At the Philly Auto Show, I had a conversation with the rep where I said that I think the Forester will hugely cannibalize the Outback much more so than the expected cannibalizatin of the Forester by the Crosstrek. Especially considering the 2.5i Forester now has the IDENTICAL powertrain to the 2013 Outback and nearly the same cargo and passenger space, with the Forester just being shorter but taller.

The rep disagreed, noting that the Forester will be marketed for -- and appeal to -- those looking for a "true" SUV where the Outback appeals more to the wagon/crossover group.

Despite X-drive and a high roof, we all know that the Forester is just as much as crossover as the Outback, for less money!
People can think what they want, especially salesmen. It doesn't change the fact that consumers don't always see things the same way the people selling the cars do. Some people still think the Forester is a "wagon" and some still think it is a "truck". The Forester has been cross shopped with the Outback before for quite some time. I'm pretty sure the new features on the Forester this year will pull some Outback sales away until the refresh.

I believe it was the 1st generation Legacy, with the first turbocharged EJ engine in the Legacy RS (and other international markets). I don't think any EA engines came from the factory with any intercooler.

The 1st generation Legacy RS had DOHC and a air-to-water intercooler, unlike today's Subaru vehicles with air-to-air intercoolers...

But North America got screwed over and got a SOHC EJ22 engine without any kind of intercooler (though that same engine block is known to be one of the strongest EJ blocks thanks to its fully-closed deck design).

Where are the white LEDs that go in the front bumper? I thought those were an option for the XT?

And I did hit the reply button too fact because when you said "options", to us, that means factory. Accessories are "port".
Thanks, and sorry, I was being a little cheeky. I also totally overlooked the fact that the sold order system opened today. I looked at my calendar wrong and thought it was tomorrow.

Very happy to see the PIO's finally, but pretty bummed how many of the things I want are late availability!

Also didn't realize the cargo cover was an option. Thought that was standard, at least on the higher trims. Looks like a hidden $182 price increase!

It hasn't been standard in a while. No hidden cost there.

I'm wondering if they are standard on the XT? I would assume they were factory installed, maybe they are a dealer install but then so is the ambient lighting kit and it is listed?? I'm glad you get a choice of blue or red on that ambient light kit, I hate the blue one on my Legacy GT when every other light is red. I can finally have matching ambient light and cupholders now!

It was standard on my limited impreza

Are the options that show as $0 mean they are standard on that trim?

And what is an exterior auto-dimming mirror? Also, I thought fog lights were standard on the touring.

Is it possible for JustyWRC to confirm whether or not we can order an XT and add just heated seats?

Yeah, I was mixing it up being standard on the Impreza and Outback. Bummer. On the other hand, with dark tinted windows, there's enough privacy back there that I may forego the $182 option.

As far as the $0 items on the price list, my interpretation is that if it's standard or not available for that trim, it doesn't appear on the list at all. (Notice the only cargo cover listed is for the power hatch, and that there are no upgraded speakers listed for the XT Touring.) Rather, I think the $0 means late availability -- I.E., it cannot be ordered yet. So things like the Rugged Package won't come in on the first shipments because the wheel arch moldings are late availability. Also, a few of the items are noted as $0 because they must be ordered in a package.

Here's a few more first drive reviews
http://www.edmunds.com/subaru/forest...road-test.html

They are all positive, but then again every review is positive these days.

Half the people who comment on those reviews aren't positive. They're bashing the CVT because they can't option the XT with a manual which they will never buy anyways because it's a CUV even if it did come with a manual on the XT trims.

Love this quote from autoblog:

Quote:
Combined with a new teardrop roofline, the scoop delete helps return a drag coefficient of just .33. The number is one of the best in the segment and marks a 10.8-percent improvement over the 2013 model, but we still miss the option of vacuuming up squirrels, birds, small children and other foolhardy varmints.
Edmunds states this:

Quote:
Subaru redesigned the fuel injection (it's solely direct, rather than a combination of direct and port injection), lowered the compression ratio a notch (10.6:1) and added a twin-scroll turbocharger, good for 17.1 psi of boost when maximum power is summoned.
Is this true? I thought it was discussed here that it was still both?

In reality, this is true. The true percentage of XT manual sales would be extremely low despite all the internet comments. There is a difference between all the internet "wants" vs actual buyers. I for one want a XT manual but that just wont come true. I'm surprised a MT is even available on the N/A trims.

You can always get a shop to install some seat heaters for you..

Re: the manual CUV argument.. Subaru sold every manual equipped Forester XT they made.. and didn't have any trouble moving them.. they just made very few of them. You can't judge the market from a conservative build number.

In hind site, sure Subaru moved all of the XT MT's, but they were not quick movers. In some markets, they sat on lots a lot longer compared to the AT and N/A models. There was a reason they only produced a limited number of FXT MTs and disappeared for the SH generation.

Knowing what I know now, I wish I picked up one of many FXT MT's on the lots back in 07.

Subaru responded to the MT wants by providing the XT with a CVT with SI Drive, and 6 and 8 gear "manual" modes.
