Default STi hood scoop on 02-03 WRX --- HP gain?

Does it really help to force more air into the I/C or it's just for the that aggressive look? Will existing air splitter from WRX work fine with STi hood scoop or it needs to be modified for perfect fitment and performance?

It's more for the look if you have a stock IC, though it will allow more air in just based of the physics of its greater size. However, to get the most out of the air flow and to not have a low splitter in a high scoop you'll need to get a new splitter that fits it.

It's mainly more for looks. You would need to get a larger intercooler like the STI one, but but it really isn't worth it. Besides I see that you have cobb stage2 and getting one of those isnt in the upgrade path of any of the off the shelf maps unless you plan on getting your car protuned.

Always remember, If you do one thing to your car power wise, you have to do other things for it to work right. Ex. Gigantic aftermarket turbo + stock intercooler = little gains. Big scoop +stock intercooler + stock diffuser = no difference. Now big scoop + sti diffuser + bigger intercooler = a big gain in the butt dyno. Enjoy.

problem is tho, the sti splitter is too big for the stock ic, so if you get the sti splitter it will devert some air around the ic and make it kinda pointless.

its more really for looks, but it helps out when you have a bigger tmic

i had a friend measure the IC temperature before and after going from WRX to STI Hood scoop and noticed a pretty dramatic temperature difference. So it definately cools the IC more than the wrx scoop.

Can you give us specific numbers on that? Keeping the IC cooler would definitely be advantageous.

I don't know the numbers he did this on his 2004 wrx

He said it was cool enough to put his hand on it after.

It was about 30-40 degrees or so if i remember correctly.

I just installed the Seibon CF 04-05' style scoop on my 03' and noticed a HUGE difference. I am runnin' a Hyperflow TMIC so it really needed the additional air flow. Don't know about the o3' style sti scoop though.

When I used to check the TMIC right after beatin' on it I noticed it was quite hot. After the new scoop it is just barely above ambient temp.

I have a temp gun, but never checked the old setup. It is by far worth it if you have a large TMIC and the Hyperflow is flat out GIANT!

02/03 stock wrx hood scoops have a low air flow problem. it doesnt allow enough air to cool the IC adequately at speed of 80+ mph so it is a good idea if you ever take trips where you could see 80+ for a good amount of time.
