Default 04 Transmission into 02 WRX

I am currently swapping out my old transmission from my bugeye, to a 04 transmission. I have complete drivelines from both cars. The question is instead of swapping out front axles. Can I just take the stub axles out of my old (02) tranny and install them into the 04 without the snap rings? I orginally looked at transplanting the snap ring from the 04 to the 02 axles, but the cut ring is alot smaller on the 02 (because it uses C-clip vs snap ring). Or do I need to go through and swap out the axles so I have the snap rings installed?

well, the 04 WRX trans is the same as the 02. they both have stubs coming out of the diff. so they are a direct cross.

I just loaded picture. Upper is the axle of 04 with no roll pin holding stub axle into assembly and uses a snap ring. The lower is the stub axle from my 02 that locks into diff with a c-clip and requires you to remove the diff to get to the c-clip.
Its hard to see in the picture but the 02 stub c-clip cut is about 2/3 size of the snap ring area for the 04.

-edit-
After looking at 04 axle it appear that the lock ring is further outboard vs the 02 axle. Just to see how it fits ect I slid the newer axle into my old 04 front diff. It slides in no problem but the lock ring doesnt go far enough in to where it pops out of the 02 diff. So now I really wonder if I need this lock ring or if I can just leave it free float.

Not sure if this matters rear diff has the lock rings in the diff, yet the front axles have the lock rings stuck on the axles.
