That is closed deck, but it's not a WRX/STI RA.

It's from an early Legacy. Still an EJ20G, but an earlier head design. The interesting thing about that particualr one is that it doesn't have the Legacy cam and crank sensors. They have been changed to WRX ones.

so the different sensors are that more notably different?
what's the difference between the early legacy ej20g and the wrx ej20g?

The Legacy sensors have long leads that go to the bellhousing area. The WRX sensors, as show in the pic, plug in to the engine harness at the sensor.

The engines have about the same capabilities. The Legacy uses a stub rocker valve arraingement that is prone to ticking. The WRX uses a cam-over-bucket design. The Legacy has larger head chambers (and smaller piston chambers) than the WRX. The Legacy has no direct USDM eqivalent, while you can use '96 Outback/GT parts for the WRX head.

so where did you get this engine .. it my old engine
the the yellow/green stuff on the bell housing is sidewalk paint (like sidewalk chalk but paint)

as above its a 92-93? legacy-gt auto came with a vf-10 had even compression ~165 on all cyls when i took it out in 2006

and yes the hla will get noisy if it sits .. but will quiet down after ~15 min

and those are ej18 cam and crank sensors
