does anyone have a diagram of a turbo that describes where is the "oil outlet hard pipe" and the "oil return hard pipe"? I'm kinda confused on what's what in terms of those hard pipes that are sticking out on my vf39 I'm going to install into my 03 wrx.

Also, in what step would the uppipe install come into play? Would it be where you removed the 3 14mm bolts that hold turbo on uppipe flange?

How many gaskets are there for the turbo install? I want to make sure I get all new gaskets. There is one that connects the dp to the turbo and one that connects the uppipe to the turbo.

That's 2 total.

Are there any others I need?

You probably won't need new gaskets during turbo install. Majority of people reuse stock gaskets without much problem. Mine had over 60k miles and was still in excellent condition.

Thanks for the advice...but I don't mind spending the extra money. So are there a total of 2 gaskets needed?

Yes, there are two gaskets. Good luck with the install.

What's the best way to plug up the coolant lines on the turbo?

just unplug them and put them vertical as fast as you can to avoid spilling the most coolant. We never figured out a good way to do this as cleanly as possible. at least thats my exp. in 5 turbo installs. just put more coolant back in and burp it via radiator hose (edit: when done installing everything)

^^correct me if i've been doing this wrong the whole time.

Should I disconnect the top coolant line on the turbo first and then the bottom coolant line? Won't there still be coolant inside the turbo that will leak out of the hardlines or do I just worry about the soft hoses?

Yes coolant will still leak out of the turbo. You will not be able to do it cleanly. It doesn't really matter though. You just refill as needed.

The oil return line is the one directly on the bottom of the turbo pointing down. If you are replacing this, you will need an additional gasket.

I have the oil return line gasket already. Do I have to worry about losing oil when changing out the turbo?

I want as clean as an install as possible. I was thinking about just shoving a lot of towels towards the base fo the turbo.

The turbo will be empty of oil. It drains out when the car is not running.

just put newspaper and some towels under the general area of the turbo/coolant and it'll catch most of it. it sucks but its messy

i.e. on the floor etc, there is no way to get around it really

I'm planning to do fuel pump, injectors, and turbo all at once with my brother. If I leave the car sitting for a couple of days, will the fuel depressurize enough so that it won't spray all over the place? He's gonna be doing the fuel pump while I work on the turbo and injectors.

There is a proper way to depressurize the system by pulling a plug by glove box. However, I never had problem of fuel spraying all over the place...

yes. I didnt depressurize. Parked the car, let it cool for about 45 minutes while I set up my work space, and then started with the exhaust, then the turbo. After those were complete I started on the GBODs and finally the injectors. System was out of pressure by then and no spraying fuel.

I'm more worried about the fuel pump. Any problems with that?

fuel pump is quite easy, you just have to be careful as it is a complicated apparatus and don't want to bend anything. Changing the actual pump in the bracket took about 2 minutes.

To depressurize the system before installing my 255 pump, I unhooked the power from the fuel pump while the car was running via the white harness.

in fact, I never had to depressurize the system when I installed fuel pump... never had any problem of fuel spraying all over the place. Maybe tiny 100mL of fuel spilled over...

this took away much of my fear of doing a swap. The injector swap looks to be more of a pain.

Yeah, it is not as difficult as you might think. All you need is right tools and patience. Just take time and watch out for any leaks post install.

Took me a little over 3 hours on the injectors fun stuff just have to remember the car doesnt start next time if theres any lost bolts in the engine bay.

One more thing that makes the turbo super easy to install is replacing the oil line hose clip down below the uppipe. I could never get that thing to stop sliding back down the oil line every time i push the turbo in place. Major PITA
