Default 1997 Outback Fog Light Relay

Sorry to crosspost, but it occurred to me after the fact that this forum might have more electrical experts lurking with my answer...

Would it be worth trying to use the stock relay, or would I be better off installing the hella relay that came with my kit?

Thanks in advance,

I don't know much about outbacks, but presumably you're switching the stock fogs for the hellas - do you want to keep using the stock button, or use the one from hella?
if you use the button from hella, then it would be easiest to just make it a completely seperate system, and use the better wiring and relay that comes with the hellas.
If you want to use all the stock button and relay and wiring, then all you have to do is unplug the connections at the back of the old lights, and pop in the hellas. Might have to crimp on new connectors, I dunno!

And, lastly, I'm not sure where your relay is, but in my car there's a whole block of relays including the foglight one located behind the driver's side kickpanel. So, I'd check there first, as opposed to under da hood. Unless someone who knows what they're talking about tells you differently!

ideally, I'll be using the factory switch. I'm thinking for the time being, I'm going to hook everything up using the factory wiring harness and relay, and when I decide to throw some 100w bulbs in the hellas, I'll redo the wiring from the relay down. Anyone know of a problem using the factory switch with the hella relay?

I really can't think of a reason that you'd encounter a problem. except that if you keep the relay inside the front compartment, you're going to have to run 12 gauge wire allll the way from the battery though the firewall, to the relay, and then back out again to the lights. a nuisance, and slight voltage drop over that length.

I just installed some piaa fog lights in my factory location. I used the piaa wiring harness and still used the factory switch. All I did was cut the factory fog plug and use, I believe the white wire, as the turn on lead for the piaa relay. I know in the end I'm going through 2 relays(the factory then the piaa) but I have had no problems with this setup. I also have driving lights wired up using another factory foglight switch, using a seperate wiring harness. If you use this setup, you'll have to cut three wires from the back of the fog light switch and wiring up through your hella relay. If you need I can get you a diagram of where to run those wires to the switch. Well I hope that makes sense and maybe helps.

Thanks for all the input, I ended up finishing the wiring (till I decide to upgrade the harnesses) using the factory wiring. I cut right at the plugs and used some Swenco "Posi-Lock" inline connectors to connect to the hella pigtails I have running out of the fog housings. They installed nicely, with a little shrink tubing and some electrical tape, I figure I can all but go swimming with my car and not worry about any shorts. The light output is remarkably better than factory, and the slightly larger lamp looks pretty mean in the bumper. I'll post a pic if I get a chance to in the near future and don't forget about it.
