impressive towing credentials are enhanced through features including Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) now including Towing Stability Control.

Braked towing capacity increases by 200 kilograms, to 1800 kg. Forester 2.0 XT also has an air-cooled oil cooler, for enhanced towing ability.
So, all we have to do in the US to get a safe 3968 lb. towing capacity with the new XT is add the Aussie air-cooled oil cooler? How hard could that be?

It's much cheaper to have factory workers to install packages than it is for a la carte stuff like BMW/MINI does.

The fewer total trim levels available, the cheaper still.. and the easier to keep your quality control inspections consistent... which means higher ratings from JD Power, Consumer Reports, etc.

Next time you're looking at those initial quality surveys.. you'll notice that cars that come with a few simple packages top the list and those with tons of options (like MINIs) fall near the bottom.

Just imagine that you're the inspector that's going to make sure the car was built correctly to specifications before it leaves the factory.. would you be more efficient if the car had 20 possible configurations or 20,000?

MY2008. The Premium package '08 WRX had the AWP and the aero package. The only difference between an '08 WRX Premium from an '09 was the color of the paint on the wheels, the standard tires, the shocks and springs and the turbo/downpipe combo.

I have a loaded 2010 Outback Limited, and I think the new Forester is as nice, if not nicer, than the Outback. I am "downgrading" to the new Forester and not looking back.

At the Philly Auto Show, I had a conversation with the rep where I said that I think the Forester will hugely cannibalize the Outback much more so than the expected cannibalizatin of the Forester by the Crosstrek. Especially considering the 2.5i Forester now has the IDENTICAL powertrain to the 2013 Outback and nearly the same cargo and passenger space, with the Forester just being shorter but taller.

The rep disagreed, noting that the Forester will be marketed for -- and appeal to -- those looking for a "true" SUV where the Outback appeals more to the wagon/crossover group.

Despite X-drive and a high roof, we all know that the Forester is just as much as crossover as the Outback, for less money!

You can't really cut into the Outback's market with anything that isn't an Outback.. you've got to remember the whole Outback thing started from people who weren't interested in a nicer riding and handling Legacy Wagon.. but once Paul Hogan told them that they could have an SUV that could handle the dangerous Australian Outback like no other.. it was a sales success. The 1996 Outback had two tone paint, some stiffer, taller springs, different looking wheels and a bulge on the roof. In daily driving they were no more useful or capable than a Legacy wagon, but were much more expensive.

Until a macho guy gets on TV and tells the average consumer that the Forester is the toughest little 'ute' you can buy and has just as much room as the amazing Outback it will not canibalize Outback sales.

On second thought... they could just name it the Forester Outback.

I don't know the exact date, but typically (thinking back to the 2010 Outback, 2012 Impreza, and 2013 Crosstrek intros) Subaru doesn't put the new model on their main homepage and allow "Build Your Own" until it is already on dealer lots and the old model is nearly sold out.

My guess is that you'll see it some time in early March. I hope I'm wrong, though.

The good news is that, supposedly, the sold order system opens up tomorrow, which means that you will be able to order one from the factory, implying that all of the details about options, accessories, and pricing will pour out tomorrow to dealers.

No coincidence that this is the same day as the lift of the press embargo. I think tomorrow will be a big day for those of us starved for 2014 Forester details in the U.S.!

Joe Spitz fails me again. I knew about the exterior parts, but I've cared so little about the WRX up until I bought mine in 2011 that I'm slowly catching up on the interior details of past model years. And since my disappointment with my own WRX, I'm even less eager to learn about the minor details. Thanks for the correction.

STI or bust!

Quote:
New on the 2009 WRX
New,more power! 265horsepower@6000rpm and 244 ft torque @4000rpm. Note 2.5GT still has 224hp@5200rpm, 226torque@2800rpm.
New larger turbo with more boost (na 2.5GT)
New easier flowing catalytic converter, (na 2.5GT)
New revised suspension with larger stabilizer bars (na 2.5GT)
New revised suspension with stiffer springs (na 2.5GT)
New lower profile 17" Dunlop SP Sport 1 Summer Performance Tires with new gray alloys (except 2.5GT). You may want to buy All Season tires.
Summer tire and what it means tires designed for warmer temperatures and high stress use, with large tread blocks not good in inclement weather. The rubber does not maintain elasticity in cold weather, so the grip is less even on dry pavement. In the cold a summer tire becomes unpredictable and feels slippery when cornering no matter what the weather. This problem is compounded in wet or snowy conditions.

New on the 2009 WRX, con't
New WRX gets Aero Package (was std on 08 Premiums) including front and rear underspoilers and side ground effects, rear spoiler (sedan), rear diffuser (wagon),

I meant failed me because I was looking in the general WRX/STI page and only saw 2009 features (for AWP) mentioned, not 2008, but WAS surprised when I didn't see 2008. Then I stopped caring.

It's still fail on my part, but I just felt like blaming Joe Spitz.

Heh heh, nope, but I've bought a few Subies from him and sent a few referrals his way as well... and we've ALL ended up with AMAZING deals. I just have a lot of respect for a no-nonsense, no-pressure and extremely knowledgeable salesperson who can also give me a killer deal... it's a rarity. (And I hope SOA appreciates what an amazing resource his site is for people who may be interested in a Subaru. An informed consumer who buys your product is more likely to be a satisfied consumer and therefore a repeat customer, IMHO.)

Back to 2014 Forester... time for those driving impression embargoes to be broken already! Those teasing tidbits so far have been very promising.

They are not posted in the normal spot yet, but since the sold order system opened up today, I can see the prices(most all of them anyway). 2 things caught my eye. A hood protector applique and exterior auto dimming mirrors. Neither of which can be added at this time. The mirrors are also showing to be part of a package only that costs $567 or $641.

And I did hit the reply button too fact because when you said "options", to us, that means factory. Accessories are "port".
