I start it, let it settle for 5 seconds and then go on my way. I keep it out of boost and under 3.5 till I reach operating temp for a few minutes.

Two things that the display console (for the 2013's) needs is an analog temperature display and an analog fuel guage. Having the "cold engine" / "overheating engine" / "you're engine is so hot it's burning a ****ing hole in your wallet" indicators are not enough. Having pixelated boxes representing amount of fuel is unnerving, because there's no way to know if it's a true representation of the amount of fuel left (and relative to what?). I'd rather see a needle indicate where the system's temperature is at (in a relative sense) and another needle identify how much fuel is in my tank. [/rant]
Back to the OP's question: I don't idle it for that long unless I'm waiting for someone: either I'm waiting for someone to get to my car, or someone to get out of my way (I live in an apartment building where everyone has a common parking area). Under normal circumstances, usually I will idle for no more than 20 seconds, and then go easy on the engine until the blue dummy light turns off. I just completed the specified break-in period, but I'm trying not to go over 4k rpm until I reach about 5000km on my odometer. Last edited by lymphomaniac; 11-18-2012 at 11:22 AM. yup, i do this as well. But remember, it takes about an additional 10-15mins of driving untill your oil is at operating temp....after your gauge shows that the water/antifreeze is at operating temp.

fire it up let it run for a few seconds and just take my time and drive. no need to go full boost WOT right out my driveway through my neighborhood by the time i get to the main which is maybe 2 blocks it starts to creep up. now my cammed and blown mustang whole different story i wont move that thing until after maybe a 2 min warmup

I always run it for a minute or so then I just keep the rpms low. No spirited driving till fully warm

I know a lot of guys say you dont really have to and just give it 15-30 sec. But when its 30 degrees outside and you only give your subie a few seconds, it doesn't sound happy when you start to pull out of the driveway... if its COLD I let the needle get about halfway. and I wont get on it until my oil has warmed up a bit, and for you guys without an oil temp gauge it takes a while! My drive home from work is 11 miles and if its below 30 my oil temp gauge wont move! (lowest number on gauge is 140 degrees) So its not always best to go by the water temp gauge on the dash! |

You can start it up and drive out on it easy. Best way to warm it up. Coolant reaches temp about halfway to work for me, but my oil doesn't reach temp until I'm at work. When my coolant hits temp the oil temp needle hasn't even budged off the 100F mark which is as low as it reads. Keep that in mind if you don't have an oil temp gauge.

I start it, scrape the windows, plug the iPod in, get situated, and then set off. So at most it's idling for maybe 2 minutes. If I don't need to scrape the windows I start it and leave. As everyone else has said easy driving all the way to work or where ever I'm going. You're car isn't truly warmed up anyways while sitting idling. Sure the engine components are but your tranny, diffs, any bearings in the suspension, and stuff like that is still cold. My motorcycle is the only thing I let warm up to close to operating temp before using. But the engine oil is also the transmission fluid so it does shift smoother after idling.

agreed with both above statements. if i let my car idle it takes so much longer to warm up. if i just go and drive it down the road and go about my business it gets hot much quicker. now if its like 10 degrees with ice on all windows ill let it warm up just to clear the windows so i can drive. these newer cars its unecessary unless you want the heat to be blasting when you drive off which is fine

I always warm up my car, winter or 90* summer days. I also have the infamous cold start piston slap, which is why.
Usually 10 minutes will get the needle to operating temp, but I don't usually wait 10 full minutes. Usually I wait until the needle is halfway between the operating temp and fully cold to drive. Then I drive like a grandma until its fully warmed up. |

With the STi - summers I pretty much start driving immediately. (Give it 10-15 seconds just to wake up a bit), but baby it a bit until the temp needle goes up to normal operating temp. (I generally drive like a grandma, so this isn't very hard for me).
Winter: The car is angry until warm. It feels 'different' until it's ready.. I give it a couple minutes before I drive, then baby it until the needle has settled at the normal temp. This is for _cold_ temps. So yeah, don't floor it right after starting it, and give the oil time to warm up like basically everyone else has said . |

I have a 06'. Is my car somewhat pre-wired for a block heater? I have never looked into this. If it was 30* outside and I plugged it in, how long would it take to get hot? (the block/block heater)

My '02 has one. I've never timed it, but I leave it on for a couple hours. I bought one of the timers for my outlet. It turns on at 5 am, and I leave for work at 7 am. Works like a charm.

buy a timer that plugs into the outlet, plug heater into that. Set it to turn on 2-3 hours before you leave in the am. I did this with my diesel only because it takes a while for the engine to heat up 8 gallons of coolant, and I hated the drive without heat.

I usually let it idle for about 1 to 5 minutes depending on how cold it is outside and keep the rpms below 3K until the temp guage movies up to about a quarter.

I let it run for about 10 minutes if it's really cold out. Not for the sake of the car, but because I don't like to scrape off my windows or freeze on my way to work.
