Default Advice sought on Extended Warranty

Hello everyone!

I am new to NASIOC, and Subaru in general, so have mercy (or pity, whichever you prefer).

I ran a search for extended warranties, but could not find a clear-cut answer on if Subaru's extended warranties are worth the money. I am a fan of doing some work on my own, but "big ticket" items are a bit out of my league, thus my interest in an extended warranty. I have done some looking, and I think I want to go with the Gold warranty for 5 years/100k miles. The best price I found was $1500 with a 10% discount.

So my question is two-fold... Is the warranty worth it? and are there any dealers that are more willing to work on price than others?

Thanks in advance!

i got the waranty just incase. It cost me $900 canadian which is like 700 usd. For 5 yeasr 120000 km. I think you could get it for cheaper, the dealership gave me the warranty at dealer cost, or close to it. The cool thing is that if your keep the car for a longtime it will pay off and if you sell it , it's an incentive to the buyer. With all the sensors in our cars I think the warranty is worth it.

Depends, do you plan on modding your Suby? If so, probably not worth it.

I would never get an extended warranty. Odds are you will not need it. That is why it is profitable. There is also various reasons to deny the warranty if you do need it.

It's a gamble.

True, but it's just like having car insurance....you may never need it, but you'll be glad if you have it (forgetting the fact it's required by law)
I have seen several instances where they pay for themselves and exceed what the customer paid.

Usually, people that buy extended warranties are the ones that either exceed time or mileage first. Some people extend it because they drive alot of miles and the mileage will expire before the time. Others get it because they hardly ever drive and will exceed the time first. The rest buy it because they plan on keeping the vehicle for a long time

Ditto on what rexygirl says. If you're planning on keeping the car beyond 5 years or 60K miles, then it might not be a bad idea to get the warranty up front. You can buy an SAS policy at any point until you reach 3 years or 36K miles on your car. If you can't afford it now or haven't decided how long you plan to keep your car, then hold off on buying the warranty and save some money towards it. Then just buy the warranty before you hit the deadline.

If you don't buy one... you may wish you did. You could buy one, and never use it. Its hard to say at this point but if you plan to mod the car then do not buy one. If your going to drive the car and want to get the most out of it without having to worry about paying for repairs after the factory warranty expires... then buy it. I deal with incidents every day were people wished they had gotten the warranty, and people who are glad they did.

I have been driving ~160 miles daily to and from work for the last 3 months, so I am over 32k miles on an 05 model. I fully intend to make this car last (which is why come the new year I will be taking public transportation), so I know I want to get a warranty.

Having only had one previous car that was well beyond warranted years, I learned the hard way that repairs can be costly, and a real PITA to do on your own. I am figuring on going with the 5/100 as opposed to the 7/100 because I expect that I might not own this car after another 5 years. By then I will be in a different point in my life, and the lack of rear passenger room might be a bigger problem than it is now.

In dealing with SOA warranties specifically, is there any recommendation of the "Gold" over the "Classic" coverage, or am I just paying more for the word Gold?

You need to hurry and buy it before your 3/36 expires, otherwise you will pay more and get less coverage.

There are alot of differences between the Gold an Classic coverages. You can see what they exactly cover by going to subaru.com and looking under "Owners."

I purchased an aftermarket warranty thru my Suby dealership for about the same price as the OP. I've already used it for ~$700 worth of work and still have another three years on it. Plus I can take it to any mechanic-not just the dealership-which is a huge benefit of an aftermarket warranty.

My cousin sold extended warranties for 4 different manufactures. I sent he the details on the Subaru one, and she said it was too little coverage for the money. I am on my second car without one.

warranties can be haggled much more then a car purchase. Reason being, is that the margin on a warranty is much higher then the car.

I got my gold Warranty for roughly $1180 or so. They wouldn't budge on the car price, but were willing to knock a few hundred off the warranty.

I'd say, just haggle at the time of purchase, and if they wont knock more then 10% off the warranty, just walk away, and make them come to you

Wow thats different. I have word for Ford, Toyota and now Subaru and dealing with over a dozen or more companies the SAS Gold is the best one I have seen yet. It is pretty much a factory warranty(minus the adjustments and bulbs).

I had a customer get her headgasket covered under it and saved her $1600

SAS Gold is awesome from all my experience dealing with them.

I know what it says it covers, but I have never dealt with anything Suby before (bought my car used) so I didn't know how well they followed through on things. Goodness knows they aren't happy when I keep taking it in b/c the brakes continue to squeel and the foglight bulbs keep burning out. I am sure as heck not going to pay or do it myself since both are supposed to be covered by warranty, but they never do anything about it at the dealership. I guess I don't bitch loud enough.

Thanks for the input. I am not going to be driving a lot in the new year, so I will have more time to save for the warranty.

Also, does SOA offer reasonable financing for the warranties, since I can't lump it in with my car payment?

The Subaru brand warranties are pretty fair IMHO (e.g. without tricky wording in the fine print), and are close to half dealer markup, so you should be able to get 25-30% off list price without major haggling. You can buy one from any authorized Subaru dealer in the USA, so you should contact other dealers if your current one isn't willing to deal. Also note that the time/mileage numbers are from the car's in-service date, so a 5yr/100k mile Gold Plus will extend the 3/36 b-to-b warranty by 2 years/64k miles (and powertrain by only 40k miles over the 5 year powertrain warranty).

The turbo makes it a lot less miles. (I go about 1000 miles a week, so extended time is not an issue) When she looked at what I got for how much she said no...

I am replying to this, your orginial post. I bought an extended warranty when we purchased my wife's 03 Forester XS. It cost use $1200, and it is close to being a zero-balance, for out-of-warranty issues. We have been out of the factory warranty period for only 4 months. But when stuff happens, it happens. But we still have another 2 years on it.

This was taken care at a Suby dealer. No hoops to jump thru, very straight forward and painless.

THE ONLY THING I WOULD LIKE TO MENTION, IF YOU ARE PLANNING ON AFTERMARKET PERFORMANCE PARTS, IT'S NOT WORTH PURCHASING THE EX WARRANTY. THEY WILL FIND A WAY TO DENY YOUR CLAIM.

That is why, me, personally, will never purchase one. I will break that bitch in the first month (I mean the warranty, not the car). SO it's not worth me purchasing a extended warranty on any vehicle I will drive personally.
