Attn: 2nd Gen Legacy owners. Are there any that haven't blown head gasket?
I wanted to start a list of people that have blown head gaskets.
If you dont mind post your info like this. MY-97 Miles-66,904 Trans- 5-speed Age-5 years Name-HIHO Comments: I haven't blown one yet but figure it is coming. I have the extended warranty so I am not real worried about it. I would like to see if they are going at a pretty consistant basis. Thanks for the time.

Good topic. I would like to have this info so I can decide on buying the warranty. I think that auto or manual may be relevent info. I suspect that the manuals have more trouble due to more time spent at higher rpms. (I know that I rev the crap out of the Impreza)

Miles-34,000 (55,000km) Trans-5 Speed manual Age-no problems with head gasket Name-self evident I've been running synthetic since the 1500km service, usually Penzoil or Castrol Syntec, but I also used a case of Agip once. ...but, what's all this talk about head gaskets/No. 4 cylinder being prone to failure? Is this just an i-Club rumour, or are there statistics to back up this claim? BTW, I have a small oil consumption issue, nothing serious but I found it strange that a new car needs topping up with half a liter (quart) at least monthly. Also, I regularly make use of the full rev range and have spent extended time in the 5-6500rpm territory on TSD rallies and at a rallycross. Bill |

Miles-48,000 Trans-5 Speed manual Age-no problems with head gasket yet Name-Jonathan I beleive head gaskets fail all the time on MY97's although maybe its because those models have more milage than the newer ones. Subigal's 99 Legacy failed in a BIG way (replaced the entire short block iirc), although I suspect she maybe pushed that thing a little hard at times. |

I came to the i-club about 2 months after my short block was replaced. I got currious and did a search. There were numerous people who had engine replacements due to a crack in the cylinder wall. It seems the majority of them were cracks in the #4 cyl. I'm almost certain Jamie's was. But anyhoo, I think all of that stuff died when they dumped the archives. (? maybe ?) I did a search and I couldn't find anything.

Miles-53k 5MT Name- richeich No problems at all. I had the alternator recall done, but it hadn't failed yet. I'm curious about the problems as well. I used to have an SVX, and still pop in over on their club to keep in touch. Somebody asked about older Legacys, and a couple of people jumped in there and told him the 2.5 DOHC was the biggest crap engine Subaru had ever made. I mean, absolute junk! Anyway, I jumped on there and politely asked to be educated as to why they would say that, and never really got a genuine response. I understand the SOHC is an improvement, but I didn't realize we had such terrible engines. Here's a link to the thread, just for anybody that's interested. http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/show...ghlight=legacy Nobody needs to go over there and start anything, just check it out for grins, if you want. 75k miles manual No head gasket yet I've gotten the CEL a couple of times and fixed by using BG 44K fuel injector cleaner ($20 and well worth it), since the problem seems to be from a poorly designed fuel injector (maybe soemthing with the flow) which seems to cause the cylinder #4 to "act up" leading finally to blown headgasket. That's what I seem to gather from some mechanics around here. I really don't know the full details, otherwise I'd go into them. All I can say is keep those fuel injectors clean. Maybe get new ones. Other problem I have is that there's a pretty bad oil leak right by my tranny. Anyone know of a silent recall regarding this? |

2.5 GT 5 MT At approx. 78,000 miles, the engine went all to hell, including cracked block, blown headgasket, etc... I'm the third owner; the previous owner did lots of work on the car- and wasted all his money then sold it to me I'm guessing the first owner didn't do much by way of nice treatment or maintenance. -Brian |

richeich- That was pretty funny. "I heard it was crap so it must be". I think that any engine can have major problems, it just depends on how you drive it and how well you maintain it. Someone like Patrick Olsen has seen alot of headgaskets blow but he also DRIVES his car. I don't know if there are any real problems; time will tell. So far it seems that most people are having good luck with the SOHC. I love it and have had no problems in the 10k miles I have owned it. And yes I hit the red on a regular basis. I hope I can say the same after a season of auto-x.
Keep them coming, this is good stuff. |

It's funny this topic just started up the other day.......
I went out for a quick drive after doing the grounding mod and installing a temp gauge (read: indoor/outdoor thermometer) on my intake, and (***HOPEFULLY***) my thermostat stuck closed. The car was fine for the first part of the drive, then I was doing a little slow driving and the temp gauge started to rise. I pulled over and let the fans run. In the meantime I noticed that the coolant in the overflow had hardly moved and the upper and lower radiator hoses were very cool to the touch. I let the car cool and then headed for my house, which is only ~2 miles away. It started heating up again, so I pulled over and let it cool. When I started for the final leg home I stopped at a four-way stop and the temp gauge went up a touch then dropped to it's normal middle of the road resting place. I let it idle for 5 minutes or so when I go home and it seemed fine. I just had my coolant 'exchanged' (where they use the machine and pressure flush it) Saturday. My hopes are I only had a stuck thermostat due to some trash that was flushed from the cooling system. Anyhoo, just had to tell someone, glad you guys are here! Guess I'll be heading up to the dealership tomorrow to get a new thermostat and then I'll have to drain out all my nice new coolant. |

Sorry to highjack the thread, but
the same thing happened to me at the rallyX 2 weekends ago. I'd be driving and after the course, the temp would shoot way up, had to drive with the heat blasting for 1/2 mile and it was fine. Something to do with the T-stat which should only take 15 min to replace. |

I admit, the head gasket thing worries me a little. I seem to recall Patrick Olsen saying that he didn't get any indication on the temp gauge that anything was wrong. It doesn't do us any good if it doesn't indicate anything. It would be interesting to put an aftermarket temp gauge in somewhere to monitor it.
On another note, I was down at the Subie dealership last year, and they had a Silver 97 GT in the garage, from Missouri (I'm in Tulsa, OK). Apparently these folks were on a road trip, and the thing overheated on the turnpike, about 70 miles out of town. It overheated and died, they waited for a tow truck, and had it towed into Tulsa. The mechanic said when they unloaded it, the engine still had some heat in it. Totally cooked. At the time, I couldn't figure out how someone could let that happen, without noticing it quicker. But if the gauge doesn't show it, then by the time it sputters and dies, it's too late. |

A REAL tempature gauge has been on my list for some time. Probably the biggest hold-back has been the lack of gauge pods for the Legacy. I guess I am going to go ahead and order a gauge and one of the little 'bucket' pods that Autometer makes. I am sick and tired of this idiot light with a needle!
