Blown RS Now with matching blown head gasket.
105 thousand miles about half with the blower. I am going the o-rings and anealed (sp?)gaskets route. It's an old English bike trick.New clutch and pressure plate. maybe unrestrict the exhaust?
Was it worth it? *#%+ yeah. In a New York minute! |

Sweet, is that an Eaton blower? And is that the kit you had to put the bump in the hood to fit it?
How many lbs. of boost were you running and how were the 1/4 times? Sorry for all the questions, but I never heard about the performance of these older style kits. |

Yes Eaton M62. Yes carbon fiber blister. Sorry no 1/4 et's but If you shift crisply' about 6 sec 0-60. It was argued roughly 210 horses and 190 lbs of torque. I was going for torque.
Poor thing, From wot, it pressurizes the cooling system and blows it all out the overflow bottle's overflow. This all takes place just before the needle budges. oh well 3 to 8 weeks and no vacation $. |

Flywheel. Not many awd dynos around. I believe the count is one. And I saw an article about a rwd RS specifically designed to test mods on a dyno. Plus they stated you could do some killer stonkers with it. (Burnouts)...

This raises a few questions. What other internal & gasket upgrades should we consider for long-term reliability? I wonder if anybody makes a copper headgasket for the RS? -Red |

If you believe the advertising copper gaskets from Mr. Gasket or whatever are supposed to crush and be extremely strong. I don't know if anyone on the board has any experience with those. There must be other options as well.

At those moderate power levels? None. Just guard against detonation. Ping will cause the early demise of any type of head gasket, piston, valve, etc,. A more telling question to ask is what kind of ignition/fuel control was used for all those miles. shiv |

I had one of these Rimmer kits on MY98. It got so hot, even with the water injection, it destroyed my engine. I dont mean to badmouth Rimmer, He was very professional to deal with. Their kit was expensive $4795 installed. CTC Motorsports carries copper gaskets for Imprezas I think.

ok just to see how good i am you have a 98 correct?/? well you didn't loose your head gasket there was a series of 98 blocks that had a new amazing technology callled moving cylinder walls thats right thats what is happening subaru usually replaces them under warranty but get that blower off... colman chan from canada had that happen to him also without boost..... bad news is you need a new short block...

sad news is my engine is being torn apart as we speak... yep!! I am the next victim... 53K miles N/A - auto - 99Legacy GT - and it's either a crack in the head... or the head gasket... dunno yet... good thing is warranty should cover it... nice to see a REAL thread on this board again.. j. |

it looks as if you do not have a Bell Fuel Pressure Regulator with that. I have the same kit and Rimmer sent me (for free) the Bell FPR shortly after EdDecker had internal engine damage caused by lots of detonation. I wonder/hold my breath that my engine internals are holding up. 15K and 1 year everything is still together.
JC, what exactly do you mean by high temps? how were you measuring? what failed in the engine? please be more specific, I obviously have an interest in what went wrong with your car. thanks.. |

Kevin from JCSports here. My MY98 had the following damage: warped block, cracked heads. I was able to take the supercharger kit off and return everything to stock before taking it back to the dealership for a warranty long block. I am aware that there was a problem with the #4 piston "walking" in the cylinder but that was not the reason for failure. I put a temp probe on the outside of my intake manifold after a normal 5 minute drive and it read 490 degrees! That is what caused the damage.

This is all very scary for someone wanting to boost his engine. It does make the TEC-II look like a good investment though. Preventitive medicine. Stop the heat and detonation before it starts. Apparently it can be cronicly fatal as well as acute.
Of course the next question (for me) is, how much power is safe before we blow the stock drivetrain? Shiv, I believe you have some experience with this. Has anyone with a Rimmer kit done damage to their gearbox? SubieGal, Sorry to hear about the engine trouble. I'd be interested in hearing what happened. I'm planning to do a little rallycrossing and I'm curious if it had anything to do with it. Later, -Red |

Heh... I've already had my head gaskets replaced and have had my entire engine replaced. Dale at Teague's Auto sourced me an excellent replacement engine winthin a few hours.... '98 DOHC with 0 road miles (it was used for some sort of bench testing) for a helluva lot less money than Subaru wanted for a complete assembly.

I seriously doubt rally crossing had ANYTHING to do with it...
has to be a defect somewhere... rally cross... top speeds = MAYBE 40mph! no way that's the issue... still waiting to hear... will know more soon. |

Only 53K miles? The_extreme said he blew his engine at 30K. I thought these Subies were tougher than that.

Can those of you with the blown engines describe what the symptoms are?
I've got a MY98 RS and am worried about my engine. My car eats oil terribly, and I've been checking for oil leaks. None what-so-ever! I changed the oil at 34000mi and I check it every time I fill my gastank up (once per week). I'm almost at 37000mi and have had to add a total of 3 quarts since the oil change. Anyone know what burning off that much oil could be attributed to? I drive my car pretty hard and shift mostly high in the rev range, but I doubt that explains that much oil missing from my engine. Any suggestions? I am a sponge... -Kagan |

hmmm...
my car.. NEVER missed an oil change or a preventitive maintenance... last oil change it was about a quart down i didn't think much of it... til now... and the car overheated ONCE... one time... i took it in to have it "looked at" as i baby the car... and was sure the thermostat was still good... well... hydracarbons in my coolant... hmmm... now i know where my oil went!! hydracarbon count is at 500... engine is in bits... STILL don't know yet... |

My car's a sick little puppy too.
#3 cylinder gave me trouble again. I went WOT and I heard the detting but, stupid me, I didn't let up. The ECU throws the proverbial '#3 misfire' CE code again. It turns out the spark plug's cathode (ground electrode) impacted against the anode, leaving a gap less than a hair's width. The plug's replaced and the car seems to run fine now – but WTF happened?! Could a piece of the piston crown break off, and interfere before blowing out the exhaust? [Compression in #3 is 180, the rest 205]. Also, my Eaton M62 blower sounds like it's ready to self-destruct – and I've only clocked 20k miles on it. I've got it by-passed now (it free-spins on its own) so it's a lot quieter. I'll have to drive to Trey's Cobb Tuning this way. Magnuson, who deal with Eaton's aftermarket division, say they may replace it under warranty, but they need to see it first. These blowers are supposed to last more than 100K miles. They've got Eaton M62 blowers, being rebuilt, with over 200K miles clocked on them. I hoping Trey will solve all my problems, and make the car even better! Ed |
