Thumbs down I accidentally tore a check in half...is it still useable?

I got a check from a customer today...a long overdue, fairly large check that I have been waiting for quite some time. When I opened the envelope, I tried pulling it out, but it seemed to be stuck, and I ended up ripping it in half

I guess there is no hope that its still valid....is there?

I taped it back together! Does that count!?!?@K$:@$I@)$U!!!!!

That sucks . I have to laugh because something similar just happened to me. After every 2K hours I work I get a week bonus check. Anyway, I forgot to fax in my timecard that put me over the 2K hour mark. It was wednesday the following week when I sent it in. Next week comes in as usual, no bonus . Following week same thing so I call them. They say, dunno our records show we sent it. I wait an additional two weeks for it to show. Finally after waiting four weeks for it to show I call and have them cancel it and send out a new one. I get home that night to find; what else but my bonus check that they just put a stop order on . Happily the new check shows up the next day at the house ......where-upon my two year old "found" it on the table and proceeded to make pretty clouds and animals and whatever else two year olds draw. It was actually pretty funny once I got over the shock of it.

The long and the short is: it's been two weeks now since I deposited that doodlefied check with no calls from the bank. I say go see a clerk and tell them the story, you've got nothing to lose.

It's still valid.. same as dollar bills. If you have both halves, it's still valid. Just explain your story to the bank teller.

Aslong as the micr numbers are still viewable they can still accept it. They'll just put it in a pretty envelope thingy that tells their processor to hand process it. Atleast thats the way we do it here in the US.

I just did the same thing today with my payroll check, while I was in line at the bank. Bank took it no problems.

Honestly it will depend on the bank. If they know you well, they may take it. If they dont recognize you from joe schmoe, you're screwed. I used to be a teller at a bank, and if I didnt know the person, I wouldn't take a ripped check, or ripped money for that matter.

except when you have had people bringing in ripped money to try to exchange it for good money, because the ripped money is fake. Then you stop taking it. I think its up to each branches discretion.

You can also put grass in the ATM envelope, as long as you tell the machine it's money then you're good.

True, until the bank opens the next business day and they go to do the deposit, and take the money that was supposed to be in there and remove it from the account.
